    Thank you! I'm currently working on a "cleaning your own DPF (diesel particulate filter)" video. It's a long video. And I just picked up a beat up, old 1989 power boat. I hope to do a restoration video on in. It will probably take years. There are a lot of new skills I'll have to learn. But it'll be fun because I can describe things from a beginner's perspective.

    Thank you. I thought I'd share what I've learned about hydraulics the past few years. 10 years ago, I dreamed of building my own hydraulic tilt trailer, but had no idea where to start. I learned how to weld. I learned how to rebuild hydraulic cylinders. I learned how to repair power units. I learned how to fix motors. Although I didn't have to build the trailer myself, it all came together on this trailer.

I find old trailers are often better built with better materials than modern trailers, but they need a few design updates.

    I recently purchased a manual tilt trailer that doesn't have a dampener. I had thought about adding one to somewhat control the tilt speed, but adding a used hydraulic unit would make it much better. My first re-work on it will be the winch set up.The previous owner had removed the winch he had on it because it "burned up". There is nothing wrong with it or the controls, just has badly corroded cables, but the mounting bracket was a bent up piece of junk, and the winch is only 3500 lbs. I have a once used 5000 lbs winch in my shop, that I have mounted on a receiver hitch, so I can plug it into my truck if needed. Now L have the old bracket cut off, I need to build a new, stronger bracket and mount a receiver to it. I also need to do some brake work on the trailer before using it on the road.

Lately, they've got more metric sizes, too. I used to always have trouble with European stuff because of the metric sizes. Lately, they've had no problem matching those. They really should expand. I just wish they were open Saturday. Well, they'll come for an emergency call on Saturday, but it's a $150 fee. If the customer's willing to pay it, I'll call them in.

    Hello Justin. Mine basically has the deck on top of the frame, tied in together with a pin. It's probably not the best setup, as this thing was made in the 60's. I'll try to do an illustration below. The frame only goes as far back as the pivot point. The basic concept is, the deck has plates extending down on the right and left sides through which a very large pin is inserted through the frame and the plates. The cylinder ends just need to be attached with one end a few inches lower than the top end. I know this is not the same as a video. I'll try to make one when I get a chance. =========I===I========= I o I============== (front)

    Awsome! How did you side load over the fenders? Did you drive them up from the rear then physically move them in place? I have a pj 20 foot trailer looks a lot like yours but its considered a side load which means I can only side load at the front then load the rest from the back. I was thinking to weld on new heavy duty custom fenders and weld supports from the outer frame to underneath the fenders to support the fenders from collapsing. I need to add room for another ATV. Maybe you can do this if you have not already. Nice trailer thanks for sharing. Also where did you get those seals for that pump please?

  • @redneckoriental

    @redneckoriental

    2 жыл бұрын

    The seals are from a store called "O-Rings and Things" in Fontana, California. I don't know many stores like them. If you don't have a seal shop near you, look for a hydraulic shop. Yes, we drive the ATVs up the rear, then reposition them sideways. They're not very heavy. The largest one is a 400cc. Sometimes I park them head-first. When I do that, I can fit 2 of them side-by-side. The fenders are actually double-thick, welded to the deck frame at the ends and at the middle. I had bought wide fenders, cut them down the middle, stacked them and welded them together to make them extra thick. I can ride the ATVs on them with no problem. I did accidentally drive the front wheel of a Suzuki Samurai on a fender with no damage, but I don't think they would hold the weight of a truck. Someone had suggested I make them removeable. I plan to do that someday. This way, there would be better clearance for a forklift to load pallets.

    Good morning I noticed on your deck. It’s a wood tilt deck. How can you make the trailer lighter?

  • @redneckoriental

    @redneckoriental

    Ай бұрын

    I'm using "rough cut" lumber, not regular framing lumber. Rough cut is is thicker, so it's stronger. There's not much you can do to make a deck lighter. Lighter means weaker. Steel, aluminum and wood are about the same strength by weight. An aluminum deck will be lighter, but weaker. Also, steel and aluminum decks are more difficult and expensive to repair. If I see one of the planks split, I can use wood glue and wedges to squeeze the split together. If you don't abuse it, a wood deck should last 10 years or more.

    I like the removable idea as well. I picture something like a miniature tire carrier on a racecar trailer. There is a lot of dirt track cars around here and they all run the same basic trailer setup. Lights are a dandy idea and I saw someone had commented on a wash down hose. A rack might be a good spot for a water tank. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

    Hi. I have 2 gauge wire on winch connectors at the rear of all my trucks. I used to run the winch using the winch connectors to the truck batteries, but there have been times I screwed myself pulling heavy loads, draining the truck battery. The Optima yellow top battery I used was free as well. So, I figured may as well out a battery in the trailer. Besides, I didn't install a winch connector at the rear of the family SUV and this is the vehicle we use when using the trailer for recreational purposes.

    One question, and one suggestion. 1. Why you didn't connect the ball valve to the hydraulic hoses on the control box? It's shorter and simpler. I can't find any reason to put double lines for the same connection. 2. instal a solar panel and never worry about battery again.

  • @redneckoriental

    @redneckoriental

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dennis, 1. I wanted the ball valve to be at the control panel instead of at the power unit for convenience and safety. If there's weight on the front of the deck and I flip it to free tilt, I'd rather not have arms and legs near the deck in case it slams down. Also, I have a a vehicle loaded, the front of the vehicle covers access to the bin where the power unit is installed. I thought long and hard about it. I considered using a switch to unlock the holding valve on the power unit. But that wouldn't give me any variable control. Also, I'd have to keep the switch on to energize the solenoid if I wanted to leave it in free tilt. Running extra hose was the best solution. 2. A solar panel is good for float charging. I do connect one if I think I'm parking the trailer for months. But you need a faster way to charge when it's in actual use. Using the winch very quickly drains the battery. I once dragged a disabled skid steer onto the deck. That worked the winch at full load for 3 or 4 minutes. And the battery ran out. I had to run the truck engine and let the battery charge a while, 2 or 3 times actually. Imagine how long it would take to recharge the typical car battery (50Ah) using a solar panel. Even if you had a 12W panel, which would be too large to store anywhere in a tool bin, it would take 50 hours to charge that battery.
