I would say that with few exceptions Genesis' live performances are better than their studio versions.
You were blown away by the live performance. Now go listen to the studio version to have your mind blown a second time.

Sorry, it is a crime to call this Genesis. When Gabriel left they became something different- not Genesis!
According to Phil Collins, the song is "just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him." It's a haunting, eerie, and moody song --- starkly different from all of the other pop music you'd hear on the radio in the early 80s. A real classic, it hasn't lost any of its impact 40 years later.
I just had to watch this reaction to my favorite song by Genesis. Phil gave us so much good music. It's heartbreaking to know he's not in good health. I hope he knows how many of us are so thankful for the year's he gave us his all ❤.
One of my favorite genesis songs.
You CANNOT find bands today putting out this level of musical excellence. I challenge anyone to find one

Chester Thompson is one of the all-time greatest drummers. He sits in the pocket with precision then hits you with a powerful fill without doing too much, but you know he was there, then settles in again

He has to be if he’s playing all Phil’s drumming when he tours with them. 😉👍🥂
Genesis with Peter Gabriel on lead vocals is very different than Genesis with Phil on lead vocals.... Go listen to Cinema Show, Firth of Fifth, Carpet Crawlers, Dancing with the Moonlit Night... and of course that really long one. Then compare with Pop era Genesis when Peter was no longer around. Both eras are exceptional....

@@396Cap Yea - same with Steve Hackett when he tours solo. Genesis is one of those bands -- pure magic at every level. That era of Progressive Rock when Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, Rush... to name a few... were live and touring was the golden age of ProgRock.

This is hands down, the BEST reaction I've seen from you thus far. Genesis is simply amazing. I look forward to more of your videos. 🎼
I saw the second show on the 83 Mama tour in Normal, IL. I was delivering pizza during the first show there and saw Horton Fieldhouse all lit up with color. The building was shaking from the keyboards and Taurus pedals. Bought a ticket for the 2nd night and was right next to the stage. Saw them a few months later in Peoria, completely different show. Varilites were amazing. Phil was one of the best frontmen and drummers I've seen.
The whole Album is the bomb.
I've inherited my sisters Genesis Mama album on vinyl when she died in 1985. She was only 18yo. I was 10 and desperate as she was everything for me: my older sister, my mother, my friend, my idol. The kindest and most sensible soul. I didn't speak English back then, so the title and the emotions where what helped me express my grieve. Especially the scream. Until this day, this song and Phil's voice gets me.

Genesis came to Orlando in 1987 and sold out the Citrus Bowl in less than 20 minutes. This was before the Internet, of course. You can't overestimate how influential they were in the 80s.

Ripples... beautiful song...
I was never a big Genisis fan, or Phil Collins but I've always loved this song since it came out.
Hello Polo, I was 14 years old in 1983 and enjoyed this great time of music. Back then, people went to concerts even if it cost them a lot. I've seen some of the great Ones live... I still get goosebumps, it's priceless.

I turned 15 in 1983 and it was a super turbulent time in my life as my father was divorcing my mother… Music kept me alive back then and Genesis was definitely near the top of the list of my favorite artists of the day. Listening to Phil singing brings me instantly back to a wonderful road trip I took with my friend and her family to the mountains in California when I so desperately needed a respite. Awesome voice and good times.
He got the idea for the "ha ha" part from 'The Message' by Grandmaster Flash, which they were listening to while writing this record.
I was hoping you would get to his one. The drums are a heartbeat so amazing and Phil’s voice Amazing!
I forgot how great this song was! Thanks! 😊
What was the biggest concert at Knebworth? The record attendance of 375,000 fans over three nights in August 2003 at the Hertfordshire England, estate has never been broken in the UK. Despite decades of performances at Knebworth Park, its current owner said the Robbie Williams shows remained the "best I've ever seen".29 Jul 2023
I've not seen this before. Great performance. Thanks
Polo, Phil rarely gets the vocal credit he deserves... I mean, he had to go up against the likes of Freddie Mercury, Ronnie James Dio and so many other greats in the 80s, but honestly the studio version of MaMa is some major vocal excellence! If you liked this live version, then check out the studio version. When he sings "my EYES are burning mama...", you swear the dude must have blown his own head off by hitting that power note.

One of my favorite Genesis songs! Thanks for the incredible reaction! Was lucky to see them live back in the 80s!
Same as Jon Anderson with YES He also has his own voice that you instantly recognize. Phil is an incredible Singer but most of all A Great Drummer with many signature beats.
Yup studio version is fire 🔥 And a must. Great reaction as usual my friend and Peace out ✌️ ☮️
Genesis was my first concert as a kid. Thank cousin Bill.
I grew up listening to 99% of the music you react to, I've got to say it brings back wonderful memories.
He kept that growl at “down here” 5:43 … a peek at the animal. And your face of realization 8:34 here, Polo! Priceless! Thank you so much!
That’s Chester Thompson on drums. He and Phil shared duties and often played together. They were incredible together.
Love this song! Great reaction! Imagine sitting the middle of a room with with a really good and powerful stereo with multiple speakers and such listening to this powerful song for almost 7 minutes. Stunning. ❤❤❤ Supposedly, here’s the explanation of Phill’s “laugh”: “the inspiration for the laugh came from rap music pioneer Grandmaster Flash's song ‘The Message’”.
Phil brings me to TEARS!
Incredible Drum DUET w/Phil & Chester Thompson from their “1987 Invincible Touch Tour at Wembley Stadium.” The instrumental/medley they go into directly after is unreal as well with amazing light show. Well worth watching. 👍🥂
This is a great live version but I think this song is one where the studio version is better. They also cut out a verse from this live version. I would definitely check it out if you get a chance.

LOL, you even mention Genisis to my brother and he breaks out singing songs from that album. Still humorous to see that even today
I've loved GENESIS forever!
Grandma does love them 🥁 drums ❤✌️ Polo...
Phil, as the drummer for Genesis when Peter Gabriel was singing, was content on the drums. He never wanted to be up front. Thank God he was talked into it! Abacab is an excellent album
Hey Polo: Phil used an audio processing technique on this song (and on the famous drop on 'In the Air tonight and on many other songs too) known as Gated Reverb (invented by Peter Gabriel's sound engineer Hugh Padgham) which uses a 'gate' to cut off the end of the very loud and 'muddy' drum reverb, which produces the unique drum sound you're hearing. Gated Reverb became one of the signature sounds of 80's pop music.
That's Chester Thompson backing him up on drums, he took over drumming for Genesis when Phil became the lead singer
Great request
Yes, you pronounced Knebworth correctly. I grew up nearby and used to play in that field! Incidentally, l was also there for that performance. It was a biggish crowd 😀😀😀😀
Phil put gates on his drum sound, it was blowing ppls minds off at the time
Yes!!! One of the best Genesis songs ever! ❤
I was there! The most amazing live performance I’ve ever been to ❤
I've been following your channel for a long time cuz I'm a Tool fan, but this is probably my favorite Genesis recording ever. Thank you so much for doing this song Polo.
Someone probably said it, but that drumming comes from Phil's original drumming in the studio.
Genesis/ PC solo.. are crazy good.. Studio version amazing..Tonight Tonight Tonight great song
I was there. So many great acts: Floyd, McCartney, Page and Plant, Elton John, and loads more. Rained most of the day 😂❤😢
Had the pleasure to attend this concert what an amazing lineup that played
I was there!!! Still one of the best gigs I've ever seen (& I've seen loads!!!) Thank you Polo. ❤ xxx
3 buzzer approved song! I totally agree sir!
Gets better every time you listen to it!😜
I bought their album on cassette when it came out! I played the livin' iron oxide off of that mylar cassette tape! It was the one with the yellow puzzle pieces on the cover. It was their 12th release simply called "Genesis". I was then fortunate enough to see them on tour that same year at a place I'm not sure I remember, but it was at an arena in Tampa or Orlando or Lakeland! I saw Phil Collins come over to the stage left speakers. He sat down & sang this song from about 20' away! Good times!
I just can’t help but associate this song (and In the Air Tonight) with Miami Vice. It just triggers me to recall the show and that time of my life whenever I hear them. I feel an “air of menace” in the lyrics and the music that I honestly don’t recall hearing from any other artist or band, which is why it was so impactful on Miami Vice and enhanced the show brilliantly.
Let’s give props to Chester Thompson on drums he can go toe to toe with PC anytime!!! Great reaction ✌🏻
Genesis w/Phil Collins is 3 of the best concerts I have ever attended! The 1st Texas Jam, and the Eagles "When hell freezes over" round out my top 5...
Man, we were blessed. Today's music is just so dull in comparison.
Amazing band!!! I have to go listen to "Home by the sea and 2nd home by the sea" next!!

Home By the Sea... PLEASE!
It's the Silver Clef Award/foundation thing concert and lots of good bands played at this one and it was also released as a 2CD
Space. That's what make the drums so powerful in this song. The space between hits is just as impactful as the hits themselves. Often the best music ever written uses silence as just another instrument.
Talking about his voice .. check "Biko | Peter Gabriel | Playing For Change | Song Around The World" .. Peter was the former singer of Genesis and Phil was the drummer. Peter left and Phil switched from drums to singer. Voices are quite close imho. Also a nice title as you dicovered PFC recently .. this is a perfect match!
Yes please, do the studio version! Do it with us, please. Ty!
Genesis is like a buffet. From its various eras (prog art rock, more approachable prog rock, and pop) there is so much to choose from. For an off the beaten path song, I recommend Chamber of 32 Doors. Amazing.

Sometimes Less is More my brother 👍. Followed this great band from the Peter Gabriel day's first time around 🎉. Such a deep deep catalogue 🎶🎵🍯🤌🙏💪🐝🍀
The studio version is awesomeness..you gotta hear the production quality. Highly recommend it.
Was an amazing concert, Silver Clef, Tears for Fears opened with Bad Mans Song, also worth a listen.
Knebworth '90 was a festival. Not only was Genesis, but Paul McCartney, Robert Plant w/ Jimmy Page & Pink Floyd, so you can imagine the crowd.
I saw Genesis on the tour for this album in the mid 80s. I think they’re one of the few bands that their live performance is pretty true to the studio. Phil’s great voice had a lot to do with that. I’d recommend you do Home By The Sea next.
You were born in 1983, I was born in 1973. That year, Genesis made their best prog rock album ever (to me), "Selling England by the Pound". You should react to this area, with Phil, Mike and Tony, but also with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett (Firth of Fifth, Dancing with the moonlit knight). Amazing !
You need to look up the origin of how he created that drum sound. It was a complete accident and changed the music industry at that time. I know because I was a recording engineer at that time and we all had to figure out it was done because everyone wanted that drum sound on their tracks.
Man on the Corner- Genesis
I really like Phil Collins so this ls a cool thing to see with him playing with his band Genesis
That demonic laugh is so Phil. He is a funny character. You see it in the video for Easy Lover and I Wish it Would Rain with Clapton.
This song is on my phone play list ❤
Did you know that Phil was pushed out of his comfort zone to sing lead for Genesis after Peter Gabriel left the band? Sometimes the best singers are hiding in the background. Lucky for us some of them did go out of their comfort zone. Like Randy Meisner for example, when he sang Take It To The Limit with The Eagles

I hope at some point to watch your reaction to the Genesis dual part song "Home by the Sea / Second Home by the Sea".
Simply mesmerizing! Such exceptional vocal talent. Power, passion, and control. Love it!
I love Phil's drumming! I love all great drummers from this Era! Neil John Keith Stewart
I love this song so much. The original video is great.
This is one of my favorites and the live was good but find the studio version too please!
Knew you would love this one!
When this album came out I was in High School and before the "interwebs" so knowledge was acquired thru hearsay...We were under the impression it was a song from a baby's perspective and asking his/her Mama not to give up
Yeah love to see the studio version reaction as well. Cheers!
I listened to “three sides live” on cassette tape nonstop commuting to university in the late 80s lol
