    Honestly it doesn't take much practice for an American to get used to grams. I'd imagine it's torture to go from base 10 to imperial though🤣 P.s. I still can't remember how many oz. In a gallon 🥴

    Good job Doc, I came up with an almost identical setup last year. The light weight is amazing, and I agree with you, solid fuel is often overlooked by the ultralight hiking community. Keep up the good work, we appreciate it!

    Another great video! I recently picked up a Sterno Inferno after watching your video. I removed the base to the stand and replaced the lid with a stainless steel 'universal' lid from survival resources. For a burner I use the Evernew titanium. So if your looking at extended use ( for sake of argument) using a 12 oz bottle of Heat (thats 12 uses of boiling 2 cups) and able to boil 2 cups in 2 minutes it seems that the slight difference in weight would be a decent trade off for the rapid boil time. BTW... thanks for the video showing the Sterno Inferno! I'm loving this setup!

    Thank you for sharing this video. I have been using Esbit fuel for almost 20 years for day hikes and multiple overnight hikes. I use 3/4 of a tab for three cups of water. I bring it to light boil which is hot enough for one cup of coffee and a freeze dried meal. The left over tab is cooled and put in a ziplock bag for the next meal. So roughly I use one and three quarters tabs for two meals. As far as time to boil I am not in that big of a hurry. And the smell doesn’t bother me. I keep the tabs in a container on the outside of my pack. Oh and I even bake with them. One tab will bake a muffin or a little thing of cornbread. With a simmer ring it will burn for about thirty minutes.

    I enjoy how many different type of stove setups you try. Tried an esbit stove once but really didn't care for the smell. Sticking to alcohol stove setups in the same weight range as your esbit.

    Great job with the vid!! With the slightly slower boil time one can get the stove lit , then go and set up tent, shake out the sleeping bag, come back and start the meal rehydrating while blowing up the sleep pad. #CampChores

    My main problem with the solid fuel tabs is the slow boil time. A soda can stove with alcohol is as light and costs less in the procurement and trail usage per boil.

  • @michaelcarter382

    @michaelcarter382

    3 жыл бұрын

    True, but the weight of the alcohol is much more. There is a spill risk also, which is why Ca. has banned them in parks. Also, Esbit tabs burn @ 1,400 degreed F. You can't get near that temp with alcohol, therefore a faster boil.

  • @joelrampersad1359

    @@michaelcarter382 Sorry, I meant the soda can stoves, which typically weigh less than 10 grams. Alcohol also usually boils 500 ml water in under 6 minutes, and the volume is inherently scalable to the specific requirements of your meal, with little wastage. Plus, denatured alcohol costs a few cents per ounce, and is easily stored in small plastic (apple) juice bottles.

    I went back to Esbit tabs for a recent 3 day section hike on the AT. Out of 6 boils, only 1 of them required a second tab to get a full rolling boil. My main issue with the Esbit tabs is the sticky tar-like residue that it leaves on the bottom of my pot. I can usually get most of it cleaned off using leaves and debris, but it's a hassle. I was also envious of my fellow hikers who would fire up their isobutane stoves and have a meal steeping before I even saw the first sign of steam from my pot. But, I do love the light weight and knowing exactly how much fuel I have.

    For years my go to cook kit is heavier then yours but not by much. It's the titanium Evernew Appalachian set at 5.7 ounces. Choice of three fuels , wood , alcohol or the solid fuel tabs. My primary choice is the alcohol.

    How easy is it to acquire those fuel pellets at every resupply point on a through-hike of the AT? I’m guessing you’d need two pellets per day.

    At altitude over 7k ft. (which is high here in Texas), takes my 1.25 tabs to boil 2 cups of h2o with a lid on the pot. So every time you want to cook or have hot coffee or tea, I'm looking at 1.25 tabs.. Also, almost every sporting goods/hunting/fishing/Walmart, etc. will have them.
