    Thanks for this vid! My budgie, Julian seems to be experiencing a lot of these symptoms at ~8 months old. I though he was sick (displaying some sick behavior that happened when i first got him) and we spent $85 at the vet just for him to tell me that he was a horny teenage parakeet LOL oh well. Im glad hes not sick and that i know the behavior now.

    I too live in Canada and spring has sprung here. Our usually quiet 4 year old Eclectus has started screaming so loud it’s shocking! I’m guessing she’s hit puberty too. She also seems to be looking for small places to nest and hide. Your video has been the most informative I’ve seen, so thank you much for the tips!

    This is a great video. I love that you talk about the parrot hormones including puberty, because I think a lot of people don't even consider it as a thing! I know that when I was growing up with pets (including a bird), I was never told that they would go through puberty. All I knew was that they had breeding seasons. Which also mystified me and I definitely would have read about all of this in detail if the information had been there for me. But that was pre-internet with few & severely outdated library books.

    Very helpful and timely. My parrotlet bit me hard today for the first time on my eyebrow and my lip. I was fuming! Did not handling it the right way, but after I cooled down. I took him out again and made sure to keep him away from my face. And gave him lots of positive attention for his good behavior. He is six months and it is spring. He is showing other signs of being hormonal too like the wiggle dance.

    My parrot would stare at me and try to fly in my face. Luckily I was able to block it. I can't ignore a sawing back and forth onmy thumb and not letting go. I've even had him grab onto 1 thumb with his feet and bite me on the other hand and not let go. I couldn't get either hand free for a few seconds but pain and adrenaline won out.

    I think my little budgie is starting to get this way (poor thing T_T). She was doing something the other day, acting like she was bathing/playing in my hair, and I couldn't tell if she was just being playful or trying to enact some nesting behavior? I want to provide her with stuff to make her more comfortable during this time. Any suggestions?

    My green cheek suddenly bites me to blood without a reason. I know he's body language and when he's irritated, but now, he's almost lived a year with me and my daughter. He s very tame, sleep on my neck every night, suddenly he attac us or bite 😢hard. Very hard not to react with dragging our hands back. I never wanted my bird in the cage, but he over night started to bite us. Before he attacked everyone but us. Now usually he sits on me all the time and if I put him down, he just flies back, so when he bites and it's hard, I take him in hes cage again. Try to teach him that if you bite, you go in your cage. Or he bite and comes back and bite again... My daughter has became scared. He also has head up and down and throws up and swallows it again. And has became territorial with the microwave 😂, the couch, me and hes cage. What should I do different. If it's puberty, now it's may, how long... He s now like he was when we first got him exept, not so hyper and doesn't small bite all the time, but hard angry bites suddenly. First I pet he's head and talk and everything is fine, then pow, he bites... I m so sad and scared because I so much want him to be happy, free and be my trusted friend again 😍😢. Sooo hope it will pass. Does he need another bird for company or...

    Where in Canada are you? I have a 3 yr old male parrotlet who was abused for 2 years by his first owner, a 9 month old Green Cheek Conure who is a real clown and sweet, and then there is the almost 2 yr old Green Cheek Conure who the previous owner kept in a cage with a male, and the 2 birds bonded and got aggressive towards her, and she put her for sale saying she was terrified of her. I have had her for a month and if I let her out, she will land on me and take treats, but no touching. I am trying to get her to step up, which she will on my arm only, but if she can see skin, she will take a bite rather than the treat. Based on her behaviour, I think she is a male. We see the avian vet next month and I will get some blood to DNA her/him.

    I had watched a previous video on bird biting and such... I was under the impression that in the wild (or caged) when a bird bites another bird TOO hard they screech and fly away, so when you're bitten by a bird you're supposed to scream and storm out of the room as a sign of "that wasn't okay, don't bite that hard!" but I could be wrong! it could also depend on your choice and your bird.

  • @PippyPets

    You are right - that behaviour appears in the wild, however, many times it’s employed when one member of a bonded pair senses danger and wants the other mate to leave for safety reasons - they nip them to get them to move. Captive parrots who view their humans as mates may display this behaviour. Captive parrots can learn to manipulate humans/situations using their beak and are very good at learning that concept quickly. 😊. Getting our skin ripped off generally isn’t a way we want to teach our birds to communicate their needs to us. Regardless of the reason a parrot bites a human, giving the parrot a reaction like screaming or shouting or making a fuss will reinforce in the parrot’s mind that the behaviour is positive and should be displayed again in future - something humans don’t generally want hahaha.

    My bird started acting weird as soon as he fully accepted her new mate. That took 2 months and now she bites me. All she does is sitting on the bottom of the cage and staring at me. When i open the cage she sits in the door opening and sometimes flies to me to bite me and when i move or make noise she quickly goes back to the bottom of the cage

    +Kathleen Monsegue Hi Kathleen, thanks for watching! In my experience, I find they can both be equally hormonal, and particularly if they are in close proximity to a parrotlet of the opposite gender. If you only have one Parrotlet and she's very tame, at least in my experience, there's a good chance you won't see the full spectrum of hormonal behaviour - but again - each parrot is different. Making sure she's really, really tame before puberty is your best bet to avoiding the worse of any hormonal behaviour. Congratulations on your baby! :-)

    THanks for this video. My two parrotlets hit puberty really hard at the moment and I feel like they're becoming really skittish and flighty and not really interested in trick training etc, even though they were pretty tame, curious and fearless a few months ago and would really pick up trick training with fun and exitement. Now I'm feeling, I'm losing my relationship with my two parrotlets, even though nothing has changed. Is that normal during hormone season and/or puberty? They hatched March 2020, so they're a little over a year old now.

  • @PippyPets

    @PippyPets

    3 жыл бұрын

    That can be totally normal. Be considerate of them but continue to interact with them normally to keep them tame. They will get past this stage in a few months. Also bear in mind they may end up bonding closer to each other now if they are a male/female pair which may also account for some of the skittishness. Some prefer to separate the two birds to help ensure as close a bond with the owner as possible as opposed to a stronger sexual bond with the other bird which can influence, at times, levels of skittishness.

  • @Namoraslife

    @@PippyPets thanks so much for the quick response. Of course I will interact with them normally and sometimes, we have beautiful hangout times, but on other days, they won't even look at me. I don't mind them bonding more to each other, but I'd want them to be more curageous and curious again. They're literally afraid of everything and learning new things no longer seems interesting to them... So I'll just be patient and sit through this weird puberty stage and separating them is no option for me, they alwayys cuddle so cute at night I don't want to take this away :)

    My cockatiel is only 7 months old and it is spring time. Could she be hormonal? She will walk around making soft chirping noises and if I talk to her then she will lift her wings a tiny bit.

  • @biggusmunkusthegreat

    @biggusmunkusthegreat

    7 months sounds a tad early - normally 8-9 months according to my research about cockatiels. Soft chirping noises can be just a sign of contentness, and wing pointing towards you is a sign of happiness and trust in most parrots. Usually signs of hormones are a bit more prominent.

But I know nothing about them and I'm trying my best to understand their behaviours. The female is a.lot younger than the male and I think has just gone through puberty because the feathers on her head have changed colour and now she has a little cap like the male ... and she has got more bitchy 🤣 does this pass!? The bitchiness. Is it a monthly thing like humans or yearly the hormone cycle. I feel bad for the boy. He is so sweet and tries to socialise with her but the last 2 days she is not.having any of it. Please.help. how long does it last. Will the male be ok dealing with it!?
