Her pure unbelievable, unparelleled talent aside, can we also say how purely elegant Mariah is… her stature, her carriage, her classic black and white clothing, everything about the Tokyo Dome performance is pure class, restraint, just a focus on her vocals. It’s such a contrast to today, all the bells and whistles, bling, skimpy outfits, shenanigans, and Mariah still blows them all away. To me, this is what pure beauty and talent are… she’s so inspiring, can’t help but cry and be so moved at what emotions she stirs inside me!

There’s something about her voice that accentuates the lyrics and it makes it seem like she wrote it. The same thing happens with Dont Play that Song and The Beautiful Ones. Don’t get me wrong, Aretha and Prince are also GOATs but Mariah’s version of their songs is more than a cover: like a re-expansion of the actual heart they were initially written with.

She was really delivering LIVE performances with this God-sent, heavenly, golden voice without needing as much as an ear piece. None of today's singers will ever be able to relate. She CAN still sing rings around any of them. An unmatched talent.

Most people think the original is the 1971 version by Harry Nilsson, because that's the version that was widely known and it's the version she covered, but the original was recorded a year prior to the Harry Nilsson version, by a British Powerpop band called Badfinger. There is a lot of tragedy behind this song, regarding the two writers: Pete Ham and Tom Evans. Badfinger struggled with a host of legal, managerial and financial issues, leading to Ham taking his own life in 1975. Over the next years, the surviving members struggled to rebuild their personal and professional lives against a backdrop of lawsuits, which tied up the songwriters' royalty payments for years. On the night of 18 November 1983, Tom Evans and bandmember Joey Molland had an extensive and heated argument on the phone regarding past Badfinger income still in escrow from their previous record deal and the "Without You" songwriting royalties Tom Evans was now finally receiving, which Molland, former manager Collins and bandmember Mike Gibbins all wanted a share of. Following this argument, Evans hanged himself in the garden at his home in New Haw, Surrey, on the morning of 19 November 1983.
