Managing Hormonal Behaviour in Your Bird

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I gotta say the part about the birds and the bees talk was my best work yet
Hormonal changes like puberty, hormonal season like nesting season can be tough on both them and us. There is more aggressive behaviour displayed and it can lead to some issues if you arnt aware. Lots of birds get rehomed in those times because people didn't know. Its temporary! There are times where you are the cause of their hormonal behaviour because you are unknowingly stimulating them. So here are ways to calm them down and help manage these behavioural changes

Your videos are SO informative, about to get my first conure after not having a bird for tons of years and I had no idea how much things had changed- how much more important info there is to care for them properly than just seed and a cage as people wrongly think.

My female Jenday, Chico, was getting hormonal last year and began feather picking. She was acting extremely "wound-up" and was hopping around inside her cage and shaking like she had been covered in itching powder. I gave her more showers and sometimes just spritzed her with a water bottle. This would calm her for a little while. I took her to the vet, ran blood work, and everything came back OK. My vet said she was hormonal (this was early April) and gave me a few things to try. My vet said I needed to stress Chico - just slightly. He advised that I move her cage to a different location, so each night I began moving her cage into my spare bedroom away for my other birds. She would call to her flock for 10-15 minutes, but then calmed-down for the night. I would move her back to the flock in the morning. If she started acting wound-up during the day, I would move her cage back to the spare bedroom. Chico was also gorging herself on food, especially in the afternoon. I would weigh her each day and her weight increased by 6-8 grams over her normal weight. My vet said to remove her food bowl, or limit her food --- the thought being that birds become hormonal in the spring when food becomes abundant, which triggers the mating instinct. Each afternoon, about an hour before bedtime I would remove Chico's food for the evening. It took 4-6 weeks for her to finally return to normal. All her plucked feathers grew back and she returned to her normal weight and personality. That was 18 months ago. If she begins to act hormonal, I use these tips and the phase usually passes with a few days.

@mimisbirdhouse Thank you for the awesome videos. I've commented that I came close to getting a bird because I thought they were easy. I wouldn't be able to give a bird what is needed. Any pet is a huge commitment. But I'm a dog guy and I love the pit I rescued. She 10. The last pit I rescued was 12 and she was deaf. Think I'll just keep giving the older dogs a home. Rescue dogs are the most loving. And the older they are the more loving they are!! If anyone is able to give them what they need like you see on her videos rescue a bird and follow what you see here on these videos, and if not and want a loving pet rescue an older dog. You won't regret it. Hope it was OK I said this.

I notice that recently my parrots start throwing up with each other and sometime with my hand (just few time) i don't pet them other than their head. Why's that?🤔 They bite me, basically only Peach bite😓, but i can understand that since they are molting. I let them sleep 12 or more hours, i put them to sleep at 7 p.m. and then wake them up at 8 p.m. if they don't wake up on their own, but they basically wake up after 7.😅 Did not get notification of my previous cmnt about watching my recent video since it has a peek of my babies🤔, if so it's okay. 🤗

Doing all that makes it worse but in their hormone season they will just be hormonal in general which is why its recommended to follow the second half which is things to help calm them down ☺️ Also sorry the last part of your comment I didnt understand what you meant?

Hi, I have a pineapple conure, and she is a well-behaved until it comes to going to bed she hates her cage even though it has lots of toys and is a perfect size for her and she is out all day until bedtime I also dont feel safe with her out of her cage when im sleeping she learned all of my tricks into I getting in cage I guess I'm just asking for some tips and tricks if you have time for it Thank you :)

Sounds like a conure 😅 with my conure i start to shut off lights and close window blinds. Not its pitch dark or anything but its low lit where I can see at least. Ill pick up my conure in my hands, tell her goodnight, put her in and then cover her sleeping space and make everything completely dark. You can try this out, they dont fly in the dark, in case they do be ready to flip the light switch on quickly so they dont hurt themselves

No I wouldnt that would cause a lot of stress. Instead take away any area they are using to nest and lay eggs. Let me know if that doesnt work and we can walk through other options

Have you tried fake eggs? You exchange the fake ones for the real ones while your bird is not looking and she shouldn't realise. Then, when she loses interest, you remove them
