You only have to listen to the very end to see the respect from the audience. No anticipatory Whooping or clapping, just attentive awe, then eventually the heartfelt applause. Epic.

Hey Mark, if you happen to be sitting at the computer some day or evening and looking down at the comments. . . . Back in the day I had a paper route. First thing I did with the money was open a bank account. Mother made me. Second thing I did was buy a Dire Straits album. Played it til the tape fell out of the cassette. Now here I am an older dude, still listening. And I've got my own Juliet. A decade later and she still haunts my dreams. This is one of those songs where I stop playing along on my guitar and just listen. Take care, man. Great work, as always.

Not only is Mark the greatest guitarist of all times he is a poet as well. When you listen to the words carefully you can learn and realize further meaningful lyrics. His reference to There’s a place for us , just like the movie song, is reference to West Side Story. Almost all of his songs include reference to the past. Songs like Brothers in Arms, Sailing to Philadelphia, All the Road Running, If This is The End, and on and on have profound meaning. He is the greatest of my lifetime.

This is such a beautiful song , what it was written about and played for I suppose is JUST PART OF THE WALK OF LIFE , so yes life and the walk with many bring you pain and some may just use you for what they need to till they are done in getting what they need , do not want to judge another or who caused who harm , it is just such an amazing and beautiful song till you find out what the lyrics are truly about . Your music is just awesome , you a humble person and you made it through all that pain and yes it was not the right time of Your Walk Of Life for that relationship as painful as it was , I salute you for your music and always writing and playing about something and not nothing , Great guitarist , great solo player and one of the best bands ever , Dire Straits

In the section between 3:20 and 3:45, the song slows to a softer beat, and Mark’s demeanor seems to suddenly become more somber. His voice takes on a huskier tone; his eyes grow softer and more contemplative; and the moment when head slightly tilted, his mouth strains with nearly uncontrolled emotion. This is what I love most about Mark Knopfler. He doesn’t just mouth words, he lives them. There are only a number of musicians I regret not having had the chance to go see perform live. Mark is on the top of that list.

I'd read that he wrote the song about his girlfriend of the time who heartlessly dumped him and hurt his heart... but when he's singing the song these many years later he seems to be feeling the lyrics emotionally, getting teary-eyed. My take on that is not that he's remembering the girl from almost 20 years before, but likely that he was going through a painful divorce at the time.

@@katiezee2 The girlfriend at the time was Holly Vincent. He does get very emotional when he sings this song, and I agree it can't be about the break-up from 20 years ago. So you make a good point that he might have been going through a painful divorce with his ex-wife, Lourdes. Does anyone know why they got divorced? I remember reading at the time they supposedly had a solid marriage so people were surprised about the divorce. I am happy for Mark that he certainly seems to have a happy marriage with Kitty. Mark Knofler is the reason I picked up a guitar 33 years ago. I just wanted to be able to play like him, and I think I achieved a great deal of it, well I hope I did at least. I copied his songs and his fingerstyle and played in my room after school every day for hours or until my ma told me to shut up. I'm 47 now and my daughter has picked up the guitar and she's brilliant, much better than I was at her age. Music is a magic and for me, it was a way to escape my reality and be like the greats, even if I wasn't one. I'm so happy that I passed that talent on, like my dad did and I hope my daughter does the same one day. Learn to play and bring music into your future and your family. It's the last true magic left.

As Mark plays it's clear that everyone in the room is thinking about past lovers, "and the way they used to be." What a great song, our shared experience.

This song is so perfect musically you just become mesmerized by it. The piano and the guitar intertwined with all the band. The singing - kind of talking - style of Mr. M. Knopfler. The lyrics. The orchestration. It's amazing.

I was enrolled in a Massachusetts college from 79 to 83 and fell in love and got my heart broken over and over again. After one of the more devastating separations I would play this song on my turntable over and over again lamenting on how much of an idiot I was to lose her. This song pulled me apart, but sometimes you need someone to be lonely with and a song fills the void. This one in particular brings me back to that off campus house and my roommates yelling in vain " will you shut that melancholy crap off for crying out loud, and snap out of it" I've loved this song for so long.
