    I made a few of these potstands and they are really versatile (different potsizes, fuels, etc.) It should even work with an open fire - on the side. Using bicycle spokes should give it better stability over wire coat hangers. cool stuff! Cheers, chris

    @@dabberty Over the past couple of days I've been working out in the gray matter "drawing board" and some related doodles on scrap paper a compact, collapsable, and easily stored device which could serve as both a pot stand and a windbreak. Dictating the dimensions of what I presently have in mind is the "penny can stove" I use which rests on a tuna can lid measuring 3.25 inches (8.25 cm) in diameter. What I've been thinking of is a triangular stand fashioned from three panels of thin sheet metal. Each panel would measure ca. 7.5 inches (19.0 cm) wide by ca. 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) tall. Slots would be cut on two opposing long axis corners of the panel inset 0.25 inch (0.63 cm) and extend into the short axis surface of the panel 1.25 inches (3.17 cm). This slot would need to be widened slightly to accommodate the thickness of the panel which would be slid into it. The three panels would "notch" together to form a triangular stand which should both deflect wind and provide a very sturdy pot rest. A limited number of small air intake and fume vent holes, respectively, would be placed along the long axis portions of each panel. When disassembled, this would collapse to the thickness of the three constituent panels. I realize this would be heavier that the stand you have fashioned but obviously utility and weight are always a trade-off (I always try yo keep in mind that what weighs an ounce in the morning weighs a pound late in the day). My apologies for failing to provide a better prose description of this device which I invision completely surrounding my penny can stove in a triangular "box.." Those who use a smaller diameter stove (e.g., a Trangia which does not require a priming pan) could scale down the width of the panels they use and simultaneously reduce their weight. I look forward to trying to convert this mental template into a tangible reality in the near future.

    @@dabberty Since we last communicated, I came across the following video with a pot stand design which as regards assembly is effectively identical to what I was attempting to describe (great minds must be thinking alike): kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoWHptOMhZSxXbw.html I would note, however, that this design falls short of offering much (if any) utility as a windscreen which is why I envisioned a "solid" wall panel. I don't think that "one size fits all" as regards dimensions which is why I previously suggested that those who fashion this stand do some tinkering to take into account the height and basal diameter of their particular alcohol stove. Working out the "life sized" dimensions one prefers on some graph paper prior to actually making the stand would likely save time and frustration.

    Nice, thanks for the video.I will have this siphon stove soon and was looking into stand solutions, this one looks simple and light. I heard this stove is working better with "opened" type stand for the flamme than cross type, especially with smaller diameter pots. Is it stable enough when putting a pot full of 600mL of water? No risk of spilling incident or pot slipping with weight? Optimal height of the stand is 6,5cm then?

  • @dabberty

    @dabberty

    Hi, I've had no issues till this day with this setup being unstable, even with 1l on it. If you would want to be more secure, you can always make the length longer or use slightly thicker rods, but the 6.5cm height is indeed optimal for the toaks siphon.
