On albums, Phil did vocals and drums, Mike did guitar and bass, and Tony did keyboards. On tours, Chester Thompson played drums (joined occasionally by Phil on instrumental sections) and Mike traded guitar and bass songs with Daryl Stuermer. All are extraordinary musicians, which is why their live shows were always so great.

I think “Mama” is a story about a young boy who is obsessed with an older prostitute. I believe it took some inspiration from a true memoir of actor David Niven who slept with a 45 year old prostitute at the age of 19 and fell in love whilst knowing it would never go anywhere. The genesis song also has a darker overtone that the character is obsessed enough to potentially kill her to keep her for himself, according to interviews with Phil.

Phil Collins and Genesis- WOW !!!!!!!! Truly masters of their craft. I wasn’t at this specific concert but did see them twice when they were touring. The hardest part was trying to keep it together while you waited for them to come on stage. Then the second you heard his voice a hush would fall and it was like being in a magical place. His voice, the music and a little reefer and the world was a better place! Definitely watched to the end, thanks for the reaction.

The songs theme involves a young mans longing for a particular prostitute. The inspiration of the laugh that Collins did was from rap music pioneer Grandmaster Flash’s song “The Message” Great times back then.. please react to Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show.. “ A Little Bit More” or “ Cover of The Rolling Stones.”

Phil's evil laugh is from The Message by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. I wasn't at this show but I have seen them many times. I'm going in December. Hopefully if everything's okay. There's so much Genesis you haven't heard. There's 3 original members here. There were 5. Phil started as the drummer not the singer. You have so much to check out. Peter Gabriel was the singer. Mike Rutherford plays bass and guitar in the studio. Steve Hackett used to play lead guitar. Tony Banks on piano and keyboard. Chester Thompson is second drummer used to play with Frank Zappa. Chester also toured with Phil on solo tours. Daryl Steurmer on guitar on tour with Genesis and Phil's solo tours and Phil's albums. Genesis with Peter on vocals is phenomenal. Totally progressive Rock. In the genre of YES and Pink Floyd.

Per Wikipedia: Our manager, when he first heard it, thought it was about abortion, the kind of feeling of the, you know, the fetus, if you like, saying to the Mother 'Please give me a chance, can't you feel my heart, don't take away my last chance', all those lyrics are in the song but in fact what it is, is just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him.

Genesis, in the studio, is made up of Phil Collins on drums and vocals, Tony Banks on keyboards, and Mike Rutherford on guitar, bass, and bass pedals. When they play live, they add Chester Thompson on drums, and Darryl Struemer on guitar and bass (he and Rutherford trade off depending on the song), so they can pull the music off live. Sadly, Genesis did their farewell tour about a year ago, due to Phil Collins’ declining health (he performed the whole show sitting in a chair). Phil’s son actually played drums for him on their last tour.

This is actually a Phil Collins concert where he is performing a Genesis song. He brought out Genesis members Tony Banks (piano) and Mike Rutherford (guitar) to perform it with him. Yes, that is part of the song. A lot of people thought it was a song about abortion, but Phil later explained it was about a teenager who develops a mother-like fixation with a prostitute.

Tony Banks is the Boss as far as Genesis goes. He is the one most responsible for their sound.

As a teenager this was the song I would blast in my room when I was having a bad day. I think I was hoping someone would knock on the door and tell me to turn it down so I could argue with them. No one ever did, not with this song anyway. I wonder if they just knew that I was brooding and better undisturbed.

Totally different effect when they played this inside (or non-daylight) where the lighting could have its true impact. And yes, Tony Banks is a fantastic keys man. Every single musician on that stage is totally legit.

Yeah, the story Phil gave about "HaHaHaaaa" was that he heard Grandmaster Flash use that line in a song, and Phil was inspired by it and decided to just try it out and do it the best way he could, of course he ad lib and added the howl at the end. And the group liked it and kept it in the recording. 😉
