Malaysian PM defends Hamas, condemns West 'hypocrisy' | DW News

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has spoken out about what he called Western "hypocrisy" over the war in Gaza compared to attitudes to Ukraine. Speaking to DW's Richard Walker in Berlin, Anwar slammed Western countries such as Germany for in his view failing to use their influence to make Israel halt the fighting. He argued that Hamas's unprecedented terror attacks of October 7th 2023 were "understandable" in the context of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
This extensive interview explores the deepening divisions in global attitudes to the Middle East Conflict. The West broadly rallied to Israel's side after Hamas killed more than 1,000 people and kidnapped hundreds on October 7th. But as casualties in Gaza have mounted even higher, that unity has fractured, and many in the Global South have voiced anger over perceptions that the West is indifferent to civilian suffering on the Palestinian side. Anwar Ibrahim expresses this anger - and goes on to set out why he believes in improving relations with Iran despite its repressive regime, and why he opposes "phobia" towards China. And finally he gives his reflections on his more than 10 years behind bars in Malaysian jails.

Imagine going to court and told the judge that your client has "the right to defend himself" against his victim, whom he had kept locked up & abused for 75 years. Furthermore, name-calling the victim a "terrorist" for resisting the abuse. That's the logic of the West.

I heard from Malaysians majority that the minority are quite obviously given a disadvantage and that the majority knows this but still actively exploit the system which the governance have created for them. If the minority strikes up one day, would the world or even the prime minister understand that this is okay? I mean, it's understandable right as some of the minorities growing up there can't be given the same opportunity purely because of their race?

I don't condone any civilians getting caught in the crossfire. But in Israel civilian is a grey area. Pretty much anyone of military age are reservists of the Israeli army. They have all enlisted in the army as its compulsory that Israelis serve in the IDF. Morover, Israel deliberately puts settlers in border territory to dissuade attacks since they know that generally the Palestinian resistance is hesitant to attack civilians that occupy their former territories. The rocket attacks are intended as a nuisance. the resistance has shown what they can do if they really wanted to target civilians.

@@kaytee1127 I think the same argument is applied for the zones which are heavily impacted now. Anyone could take up arms to support the resistance, as seen on the very day which allowed this escalated event.. any Tom Dck and Harry could join in so long as they wanted to earn some quick bucks as every person they take down would earn them some brownie points with Allah SWT as well as monetary reward from the humus org.. it's really up for anyone to take arms. No training required.. so with your logic, it's a bit hard to distinguish between civilians and potential recruits, which most of us seem to find it understandable why they've (humus) taken up arms.. including young Palestinians who may have barely touched the age of 16. When Israelis pull out of Gaza to let the Palestinian self govern, they even dug up their death and not even one Israelis soldiers was in Gaza before the 7Oct attack. The Palestinian instead of building the infrastructure and to improve their economy strength, they spend money to build tunnels and rockets to shoot into Israel. This attack is a case in point why the Israelis are reluctant to return the surrounding land to the Palestinian. It proves again and again that the Palestinian do not want peace. This is the first time that I have heard an interview with Anwar Ibrahim. His ability to speak about sensitive topics with honesty, humility, and wisdom is a true breath of fresh air. When I compare the one-dimensional and often polarised positions pushed forward by many prominent leaders of the so-called 'developed world', it makes me wonder what the term 'developed' actually means. There seems to be very little evidence of developed or balanced thinking.

Happy for Malaysia to have a leader with a backbone and good standards. Our German politicians are just a shame and the word "double standards" describes the west very well.

The prime minister of Malaysia essentially reemphasized what the Guterres stated in the UN, this does not happened in a vacuum. End apartheid and occupation is a must. This did not start in 7th of October.

After hearing from the Malaysian prime minister, it feels like he's a man with practice of justice as he articulated both sides of argument and doesn't miss the balance. He also believes the exercise of coexistence, no matter how weak or strong any nation stands on the global front. Thanks, DW, for the amazing work to present the opinion of global leaders, which could help restore peace.
