Making the Elephant Bar and Deep Dish Plates - 2016 Arnold Strongman Classic

Спорт

Each year Rogue works with the organizers of the Arnold Strongman Classic to build custom implements that can test the pure strength of the strongest men on Earth. 2016 was no exception. This year, Rogue built a 10-foot-long, conventional style deadlift bar and a series of 45 lb. deep-dish plates machined from solid, 170 lb. slugs of steel. See it in use here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kE7b...

@@sumeets3155 Idiot, they test it with a 50 drop test to ensure that it'll withstand the force of the weight that'll be put on it. Not to mention, each competitor has a good 30 secs to get the lift, if they each try 2-3 times, the bar needs to survive the punishment. Not to mention, bad business to build a bar that only can withstand single digit lifts for an entire competition. Can't have the bar breaking in half while someone is trying to lift it and possibly get injured. Think before you speak, moron.

I just want to add my two cents to those asking that Rogue consider making the Arnold 45's commercially available, even if on a special you-order-'em-then we make-'em basis. A rough guesstimate is that it takes about 3 man-months to make 2 dozen of these plates. Selling or auctioning the plates after the contest would be one way for Rogue to recoup the cost of making these pieces of art. These will be as collectible as the Inch Dumbell or Spiderman #1!

Each plate takes multiple men over 12 hours to produce. Somewhere between 24-36 man hours. At 20/hour per, just the labor is over $500 per plate, cost of materials is roughly $50. Maybe more as the steel is not what they normally use. Now figure in the price of lost revenue. I.e. this same crew could produce many full sets of calibrated weights in the same amount of time. Your looking at 10k for a complete set of these.

@@ashtonw9931 You forgot machine time. A cnc mill of this size usually costs at least 200K if its a cheap one. The one rogue uses is probably not too expensive, because their machining tolerances are pretty big, but this is probably still a 300K machine. On top of that you also have the cost of consumables, so inserts and endmills.

@@obi-wankenobi9871 they're using a haas. Looks like a vf, probably around 75k-100k depending on the bells and whistles. It's not mori seiki, which are $500k upwards. Also, those machines are almost definitely used for more than just plates. And they definitely have more than one machine. They wouldn't be making any of these things if it was at an overall loss. Also, tbh, when you run a cnc mill, other than doing the setup and then your first trial run, you can do other things to keep busy, otherwise it'd be miserable, since watching coolant fly is like watching paint dry.

during the part of the video where they are dropping the bar over and over, they go to a slow mo shot. you can actually see the bar show a sign of weightlessness for a brief second, when the bar is being dropped the bar is bent in a downward angle as its dropped the bar falls but at the same time the flex of the bar rebounds causing the ends of the bar to rise there is a split second when the momentum of the weights rebounding up and the bar dropping down meet and the bar actually freezes in mid air. interesting concept and physics behind this. with they had like the slow mo guys there to do some crazy shots .

I was unfamiliar with this whole thing and knew of no manufacturer names but catching a glimpse of these striking plates made me do some research and brought me here. One rookie question, isn't a bendier bar easier to lift because it eases the initial part of the lift? I see that the final part of the lift seems to be the decisive, harder part, but the athlete will have more remaining energy if the initial part is made easier (you're not lifting the whole weight for the first 10 inches).

Seems awfully inefficient to make a 45lb plate for these guys out of a 190lb slug.....

Its ridiculous. Someone was buying my old plate set and was like, how close are they. I asked what he meant, and he said many plate sets can be up to 2 lbs different and mentioned rogue plates. I weighted my 45s and they were both 45.2, part of a really old CAP set. Seems like Rogue has people eating up their marketing bullshit.

"Shaw Classic"...makes more sense to me. :) The "Arnold Classic" should stick to bodybuilding. For Fitness...O'Hearn Classic. Women's Bikini--______...

Do these guys not know how to business? If it costs $1,000 to produce each plate then charge that. If it costs $50,000 to produce each plate then charge that. If it costs $340,000 to produce each plate then charge that. If it costs $60,000,000 to produce each plate then charge that. This is complicated?

I'm pretty sure they do, and you don't, idiot. Do you really think economics are that simple, and that the factory has unlimited resources? Do you think that the machine can make these time consuming plates along side normal plates that they actually get sales for? So ignorant that it's pathetic
