'Banking While Black': Police video shows how cashing a paycheck led to handcuffs

UPDATE: It happened again. Another U.S. Bank branch called police on another Black customer who was trying to get money from his own account. 5 INVESTIGATES recently obtained the new body camera video, spoke with the customer, and asked the company what it has done to make changes since this first report aired in December. Watch the latest investigation here: • 'Banking While Black':...
Body camera video obtained by 5 INVESTIGATES shows what happened when a U.S. Bank branch in Columbia Heights, MN called police on a 23 year-old Black man, Joe Morrow, who was trying to cash his paycheck. Despite having an account and showing his ID, a bank manager accused Morrow of fraud. Read the full investigation here kstp.com/news/banking-while-b...

But over the past year, 5 INVESTIGATES found those promises of reform have not yet become a reality for many who live here. This is Race. Reform. Reality. As someone who was going to be a cop and has cops as friends the officer was trying to help him by saying that. Officers deal with angry ppl everyday most of which are actually breaking the law. Many of those ppl start making violent threats to the officer or other ppl. Cops are supposed to remind ppl to stay calm because it keeps the situation from escalating, but most ppl no nothing about police or their training and only see the negative behavior of the .01% of police and forget that there are 1 million cops in the US all working 10-12 hour days stopping and interacting with dozens of ppl per day, thousands per year each and done fairly and correctly 99.99% of the time , but that doesn't make it to the news because it isn't interesting and wouldn't provide views and clicks for media to make money so we perceive there to be a huge issue because we only see the bad.

What's so difficult about calling his employer and verifying the check? That way the customer is treated with dignity. If the customer finds out and questions why they called his employer they could simply reply "we've had a large amount of bad checks at this branch so we had to verify the check's authenticity. I love how the officer says him getting mad was a sign of guilt. I’m Canadian but I went to The University of Utah for my degree. One time I was buying some beer, when all of a sudden the cashier at the store accused me of having a fake ID. I explained I was Canadian and that was my Canadian Drivers License because I was just a student and not a Utah resident. I told him all of the information on the license including my name, birthdate, and address. He asked me to recite my license number, and when I told him I didn’t know it off the top of my head (who does) he called the police. I was so mad, not to mention humiliated!! I’m a very easy going person, and am usually a pushover, so it takes a lot for me to get mad. To have some random cashier call the cops on me over something like that made me so frustrated!! I know exactly how this guy feels and know why he got upset. It’s bad enough to be accused of something you didn’t do, but then to have it all go down in front of other customers is humiliating!! I’m sure him being black had a lot to do with why he was accused, however, I’m always careful when assuming it was because of race. I think people make mistakes and are quick to rush to judgement. Hopefully the bank teller and the officers learned from their mistake, and realized they need to fix whatever made them profile this guy. In situations like this, the most important thing for the rest of us to do is realize what happened is wrong, and try to teach our children to respond differently in that situation. That way the future will be better (hopefully) and racism will become less and less common.

The bank manager even lied to police saying he HAD called and been told the check was fake. Firing him was the right thing to do, but it doesn't say much about the bank when a cowardly CEO, Andrew Cicere, didn't have the decency to come on camera and apologize for the incident. Instead, he tried to hide behind empty boilerplate statements of valuing diversity and respect. I don't believe former CEO, Richard Davis, would have handled the situation this way. He was a great leader who set an example of character and decency that is rarely seen in CEOs. Sadly he left the bank a few years ago to be replaced by someone who is apparently lacking those qualities. Cicere should be ashamed of himself.

This is absolutely disgusting. I closed my account there today due to this. I refuse to bank with any and all racist banks. Edit: I closed it the day I saw this video. The bank was really agitated at me and the other 6-7 people in there doing the same thing. Let me be clear that I was NOT the first person to do this, many others have too.

@@UN-intelligent yea but to be so blatantly racist- they deserve for their services to be boycotted, unless there's some serious punishment for this manager. To be so brazenly racist that you call the police and potentially put someone in danger, instead of not lying about verifying the check, if THIS isn't punished it'll only encourage other racists to be a lot more "out there" than they already are

as a police officer i would be straight up pissed if i was called out to the bank and realize that the manager called me onto the scene for nothing. without doing his due diligence. i might have arrested the bank manager for false accusations. run up on the wrong police officer and see what happens.

Yes that was my exact thoughts that bank teller should have been arrested for a false police report and he should have been in handcuffs instead of that young man it rediculous

Imagine how apologetic the bank would be for anything else that's just a minor inconvenience. BUT they call the police and get you handcuffed because they assumed your check was fraud, and no apology.

I agree with because the narrative could’ve been a whole lot different, instead of it being “banking while black” it would’ve been “aggressive black man attacks employ”. And many peoples mind would change quickly because they would’ve started criticizing him and his actions

People who are falsely accused don't always act calm, so to say it makes you look guilty is illogical. Cops play this game a lot. If im shaking, if I look or seem nervous, if I'm angry, and if I'm silent, or whatever color my clothing is doesn't make me seem anything. It's illogical

Sin leads to hell, keep focused, the devil is on earth to destroy your soul. But God wants to give you everlasting Joy. But our sin is keeping this from happening. You must stop sinning and turn to Jesus Christ he is your only hope. He can save you from eternal suffering under the Earth, where hell is hot.. Not everyone who calls me their Lord will get into the kingdom of heaven. Only the ones who obey my Father in heaven will get in. Matthew 7:21.....
