Man jailed for cashing Chase check at Chase Bank

Last year, 28 year old Ikenna Njoku of Auburn, Washington was jailed for 4 days, causing him to lose his job and his car. His "crime": he attempted to case a legitimate Chase check issued to him by Chase Bank. An employee there, assuming him to be a criminal, started the ball rolling that led to his false arrest.

@@sownheard that needs to change, I bet they wouldn’t let it go on this long if it cost them $5,000,000,000 per day until these issues are rectified. The only thing these people understand is money. Treat people wrongly, cause people to suffer because of your mistakes? It will cost them. There needs to be more monetary punishments that are scaled to a percentage of total value of the company. If they had to pay out 50% of their total worth I bet they would have acted quicker. Your actions ruined someone’s life over something that could have been fixed in 30 minutes but you didn’t? Great now half of your company belongs to the person you wronged. Corporations stepping on people is one of the biggest problems we can tackle in the 21st century. The only thing that is more important is pollution and climate change which, corporations are the leading problem which they are also not paying for. I grew up where you needed to be responsible for your actions, big companies need to be held responsible. Fix what you broke, clean up your mess and pay for the damages you caused. Don’t like it? Thats an automatic fine of 25% of your total worth. Still didn’t fix it? Your company is now being liquidated and the money is going towards the problems that you caused and didn’t do anything about while your company gets liquidated to no more and the decision makers in your company go to jail.

You can't get any more proof than that to make an arrest. He has no case against the police. And, they have no obligation to answer a voicemail on a non-emergency line. Chase could have called the front desk at the police station, which open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Or, better yet, call 9-1-1 and say there's an emergency. There was no lack of supervision. lol

In the comments, it says he received a million dollars in a settlement. GOOD FOR HIM he deserves every penny and should have gotten more for punitive damage because a million is pocket change for Chase. I have a feeling that they would have gotten off a whole lot cheaper if they had offered an apology letter and some money to straighten out the damages they caused.

Only problem with Chase paying a million dollars is that they need to skim it off their other customers to pay the damages, so everybody loses except the Chase fat-cats. Best policy is to stay the hell away from Chase and if you have an account there now, pull the money out and go to a nearby credit union.

I wouldn't have accepted an apology because they made him lose his job, his car and his freedom all over some racist ideology that he couldn't have possibly gotten that legal check on their bank in a legal way. When all they had to do was call the company who gave him the check to verify it's legitimacy. I know because I use to work in a bank and did this all the time. They ruined this man's life based on his skin color. And could have possibly gotten him killed, by some overzealous cops.

I use to bank at Chase. They will not call or send a letter about any account being closed by them. They won't even call or notify you about suspicious activity. They closed my savings account without telling me just because it didn't have the balance needed to keep it open and I wasn't even notified about the balance. I also found out someone had used my card online to perches a subscription and never knew until a couple months later when a letter came in saying I was over drawn and owed them over 200 bucks. I argued for over a hour about that shit and I had never used my card online since I got it 4-5 years before that happened which should have been a red flag. I refused to pay. After that they did a investigations and found out it wasn't me but tried making me pay for the investigation. I went straight to a credit union and opened up a account there and had my checks cashed at that place ever since and have had no problems except when I used my card once to pay for a car part online for my grandma of which it was taken care of quickly. Chase Bank is a worthless bank to go to.

There was no case against the police. They were doing their jobs. Chase was WRONG ON ALL ACCOUNTS. The police had to act on the complaint and of course, did not investigate the case any further because the bank alleged he is guilty and because he is a black man, the accusation must be true. Any IDIOT working at the bank should have had the intelligence to locate a live person at the police station rather than leave a voice mail concerning someone that was falsely imprisoned by Chase's RIDICULOUS ERRORS. Love Chase bank's IDIOT response that they're investigating the matter. MORE DOUBLE TALK OR DENIAL that Chase has done anything wrong. Statement by Chase's attorney should have been "REMOVE YOUR MONEY FROM THIS BANK IMMEDIATELY! WE ARE IDIOTS IF WE CAN'T RECOGNIZE LEGITIMATE CHECKS THAT CHASE HAS ISSUED.

april stowe sweetie, why bother with deaf ears and a racist on top of that it's just a waste of your precious time. People that ignorant don't deserve any attention , let along an explanation . I will never address anyone that can't have an adult conversation without being ignorant or throwing insults. Insults only matter or affect you when the person actually matters to you and this case why bother with a racist troll lol but you've made very valid points and you are absolutely right. Stay bless dear

Would have only taken them a minute to verify the issuance of their own check! I hope he got a massive payout because it was deserved.

Moola Moose police acted in response to an allegation.they did their job. Its chase.their fault .negligence for not properly verifying the information.im sure either way Monday he would be before a judge to set bail and be read formal.charges. Either way I do hope chase will get a large penalty for what they did and the dude who was arrested needs to be compensated for loss of freedom loss of car and job and humiliation and stress.

Police are not at fault for the arrest, they are however at fault for negligence for not reviewing their voicemail that would have freed him sooner.

The police should have done their own investigation before the arrest. They are at fault and should be sued
