When Squirt becomes hormonal, or naughty with her toys , I tell her to stop being weird and I redirect her into playing with tissue paper, her favorite destructo-bird toys. And I only give her scritches on her head. I'm going to definitely use your suggestions. Thank you david!!!!

Sounds like a good tactic! Olive likes paper too, so we do something similar!

My little green cheek is turning 8 months old and I think she is beginning to go through a hormonal phase. She’s been strutting back and forth, swaying in circles, making little trilling noises and has been more food aggressive lately. I only pet her on the head but I have been keeping petting to a minimum lately. Chamomile is a good idea, I’ll start putting it in her food. I have a hormonal cockatiel too so I have two hormonal birds in the house 😅

What are the cockatiel hormonal behaviors?

My little conure is in his 3rd year, it’s about to hit spring and he’s SUPER hormonal, I’m really glad to hear that it’s normal for the hormones to kick up at this time, I’ve been worrying since nothing else has changed but the season.

Hormones are a normal parrot of parrot biology, especially related to season. However it is worth managing them at times and not promoting them!

Very imp info, thanks for the video. One of my female budgie got hormonal. Separated her from others, suddenly she started to bite everyone. Gave her lots of toys to distract from biting. Normally they sleep for 12hrs. I did everything but still she got hormonal, surprisingly she is only 3month old 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

My friend has a conure but his big problem is he is always getting naughty with her! She tries to just put him in the cage whenever he does it to try to stop him but normally he ends up biting her. She only pets his head and everything however she still doesn’t know what to do. She can barely give him freeroam time to be with her. She is always good about the sleep and only touching his head but still.

Hey Raychel, Sadly her first step isn't the best one. If you pop parrots back in their cage every time they do something you don't want it only ends up teaching them two things: That if they want to go back they just need to do that thing That they get an instant reaction and end up stuck in the cage. It's really good that she keeps petting around the head though, very useful. It could be good for her to look at sleep, diet, cage set up, environment and lots of other factors. Sadly beyond this kind of advice it'd take a full consultation to work out the exact causes and come up with a plan of action.

Thank you for the tip on number of hours for sleep. Rory has been a raging pain in the butt all day today with screaming. I know it's my fault because last week their diet has been pretty treat heavy. That was me just trying to appease them. I am definitely going to get myself some chamomile, most of the links you both use won't work for me since I am in the US, but I think I have a solid company to buy from.

Hey Lin, The treat thing is really easy to do! Us parrot lovers do it to be kind, to keep them quiet sometimes, to give big training rewards, to make them happy etc! No worries, provided you can get it from a reliable source it's all good!

Hi, how many flowers are they allowed per day? I’m just trying out the chamomile with our cockatiel. Also, how many flowers to water to make a tea? Can I just put that in her water bottle daily through hormonal times? Not sure how often to use. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Joy, For stuff like chamomile you can provide it daily. We usually use a tea spoon of dried in chop! With regards to putting it in her drinking water, I'd probably avoid it unless you plan to just do it for a set period of an hour or so. It's always best to have clean water available and provide it in food or in a cooled tea! I have a video dedicated to flowers on my channel that might be worth peeking at!

Hey there, It's not known to no, especially from others I've spoken to who have done it. BUT I can imagine for some parrots the extra touching and pressure when putting the harness on/off and during the training could potentially contribute to it.

When I was living in the studio, unfortunately I didn't have a choice about covering the cage. Now I can just settle them down then leave the room. Chamomile is truly magical! Sparky was really nervous when I first got him. Introducing that to his diet and having tea available on their outside perch really has made a difference. I'm not sure if it was hormonal behaviour that had them acting up over the last week and a half or the fact that my neighbours have been drilling all day while I've been at work but things have calmed down now. It's nice to get back to normal and have them out for a while when I get home.

For some situations it is tough to avoid! It's one of those awesome extras that can be added regularly to a parrot's diet. So glad we discovered it a while back too! Also it's something we can share with out parrots! The drilling may have been stressing them! I know ours get really annoyed if there's lots of row! I'm glad they have settled down though!

Do they eat the chamomile flowers or do you prepare tea and they drink it?

Thank you for this information. I didn’t realize his behavior was hormonal but he was becoming very aggressive. His food is fine and he gets 12 hours of darkness as best I can with blackout curtains. I do only touch him on his neck but he comes and puts his beak up to my lips for kisses. Should I be avoiding that?

The lip kissing may be best avoided if he’s likely to bite! I have an updated hormone series that may help a little more!

My cocatiel went nuts after i changed his cage to diffrent side of the room he was divebombing, biting me and was really agressive even tough normally we just hanged ou and played and he seemed happy.I changed his cage back and he was fine for like 2 days now hes agrressive again even tough i have changed his diet, 12 hours of sleep and pet him(like always)only on head this has been like this for a month

Hey Alisa, It's possible the change triggered something off in him, or it's just coincidental. If his diet is healthy, you pet him correctly and he's getting plenty of sleep it may be something else that is triggering off his hormones. If you can, provide dried chamomile over his chop and try some avian teas to see if that helps. Also look at the portion sizes of the food and if there's anything you provide with high sugar or fat (for example pellets, nutriberries, excess fruit etc) Sadly there's so many things that could be causing the problem that I can't cover it all in a comment reply.

I am unable to not cover my cage since i have no curtains so it’ll still be bright in my room. I have no other place in the house to put my cage either because there will still be noise from my family is it okay if i still risk the covering?

There’s a few ways you can work on this! Either partially cover the cage, eliminate other homrmonal triggers so covering is the only one or get a black out blind! (I have an updated series on hormones I put out more recently worth watching)

Hey M, He's a very small little guy! Conures generally like to bite, the babies love to taste and nibble on everything as they are learning about the world. I have a few videos on conure biting that may help. But generally at this point I'd probably wait until he's a bit older before trying to train and curtail it.

Do female green cheeks have monthly cycles? It seems like ours does.

Hey Christine, They do not no! Their reproductive mechanics are somewhat different! However they do have a seasonal cycle influenced by light and sometimes other environmental factors.

Hey Jennifer, That is totally possible. You see it often in cockatiel's who are native to Auz. Their instincts tell them it's hormone season so they get hormonal (including other environmental triggers etc) Sometimes though the seasonal changes can cause hormones in our spring/summer too! So if the hormones aren't managed you can get two whacks of it! Sun conures can be similar as their native habitat is South America!

Hormones are the worst! We can’t fully get rid of them but we can minimise them!

I’m having issues with one of my green cheeks I rescued he don’t sleep and it’s very aggressive towards my sun conures but with the other green cheeks he gets along what should I do for he can sleep he knows how to escape a cage so he wants to be out but can’t sleep because he starts to get violent when I get home he already has a cut in his nose and it worries me because all this makes me feel he isn’t comfortable he is soo much afraid

Hey Natalie, Firstly this does sound like a major hormone issue. It could also be due to his past experiences, fear as you mentioned and perhaps the environment. If he's getting on with the green cheeks it's likely that he see's the sun conures as a potential threat or not part of his flock. I'd look at hormone management techniques, observing him closely to see if he has any aggression triggers and working on training with him. It can take a while for a parrot to adapt so I'd keep at it. Sadly beyond the above advice/videos you'd need a consultation so we could go into the detail of what could be the problem. There just isn't enough room in a comment reply!

How do you make them sleep a lot?

You can encourage relaxation through a loose routine, ensuring the room is dark and using techniques such as conditioned calm. But it's difficult to "make them" do it!

I have got a new cockatiel about 1-2 months ago. And that's when I started seeing my conure be hormonal was the last 2 weeks. Should I arrange the room to where he can't see the cockatiels or just leave it and let him settle on his own.

@@TheParrotTeacher I'm not 100% sure if the cause tho. I just got him a new cage today. A bigger cage but whenever I let him and my cockatiel out whether it's in their room or mine. He regurgitates. For a few days I was letting him under blankets and into my hoodies cause I didn't know it wasn't good but I stopped letting him do that. He is in a pellet diet and eats fresh veggies (mainly peppers😭) every day.

I have a one year old female cockatiel and made the decision to get a second cockatiel about a month ago. Our lives have gotten busier recently and I want her to have a companion when we are not at home. Unfortunately Cockatiels are in high demand where I live and knowing the sex of the bird at time of purchase is not possible. I found out today that our new little bird is a male. We were hoping for a girl to make life easier but that did not happened. We have a playroom where our girl cockatiel is free to roam all day and go in and out of her cage as she likes. We will have a second cage for the new bird. Once he is out of quarantine I am hoping that they will get along and share the playroom together and then have their cages at night for sleeping. Are they destined to mate? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey Carla, They certainly aren't destined to mate! They may get on great and just be friends, dislike each other or potentially get naughty! The best way to prevent it is manage their hormones, ensure there are no nesting sites in the room and as you are doing cage them separately.

My african grey is 26 and it seems like I am his hormonal trigger.. when he sees me he starts. No interaction is required.. any advice? I have not been able to handle him it gets worse.. I miss my parrot.

Hey there, It's possible you contribute to being a trigger because your grey is closely bonded to you and sees you as a mate, but there are usually other things going on that contribute. It's worth looking at his sleep, his diet, how he interacts with you, what training he gets and his environment. You could also consider in cage training to get started if you don't already as well as adding some bits into his diet that help with hormones (flowers etc) I have other videos that explore these topics. Mine begs for meat. I noticed when I cut out his meat, the hormones naturally decrease

They don’t eat meat in the wild apart from insects! It’s something we’ve looked into in depth both on our own and as part of formal studies!

It’s possible they just have a positive link to it or see you eating it and want it too! Often our animals will gravitate to what we have! Even if it isn’t ideal for them!

I planted chamomile this year, but seems none of my herbs grew at all. Bit sad, cause I had planted 14 or so different herb seeds. I think the seeds I had were to old, but I wanted to give them a try. My pea seeds grew fine, and they were just as old though. Next year I wont bury them as deep, and use brand new seeds.

Hey there, Honestly, if he has unusual droppings and his vents are dirty and yellow it really sounds like a vet issue rather than something I can help with I'm afraid! I can only really provide first aid advice, anything else health wise is vet territory!

Edit: yos this is super helpful for ppl with hormonal birds Lucky me bc I don't have seasons and my birbs have no interest in it bc I distract them with toys (shredding toys no bad toys lol) My birds eat chop for breakfast and healthy seeds for dinner (except for tiki since he needs handfeeding) Fluffy loves scritches (only in head an neck) tiki is ok with it, Maya hates it lol I don't have any of those flowers :( When they go out with me they nap on me hahaha I partial cover Tiki and Fluffy halfway but with Maya she hates it so I don't cover her My chop is just in the fridge but not in the freezer lol. And I also have to feed Tiki mushy foods bc I am trying to wean him Shredding toys ruuuuuuuule (Maya fluffy and tiki declare this)

Sounds like you're doing a good job then! Toy distraction/a good diet helps so much!

I did all of these on purpose, to try and get my budgies to breed. It didn't work :( Minus touching my birds all over weird places. Higher seed diet, 13+ hours of light, breeding boxes, I don't get why they didn't want to... ya know... I removed everything and have them on their normal routine now. Try again next spring I guess. I was still feeding them their healthy foods, maybe they were ignoring the seeds. They are always out of their cage flying around too, so maybe that didn't help? I would like to breed them at least once and that is all. Just to have the experience of raising and rehoming baby budgies. Depending on how many I get, might keep a few.

@@TheParrotTeacher I got the first 2 in February 2020 (as 3 month olds) the next pair in july 2020 (also 3 months old) then the last 2 rescues not sure of their age at all in dec. either way, they are all well over 1 year old. Online says 10 months old to try at. Maybe they just need another year. Birds are the only thing I've never bred before. So a lot of guess work here! I figured exotic pets and natural behaviors would just kick in. I did everything to reduce hormonal triggers since I got them as well. I am just going to go back to that. Try again next spring. Bit late now I think.

I do everything wrong apparently. My guy when I got him he was in a cage and he hated it, so I let him out. His cage is now my house and his bedroom is in the coat rack (we don't use anymore, anything that was there when pinia claimed it it's still there,I wash it when needed) between my kitchen and my animal room and the back porch. He goes to bed when the birds go to bed outside and he gets up when the birds get up outside, the back porch is screened in and is attached to the animal room. The back porch is where he spends most of his time. I think he gets enough sleep.
