Just remember that your birds will ALWAYS bite. These are great ways to minimize biting but birds will be birds! Always be patient with your children because it's just natural for them :)

I have raised several species of parrots and have not been bit by any of them. I pay close attention to them and know what their triggers are. I have been mouthed by them when they are babies but this is gentle exploration not aggression. I wont let anyone handle them until I go over their rules and emphasize that ignoring them will result in a bite.

My birds loves me so much , we have a very strong bond. But he will still bite me sometimes 😂 . And sometimes my fingers bleed. But it’s ok . I still love him more than life. He is the cutest thing ever happen to me ❤️ .

I love it that you teach owners to examine their own behavior in what may cause a bite in the first place and that you emphasize consideration for the bird's feelings. We don't really own them, we invite them into our lives. ♥️🦅

Awesome informative video, young Lady! Also, as a bird owner for 30 years, you should know that reaching for their head from above signals aggression or teasing. Approaching from the same level as their eyes, or below is a way to not signal aggression or teasing. Tone of voice also plays a big role in your positive reinforcement - if it bites you, and you scold it verbally, your bird will pick up on it. Likewise, if it behaves in a way you want it to, or does a certain trick or whistles the way you want it to, praise it in a happy positive voice. At a certain point, you can reward them just with your voice, love and affection, rather than always having to give them a treat. Also, when a birds' eyes are at a higher elevation than yours, i.e., on top of a book shelf, if you make eye contact with them, they can become aggressive and try to bite because they feel like they are the dominant species - especially the larger birds. So, approach with care and watch their body language. I had one bird for 25 years, and after the first couple months of bonding, he never bit me again, until he as 23, because he was old and tired. However, because I was his best friend, he never drew blood on me even when he did bite. Other people he would on rare occasions, if they annoyed him. Oh, and one form of punishment is blowing air in their face from your mouth - mother birds, at least Cockatiels, have done this. Blowing ar in their face from your mouth and them talking to them in a stern voice for their bad behavior, and then praising them for their good behavior and possibly giving them a treat, PLUS CONSISTANCY will work wonders. If you aren't consistent, they will push the boundaries, just like children, and eventually develop bad behavior.

I've had a 14 year old green cheek since it was a baby. He and I have bonded since day one. He says about 40 words and dances and sings a couple of bars with me. Well, about a year ago, I was bringing him in from his outdoor cage at sundown. I have no idea why he did this, but as he was on my shoulder, he suddenly attacked my back, digging in with his claws and beak and not letting go. I was wearing a strapless dress and couldn't reach him to get him off of me. I ran into the house, and he finally let go. I was so shocked by this resulting in mistrust and fear of him for the blood and scars he gave me that I won't hold him like before. I know he misses me. I have my mate interact and pick him up now occasionally biting him on his hand. We can't see any i indications for his actions. My bird and i still talk, sing and dance but I won't hold him, fearful of him, and I'm sure he can sense this too. Could my bird have decided he just doesn't love me like before?

​@toolbar2345, I think that your bird is jealous of your interaction with your mate. My Green Cheek Cinnamon Conure was very nice from 3 months to 2 years old; she'd always cuddle and play with me but when my daughter began visiting regularly, she began biting my daughter and then me. She'd bite very hard until she drew blood but recently her bites are not as hard and she doesn't draw blood. I'm still trying to stop her from biting. Sometimes she also bites my Orange Winged Amazon but he's a sweetheart and does not bite her or anyone; when she bites him, he runs or flies away from her.

I always enjoyed taming adult captivity birds more than raising them from birth in your hands. More of a challenge but more rewarding. One good thing to learn in bites is to have good pain tolerance (atleast for small parrots) and to instead of pulling your hand away, push it closer to the bird while he bites or drop it a bit if he is on your hand, it will caught him off guard and release the hand and make him learn that biting is not useful in communicating with you.

my bird is obsessed with me and I treat him like a child he goes everywhere with me and he still attacks me lmao. But he is also a year old and molting so he could be very grumpy, pubescent, and hormonal, cause he didn't used to bite this much until he started molting and growing.

This is a well presented and useful video! I'm so glad you talk about how forming a bond, watching body language and not forcing behaviour is so important to helping to prevent biting (or generally just having a good relationship with your bird!) As you mentioned also, blowing, putting back in cage etc falls under punishment, which never works as its proven that parrots don't respond to it! Punishment just teaches fear or negativity. One other thing you can try to moderate bite force is target training from a distance. You hold the stick further away so they have to bite gently. Also the same with providing treats after, encouraging gentle grabbing of the treat.

My bird has never bit me, she practically chose me that's why I ended up with her but she always bites the rest of my family members I can't figure out a cause!

I'm not an expert, but any time a bird chooses you, you can feel very lucky! By the same token, because you are the most important person in his/her life, they can be pretty possessive. It's a good idea to have others start slowly bonding with the bird (watch some other videos on starting to tame) when you are not close by or in another room. It takes time and patience. And don't forget that each bird has its own personality, just like us. Some are more sociable with people, others are more introverted.

I am sorry 😐 but I must say to you Paige that isn't good to have a fake nails when you have a bird and if bird chewing them it is not good because fake nails are toxic. I tell you this like a friend 😀❤️ because same thing happened to me and I must go to a vet save the bird and after that I take down my fake nails. Chewing on your fingernails isn’t the reason your bird doesn’t bite you. They think your fingernails are a chew toy. If you do some thing that they don’t like they’re not going to chew your fingernails… They’re going to bite you.

My parakeet has three types of bites: the friendly nibble, the semi annoyed hard nibble, and the make you bleed beak stab :D Depends on his mood.

I am so glad that I watched this! I have a baby bird that still needed to be hand-fed when I got her, and she's younger than any bird I've gotten before. I didn't realize that she didn't really mean to bite me. The screaming thing will work, I think. We're working on the bond and strengthening it. Thank you!!

I have 4 large Macaws, and biting is part of how they connect with us. Biting can be triggered when they are frightened, when they want to be left alone, when they want to wrestle and play, or simply when they want to preen me. It does take time to realize why your parrot bites, but it is a normal part of aviculture, so there is no reason to try and stop a normal reaction to a variety of emotional or physical triggers. The most important part of caring for any species of parrot, is to simply learn to read their body language, then most bites from 'fear-based triggers' can be reduced significantly.

My new Catalinas macaw fear bites are gentle but when it comes to stepping down she gets pissed. Her eyes pin and she latches onto my arm or fingers. Its extremely difficult to ignore.

Macaws are prey animals, so feeling safe is most important to them. She feels scared when you try and get her to step down. If you give her time to feel safe, she will let you know when it is time to expand your trust with her. A Vietnam vet have me his 26 year old Harlequin Macaw shortly before he died of agent orange exposure. For 4 weeks I did not try and touch him, instead simply allowed him to grieve and process such a huge loss. After 4 weeks Carlos stepped up and we have been very close since that time. It is essential to respect their need for safety, and it can be very easy to stop the trust building process if you continue to pressure her to do what you want, just give her time. I have to put her down sometimes though. I can’t walk around with her all day. I make sure not to put her down right before walking out of the room (because if I did that every time then it might make sense) but I can’t have my Catalina Macaw on my arm 24/7. I have two other parrots that deserve one on one time too. Are you thinking that I meant step up? I don’t doubt that we are in the trust building stage, I understand her body language enough to know that. Are you suggesting not holding her for a few weeks and then maybe things will change? I don’t even have a cage for her yet so I’m only asking her to step down onto one of her two playstands.

I work at a pet store and we just recently got a green cheek in. I’m the primary petcare person and I always make a point to take him out multiple times a day and just let him stretch out and get used to people. My coworker also helps with this so we hope that we keep him as happy as possible in the store.

got my birds over 1 month ago, and they're still babies who are also still trying to get used to their new lives (they're only a few months old) so this definitely helped me, since they do come to me most times, then end up trying to give me a nose piercing 🤣

The only times my pigeon bites my hand is when I'm hand feeding him. My hand is staying still, but he does it cuz he's checking if he can eat my finger or thinks it has food on it (it tickles and it's only a slight pinch) so it's not really a bite

Same but one budgie of mine is aggressive female and it thinks my hand is a food so she bites so aggressively and I don’t know how to warn her not to do that

Great tips; also I’ve been able to use cue words that I know my bird understands for times when she might be thinking of nibbling which could turn into a bite, this puts her in her best mood and I use my voice to convey a calm gentle mood. It works as birds mirror our moods and behaviours which is why getting cross or angry at them doesn’t work.

When my conure does this it is because he wants attention and thinks I've been ignoring him. Like a little kid screaming "pay attention to me!" It is taking a while to train him out of it.

I remember using winter gloves when my bird was on my finger. Sometimes, she'll bite my fingers while stepping on them to keep herself from losing balance. Other times, she'll just do it for enjoyment. She knows I won't feel anything if she bites me when wearing gloves. I did mess with her as a kid by using one of the gloves for her to bite it when I covered her head with it. Kinda gave her a bad habit of biting back then. I stopped doing it when she got older though and tried to work on the stepping on my fingers without biting the gloves. I was kinda afraid that if I stopped wearing the gloves, she would bite me. So, I kept them on most of the time. Sometimes, I would have her climb on my shoulder. She wouldn't bite me there, but I still was afraid she would bite me while she was alive. We kinda had this sibling relationship with each other back then.

I just found your account a couple days ago but I just want to say I love ur channel so much !! I've had my GCC for almost 3 years now, and we have a great relationship, but I want to start doing more training with her to keep her enriched. I've found that a lot of instructional videos don't understand the specificities of green cheek conures (like how they are just so beaky, and you can't just tell them to never use their beaks to climb, explore, etc.), and it also seems that a lot of people don't have quite as personal bonds with their parrots as I do with mine, but I can see that you do have that close bond with yours! love to see it :))) Also this video was super helpful in reminding me that even having a close bond with my bird doesn't mean that she'll never bite, and her biting doesn't automatically mean i'm a terrible owner. Like idk about you, but I tend to compare my bird's and my bond to the bonds that my friends have with their domesticated pets, and how "easily" biting is discouraged in those domesticated animals. But pets like cats and dogs can't really be compared to pet birds, since they're still 100% the same species as in the wild ! As you mentioned in the video, birds use their beaks in a huge number of ways, and while it's good to do what you can to prevent/discourage aggressive behaviors, their instincts will still take over when it comes to defending what they don't want you to touch (like my own computer keyboard lolol), or hormonal season. yayay GCC owners !!

I really wish more folks would research animals before getting them people dont understand how much work they are or they give up on the animal and hurt it or ditch it then it takes a heck of a person to gain trust again. @@wreckergirl2939 thank you! It will be a while before I can! Maybe when I’m a college professor later on in life because I’ll be gone 8 hours a day! I know for a fact a bird will not be happy, so when I’m teaching in college (hopefully online and night classes) I can stay at home for most of the day because birds need to be out their cages for that time 🥰 I refuse to be a bird owner who leaves them like that 😒 that’s abuse!!!

I'm definitely going to try the YIP and place method. The issue is, what if you have a bird that has no consistent triggers for bites, and gives no warning? One of my three rescues, after nearly two years, continues to be decently aggressive and just isn't safe around most people. She's even a bit rough with me even to this day...I know she isn't bad, but she's dive bombed my husbands face and will just randomly bite him. She'll be comfy on him, we feel safe and then, wham. The other two are mostly OK and these tips make sense for them; most of which I know. But what about the truly unpredictable, vicious biters? If you have advice on that, that'd be a life saver.

my sun conures are both rescues. my younger boy went through three homes to get to me , finally his forever home. he is only 6months old. they're both angels! they do nip. all birds do. neither of them draws blood of hurts me often. I love them both dearly

I have a one-year-old sun conure who's my baby; however, he's SO needy all of the time. Like, if I'm home and go to leave the room to get something, he starts screaming his head off and won't stop until I come back into the room. I call out to him to let him know that I'm not far, but it doesn't work. My husband gets so mad at him screaming. Do you have a video or will you make one with tips on how to help my birdie stop screaming so much when I leave the room? P.S. I did my research before I got him, so I know that sun conures tend to scream. I'm just trying to figure out a way to minimize it. Thanks! Love your videos and your birds! They're so pretty! ♥️

I saw a video about this but I can't remember the name. They said to only go to them after they stop screaming, so they don't connect screaming with getting your attention. You could also give them foraging toys around the times that they scream, so they will be busy and not think about you

I homeschool so I’m home all the time and I would totally let him sit on my shoulder the whole day, but he seems to be jealous or something when I don’t give him totally attention. He basically won’t let me function. He bites when I turn the page when teaching my daughter, looking on my phone, typing, remote control, hates cardboard boxes ( can’t open anything, cereal, nothing. Breaks my heart because I want him out of his cage as much as possible and with us all the time.

English is not my first language so I was very confused at the beginning where I thought Parrots was "parents"

I hand feed my budgies carrots and my male budgie (the youngest one) alternates between bitting the carrot and then my hand so idk if he doesn’t like my hands or if he’s just playing because when he bites I try to put him back but it’s really hard to get him off of my hands 😳

Great tips! Can you recommend how to “scold” your bird if they are getting into something bad without getting bit. Most of the time the relationship with my African Grey is great, but sometimes he fixates on something that might be dangerous like an electrical cord. He will nip if I try to take it away & will refuse to step up so I can remove him from the object.

With dog training they say to replace whatever they’re fixated on with a high-value treat. Although be careful they don’t associate the dangerous thing with the treat 😂

For what it’s worth … I make a chutt-chutt-chutt! Sound like a budgie. All parrots seem to recognize this as a disapproval noise …. At least the Australian ones do lol. Important not to overuse it so it stays important

Make sure to teach him/her that being near you is a ""privilege"" (people on bird groups gave me this tip so in passing this on). Basically, when mine would bite me I'd leave her in the room or just remove her from my lap/shoulder for some minutes before accepting her back. (Yes, this breaks my heart too). This taught her that biting only makes me stay far from her so now she only vocalizes to me when something is wrong or just "bites" softly. But hey, your bird might also be biting out of nowhere due to instincts or even behavioral reasons so I'd search about this to know if there any way to help your bird stop or diminish this behaviour. All the luck!

My bird likes to chew on one of my hoodie then goes into frenzy excited mode and I'm often the collateral damage... I ended up stop wearing that hoodie, cuz there are times I can't even get his attention with his favorite treat when he's like that... Kinda scary for a tiny conure... 😳

Really good video! I don’t really know why my birds bite me. I give them treats and while they’re eating from my hand suddenly they bite me, maybe they are curious of my hand or they don’t know that My hand is there

Sometimes they are testing for a reeaction. I find if I can act like it's not in his power to intimidate me, that's good. Also, as she said, once your bird wants to be with you, you can withdraw your attenevery time they bite hard annd they learn to stop because they want you.

My budgie always flies to my hand, and it took a long time for him to have confidence to do that. But the flies to my hand and bites very hard, hurts a lot. When he doesn’t bite, he mates with my hand. Is there any behavior act or detail that I’m missing? I love my little Bob, but sometimes he really hurts me!

It could be their mating season or it could be their personality, my bird bites he thinks he’s playing. It’s just how he shows affection idk for you tho

My blue and gold bites me every time I try and pet her (I bought her off a bird flipper) I’m not sure if she was abused or what but she flinches every time I react towards her I do it slowly to show her I’m not going to hurt her but it’s a once a month thing I’m getting bit I just blow in her face because I know she don’t got a bond with me yet but i think it’s gotten better since I’ve brought her home she’s begun growing all her feathers back and comes in my bedroom when I’m in there just to say hello

Have you tried any target training with your Blue and Gold? If you do it with a chopstick, it seems to be a good way to help develop trust with your bird. It helped me with my African Grey.

Let her come to you. Hands away from her. Talk to her sweetly. Offer treats but not in her face. Get her used to your voice and physical presence before using any hands. Leave her treats at a distance that she can't bite. Fear and distrust must be overcome before expecting her to want to step up. Coax her every day and try to spend as much time with her as possible. If she comes into your room on her own already that's amazing. Let her on the bed. She will eventually be cuddling in their with you. Lots of luck.

If she’s an adult you can’t tame her it has to be a baby

It seems like my bird just wants to eat my fingers. I don’t have parrots but pretty much every time they see my fingers they just bite them, my hair, my lips etc. I have a good bond with them but it’s like they just want to eat me. They bite everything though. Like I will be on my phone and all of a sudden they’re trying to swallow my fingers.

The bird doesn't want you on the phone. My bird will head butt me to get off my phone. Or attack my phone

@Juliankha oh wow. That’s rough! They’re so cheeky though! I was studying and he was chasing my pen/ trying to eat it. He moved on to ripping my hair out after that. My other one just climbs all over me and licks me. 😐

When it’s almost 8 pm , my bird behaviour will change. He will play roughly , signs of him wanting something , which is sleeping . It’s his bed time and he always acts differently approaching that hour. Maybe your birds are trying to tell you something , maybe they want something. They’re trying to get your attention by attacking you .

@@liemsioeming1821 they could be. I think one of my birds just sees my fingers as a food source. My other one is very different. His species is known to be aggressive so he attacks everything and that can’t be changed because that’s a big trait of theirs. He’s gentle and sweet with me. He’s a rescue bird that came back to me after I saved his life. It’s hard to explain but a lot bird rules don’t apply to him. His species are probably hormonal all the time because they breed all year round and he’s always defensive and alerting me of dangers like Halloween masks etc. He’s honestly very gentle with me. He even tries to comfort me when I’m sad. My other bird would probably get scared and fly away from me because he’s so skittish and scared of everything.
