    Your's and Sophie's videos are really helpful. I recently got a very seperation anxious cockatiel who was handraised due to abandendment and she is flock calling so loudly when we leave the room. I always make sure she has lots of foraging activity, because she is usually outside the cage all day, so she doesn't realize we are gone as quickly. So far I tried to ignore the screaming and wait 3 seconds before entering again so not to reward the behaviour but maybe I should, like you said, try calling back sometimes to reassure her we are there.

    During the pandemic I have been working from home, and usually I'm just laying on the bed while working on my laptop. My cockatiels in the same room sometimes think I'm being too motionless and checks in with me to see if I have died since I'm not moving much xD they usually do a repeated ear-piercing scream that sounds like a car alarm or a fire alarm going off :D

    Just wanna share a story about my two pineapple conure. 4 days ago I put my conure cage outside on the back garden under the shade (I usually do that during the day, they love seeing butterflies and other small wild birds. Besides, in my city, there are no such thing as a predatory bird or any dangerous wild animals) I left them there for 3 hours while I was working from home, and some of my windows are open for natural ventilation. After 3 hours, I saw one of them flying and perching near my bedroom (I was on the second floor) I was shocked seeing him outside the cage (This is when I realised I forgot to close one of the small doors on the cage), I picked him up and ran downstairs towards the garden to look for the other conure. When I arrived, I saw my other conure lying on the floor with wings spread out and a numb leg. I realised she must have hit the window while flying around. I cried and brought her to my room, saying sorry and trying to comfort her while looking for a vet nearby through my computer. I have never taken my pet to a vet before so I was not familiar with that. A couple of minutes later she started eating and flying around and perched above my window curtain. She stayed there and tried to close her eyes since she was weak. I panicked and tried to call her to come down. During that time, the other conure just stayed beside her while she tried to close her eyes. Then one of the vets replied to my message and asked me if the conure have any open wounds or vomiting. I said I did not see any wound or vomit. Then the vet asked me to just keep monitoring the conure since she can still eat and fly. Fast forward, I took her to the best avian vet in my city and the vet said she is okay, only a minor bruise inside the beak and he gave her some medicine. Some things I learnt: 1. I realised my male conure tried to ask for help, that is why he flew and perched near my bedroom. If he didn't fly there, I would never know that both of them are outside their cage, and maybe my female conure is beyond saving. 2. ALWAYS double-check the cage before leaving the conure. I made that stupid mistake and will make sure that it won't happen again. Today both of them are doing fine. Although, the female conure is still a bit traumatised after hitting the window.

    Hey RL23, Really glad both are ok and behaving normally now. It's quite lucky that he alerted you and that both didn't end up flying away or being hurt! Definitely keep an eye on that cage lock in the future. You could even put a cable tie around it when they are outside just to make sure then cut it off when you bring them back inside! Do you know target training? That may prove invaluable if it happens again!

    Sometimes my birds try to communicate with the birds outside. And here we have wild parrots (cherry headed conures) that fly by and sometimes hang out on buildings in large flocks in the area we live in. They also do an alarm call when they see these little fruit flies that we now have in our apartment from the composting bins down in the basement. We are trying to get rid of the fruit flies with UV light traps at night, but the city mandates composting and the green bins aren’t airtight. So the birds do this particular SCREAM every time they see these flies, which we have a lot of lately. They also scream when there’s construction in the area, and when the people who live above us walk loudly and drop things above us. Having birds in a downtown apartment in a city is a challenge :)

    Oh dear the fly problem could be annoying I'd imagine! Constant naughty flies about lol Our flock don't like bugs much although it's mostly moths they make a noise about! It's cute you have wild parrots outside! Must be cute to see them! All we have in the UK in the south are ring necks. They escaped ages ago from some collection, bred, thrived and are all over london and the south east now! Sadly they want to destroy them all as an invasive species. I feel that'd be a terrible shame/crime.

  • @dorkusamericanus

    @dorkusamericanus

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@TheParrotTeacher oh yes, my city has talked about destroying the cherry head conures as an invasive species also, just like the Indian Ringnecks where you live. I wonder if they truly are causing any kind of problems, like are they displacing any kind of native species? If not then they should let them be! There’s a documentary about the conures in my city, maybe you’ve seen it - The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill? There’s a bird rescue group that I got my parrotlet from that also helps rescue and rehabilitate these conures. They’ve had some up for adoption, and I would love to adopt one or two, but these are truly wild birds that grew up flying around in flocks, so I wonder if they could ever learn to step up and be trained like a pet that was born in captivity can be?

    Mine flock has different calls depending on if it’s Amazon delivery or different person to the door maybe we order a lot of Amazon 🤷🏽‍♀️. My dogs know what bird calls mean what and do not watch or listen for people at the door or window. The dogs hear what the birds say is happening and respond. So every time birds say intruder! Dogs say intruder! 🤦🏽‍♀️ This is mostly awesome and I like it except that the birds feel the local neighborhood black cat who is often visiting my yard is an intruder.

    My green cheek gets very upset and does his alarm call whenever we touch our rechargeable batteries for our yard tools. Or when we use a duster. Guess he doesn’t like us doing house work! With that he's become very possessive over his foraging tray and toys that we hide seeds in (he only gets them during training/foraging every day) and will lunge at my hand if it gets close to the tray/toy. Hey Vanessa, The triangle is from Northern Parrots. It's actually part of a set for a foraging toy with lots of them suspending on a pole! But we thought it'd make an easy foraging toy! An outdoor aviary also sounds like a great idea! I have a video about purifiers if it’ll help! It’s a bit of a promotional one but all the information in it is valid for all types of purifier! Regular bathing also helps take the edge off of the dust, provided it’s done properly and when the birds want to
