It’s a shame Mariusz doesn’t get the recognition he deserves, even amongst some strongman fans, as one of the GOAT’s, as you can tell he loved the sport as much as anyone. Always confused me as to why

He got overshadowed by Z. The problem was that Pudz was winning WSM with Z hot on his heels, but when they did IFSA/Arnold and Z was winning Pudz would get left wayyyy behind. It tainted his reputation that he was losing so handily in other contests.

Newer fans to the sport not looking at past results outside of wsm. WSM not having all the top athletes for several years. WSM being a bit ‘lighter’ at the time. But all that said, Pudz is definitely one of the greats.

when it's said that Marius doesn't necessarily get the credit he deserves, that's only from the current perspective where people talk about Brian Shaw and big Z. Back in the 2000s, for the average fan, Marius WAS strongman. He was the biggest name and who everybody talked about.

What was so impressive about Mariusz was the way he weighed less than any of the men he competed against, and was one of the shortest at around 6'1. Yet was the World strongest man, while being built like a damn MR Olympia/bodybuilder, had one of the biggest, and most defined 6 packs... He was Agile, athletic, had speed... he would literally run with weight, youre not suppose to walk with, and this dude was RUNNING! It was jaw dropping, and what this dude did. Whats crazy is he has the most wins ever with 5.... but if it weren't for him going to prison in 2001, and tearing his calf during competition in 2006, he would of had 7 WSM wins. He's the damn Ronnie Coleman of the WSM world. On top of all of that, he didnt just win those 5, he DOMINATED! He literally would win almost every damn event. One or two of the years he won the title in the 2nd to last event.... they still had the final event, and he already had the title.... that is pure diomination.

In recently re-watching every WSM since they began heats (1994), two things that stood out were how incredibly well Mariusz did in 2009 and how the level of competition he had during the IFSA split was probably a little better than people remember. I know there were a lot of up-and-comers that didn't really pose a threat, so to speak, but there were some really solid ones as well (Pfister, Mitt, Wenta, Dymek, Hollands, etc...) who probably would've done well in any group, split or no split.

People here write a lot of hate towards Mariusz. They write that he is overrated, that he doesn't deserve any good words, that he was weak. What the heck, people? Let me tell you my point of view (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Mariusz was the only strongman who could win WSM, look like a bodybuilder and perform a semi-advanced taekwondo kick at the same time. He could deadlift 400kg which barely anyone could do at his time and 400kg is still considered a huge weight nowadays. He could beat 20kg heavier competitors in static events when it wasn't 1 rep max. He could pull a truck with an achilles tendon injury and win this event... Can you imagine doing 400kg deadlift being 130-140kg? Can you imagine having an achilles injured and go do your 100% in a truck pull to win (or a train, don't remember which one it was)? Can you go back to 2000', beat 10cm taller, 20kg heavier guys in moving heavy weights and do it 40 times in a period of 9 years? Well, he could, and that's why he's a legend of this sport. He was also a wise sportsman, he didn't push it to 100% if he knew that he could save his body a bit. When he needed 5 reps, he stopped at 5, even if he could do 10. If he needed points you could see wild determination in his eyes. He could get into the zone and use his body to its absolute limit. He always competed to win, he always fought to the last event. I think 2002-2007 WSM are the most fun to watch, just to see his obsession. Savickas is the GOAT, but Mariusz is the legend of the sport.

Mariusz is like 16-8 lifetime vs Zydrunas. All we have to go by, is the times they directly competed against each other. The format of the Arnold vs WSM from 2003-2009 was WAY too different for any single athlete to win both in one year. As a matter of fact NO ONE won both an Arnold and a WSM in the same year between 2003-2009. Zydrunas did not compete in the Arnold in 2009 and instead focused to win the 2009 WSM. Around 2010 the formats of both contests became much more similar, however it would not be until 2014 that Zydrunas could win both in the same year. Likewise, Mariusz could not win both despite competing in both. I'd like to also bring up the point that Mariusz competed at the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2006 despite the split between the IFSA and WSM. So, cross competition WAS possible. Mariusz was not avoiding Zydrunas. He did not turn down an opportunity to compete and showed Zydrunas respect by stepping into his house in 2003, 2004 and 2006. Zydrunas and Mariusz were friends and often times could be seen with their arms over each other's shoulders in comradery. I do not know the exact reason why Zydrunas did not come to WSM from 2005-2008 but I am sure there was a good reason. Injury, over training, pressure from IFSA, who knows?

I feel in the 00´s strongman was getting back on his feet and finding it´s motion on strenght sports again, it was trying new stuff and that gave Mariusz an edge, Mariusz was a beast and contrary to popular belive he had a ton of static strenght, but when Strongman came back to lift heavier stuff the shift to Zydrunas was unbelivable, also the competition he face is crazy.

if I remember correctly Marius was also playing rugby as a hobby during his strongman career. that's why his endurance was at another level to other strongmans

Wonderful content yet again 👏 Marius was never the strongest man in the world he just happened to be a bit faster in the lighter events. Strongest man on the planet is an awesome title, so let's make sure it goes that way in future because people like yourself Loz are an inspiration to us mere mortals. Lots of love to you both and keep up the fantastic content ❤

That was alot of fun, i think in terms of static strength its obvious who wins and in terms of speed or racing events its obvious who wins, but the est all rounder, id be picking Mariusz everytime, but Zydrunas will be remembered for a longer time i think because of the specific feats he did, like being the first to press a 500lb log overhead for example. Mariusz doesnt really have that, he was good at everything and thus won but i cant recall him ever having a forte for a direct strength event.

Very educational. It’s always implied that mariuz had a free reign with all the big guys not competing against him because of the split. This shows really he was on par with the very best.

Mariusz and Zydrunas are both amazing athletes(both still active but Mariusz in MMA where he is still devoted). I think Big Z is well known as he has provided entertainment for several generations and being at top most of the time. Mariusz has done one more thing here in Poland. He has popularized strongman sport in Poland. His international succes broth atantion of sponsors and TV. I remember watching strongman competitions in TV every Sunday as a kid. They've even came to my home town for some events where you could feel it. After his era we've had only Krzysztof Radzikowski on top level. And now Mateusz feeling the gap after some years past. And I can imagine that with out Mariusz there would be no Mateusz, but I might be wrong on that. You are now doing great job with bringing viewers closer to the old(for some 2000 is old :D ) Let's make strongman great again ;) this is such a wonderful sport!

Pudzianowski was better in a few static events sometimes, especially if they were for reps. For example he has a winning record against Z in deadlift (reps and hold). Overall Mariusz came out on top of Žydrūnas in 24 different events, 10 more than the other way around.

It is hard to compare. When the 'made for television' programme, WSM, started out as a carney side show. Its not like its Powerlifting or Olympic weight lifting where events remained the same. Todays competitors are lifting far more than they did in the 80s. Back when this started you had guys bending rebar over their heads. Kind of hard to say the winner back then who won based on their arm wrestling event compares to todays winners. The WSM org needs to reset and create standardized events. Which do not change from year to year. But we already have Powerlifting and OLY. So guess they should keep it as a side show and maybe even exaggerate that aspect moreso. But Mario was the best in his era and events of the time as Big Z was in his.

Why did WSM give out good trophies to all 3 podium athletes in some earlier years like 2003/2004 for example, when in ~2010-2013ish only the winner got a trophy and 2nd and 3rd place got a tiny little glass plaque thing? Seems like they went backwards for a few years in terms of awards, yet it was sponsored by Met-Rx that whole time period if I’m not mistaken. Can anyone enlighten me?

If you're talking about pure strength Zydrunas is the GOAT. If you're talking about agility, Mariusz is the GOAT. Seriously both were great. Too bad strongman doesn't have the level of funding football has. These guys deserve so much more. Most athletes competing in these have fulltime jobs so can't dedicate themselves the way current stars can. Big Z vs Mariusz is like comparing Jordan v Kobe or Lebron. All are GOATS.

  • @tylerdavis9077
    @tylerdavis90772 жыл бұрын

Long post alert: I became a fan of strongman watching mariusz. He was such a great competitor and was a dominant force in his era. The reason I still give the nod to big Z as the goat, even though he lost the head to head, is because he was so good over many different era’s in strongman. In almost every sport their are certain athletes that may be dominate in one era but less so in another. Strongman is no different. There are times we see more of an emphasis on moving events that favor fast agile guys (like mariusz) and other times there is an emphasis on static events that favor statically strong guys (like Eddie Hall). To see Z be at the top or near the top through these different era’s just shows how well rounded he is. That’s what strongman is all about displaying your strength though many different types of events and conditions. Not to say mariusz could not have been just as dominant through different eras, but we can’t know because his career was shorter. So I give Z the GOAT title (Greatest of all time) and Mariusztge GOTE title (Greatest of the era).
