Genesis, From mama tour
Lyrics:
I can't see you mama
Bbut I know you're always there
Ooh to touch and to feel you mama
Oh I just can't keep away
It's the heat and the steam of the city
Oh its got me running and I just can't brake
So say you'll help me mama
Cos its getting so hard
Now I can't keep you mama
But I know you're always there
You listen, you teach me mama
And I know inside you care
So get down, down here beside me
Oh you ain't going nowhere
No I won't hurt you mama
But its getting so hard
Can't you see me mama
Mama mama mama please
Can't you feel my heart
Can't you feel my heart
Can't you feel my heart ooh
Listen to me mama
Mama mama
You're taking away any last chances
Don't take it away
Can't you feel my heart?..
It's hot, too hot for me mama
But I can't hardly wait
My eyes they're burning mama
Make the pain, make it go away
No I won't hurt you mama
But its getting so hard
Now I can't see you mama
But I know you're always there
You taunt, you tease me mama
But I never never cen keep away
It's the heat and the steam of the city

Yes. He sounds like he's going to blow a gasket! Great stuff that I didn't appreciate when it came out back in the day when I was maybe 14 or so. Didn't have the experience of adult stress and drives just yet at that time, but I can appreciate the passion of the song these days.

One of the best singers ever. He's so consistent, so fluid it almost sounds as if it's actually the studio version. There's no additions to his voice. There's no special effects or any kind of filters or anything. It's just pure Collins smashing it out.

I know 80's Genesis gets a lot of stick from people but this is gold. Even as late as the album this track came from they were releasing great material. Mama is one of my favourite songs of theirs. It's really dark and sinister in parts, especially the Synclavier melody at the beginning and the section from 3:22 where the keys and bass pedals join up. Spectacular. Phil's vocal performance is up there with the best I've ever heard too. What a great version this is (I remember seeing it on telly right around the time it came out).

Gary Palma We always called him the Crazy Little Limey Bastard, but we meant it as a serious compliment. I remember his very first acting gig- he did a guest episode on Miami Vice called Phil the Schill, and guess who Phil was? Yup! His character could out-shyster Izzy Moreno! The episode aired in 1985, the year I graduated from high school! Phil was such a hoot in that episode! Kinda not surprising they gave him an eppy, since they were always using his music. And turns out, Phil could act! I love him best as a musician, though. Phil will be 66 on Monday, how 'bout that? Have a good time out with Mike and Tony, you Crazy Little Limey Bastard!

WHY was Phil Collins dismissed as AOR cheesy fluff back in the day? I'm 31, so I remember the days in the late 80s when Phil Collins' voice was blasting through EVERY mall PA system in the known universe...so I suppose I can see why people got a bit sick of him. But....performances like this remind me why the man was such a massive success. I mean...THAT is a voice. How is that any less epic than Freddie Mercury? I bet most people don't even know Collins can sing like THIS.

Don’t get it. I never got enough of seeing Genesis or Phil’s concerts. They were the best and from 1977 till today, I never missed a show. Back in the day people expected you to stay the course but Phil played what he wanted so some thought he was a sell out but he clearly wasn’t it. The people older then me maybe didn’t like the stuff on the late 70s and the 80s but then, go listen to somebody else. Lol. I never got sick of him and during live Aid it was great to see him play in his home Country then hop a plane to Philly and play at JFK Stadium. The guys a legend.

Fantastico!

All those musicians back then can actually PLAY instruments en sing LIVE. So sad todays artists can't even reach this level with all their much better equipment compared to that 30+ years ago.

Phil said years ago that his inspiration for this song was the book, "The Moon's A Balloon"....about a young man's obsession with an older prostitute.....though Phil put a more sinister twist to it. He's wants to kill this woman if she doesn't comply. Anyone remember the Magnum PI episode where there was a weirdo killing hookers? They played this song.

@@brianadams5088 Mike and Tony may own Genesis but without a great singer like Phil, a good song may do nothing. It’s also about performance, charisma and stage presence, etc and Phil has them all. It’s a win-win combo with these three.

Funny you should say that I saw genesis at their last tour in 07 and I felt not having been a fan of Genesis but More P.C. due to my age ... but Phil was the entertainment and the performer and he kept the concert Amazing because TB and MR are both great but they are not entertainers they literally just add the amazing backing sound ... but I was disappointed that they didn’t get more Involved in terms of speaking to the crowd... but I can’t fault their Musical ability they are true artist! I saw Phil at Hyde park and he was just as amazing at 60 odd and sat down! Love you Phil you truly are amazing x

The power and range in his voice is incredible on this. Phil probably destroyed voice that night but was worth it. Wembley 1987 and Knebworth 1990 was good as well but his range had started declining then. He really wore his voice to death in the 80's. He set the vocal bar very high in Genesis and solo.

It Amazes me that when Peter Gabriel left Genesis back in the day they Couldn’t even Find a Replacement as a Lead Singer for the band so from my understanding Phil Collins Reluctantly took over the Lead Singer’s role and. I Believe that It Worked Out rather Well in the Long Run for the Band as well as for the Solo Careers for both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins don’t You Think ? I’m Very Grateful that I Was Able to See Them In Concert at the United Center in Chicago years ago when they came Back !!!! It Was A Great Show For One And ALL !!!!!!!
