The ultimate compact and versatile cook kit

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

OK you can shave a little weight off this set up. But it's not about that, it's about the minimum amount of items and space required for cooking in the hills. This kit is chosen on quality that is a joy to use - not just weight war. Then I have recommended all sorts of addons you can pack to make your basic platform more versatile. The idea is when you have the foundations right, you can chop and change items to meet your needs on your next hike.

The problem with alcohol stoves is the weight of the fuel. They are fine for 1 day but beyond that, butane is lighter. The Trangia stove being brass is about the heaviest option in alcohol stoves, though it has a sealed lid, so you get to take a days worth of fuel without needing a separate fuel bottle or gas canister, so there is that. I have used alcohol stoves quite a lot & they all make the pots black. I made up a stove kit decades ago for kayaking trips, the pot stand fitted inside the pot & doubled as a wind shield. It was faster & more wind proof than any butane stove at the time & more wind proof than the Trangia one used today. That kit was bit heavy as the pot was steel but with a boat that wasn't an issue at all. I wasn't too concerned about using it for hiking at the time because I could just do a twig fire in the wind/stand, no need for any fuel or burner at all. There is no need to heat anything on day walks, so it's only overnight camps that require cooking & a twig fire is all that is needed really.

Thanks for the feedback, you talk a lot of sense. Have you tried bio ethanol? It burns really clean and without the offensive fumes. Most of the hills in the UK are bare of trees, and most national parks have fire bans - but I agree, in the right terrain you could cut out carrying the heat source and fuel.

@freddiecampbell a twig stove isn't legally a fire at all. What's a stove, beyond being combustible fuel in a safe container? Good luck persuading your average jobsworth busybody of these obvious truths and legal technicalities though 😂

Make yourself a burner out of pop/beer cans (plenty of tutorials on KZread) if you want lightweight… I do. I also dilute my meths by 10% water as this reduces sooting, my fuel goes 10% further (the purple dye causes the soot) and there’s no noticeable drop in performance. I wipe off any loose soot off with a handful of grass and keep my pots’ exteriors black as they absorb heat better, shiny pots reflect heat. Meths is more readily available than butane cartridges, which are also a lot more bulky and you have to dispose of them. In winter in temperatures approaching freezing or below, pressure drop in butane cartridges is dramatic meaning tiny flames. Butane stoves are also noisy which isn’t something I want if I’m stealth/wild camping. Meths burner performance also drops at low temperatures, so to allow for that, I always use my Trangia burner for those conditions because I can store the fuel in the burner ready for use, keep it inside my jacket so it’s at around my body temperature and will light as normal. These are the pros of a Trangia burner and why those, and their range of stoves, have stood the test of time. The burner is extremely strong, and treated with care will last a life time, mine’s 43 years old and still works as well as the day I bought it in a Mini Trangia stove for backpacking.

@@blackboardbloke Yeah, my comment was to the video, which shows a brass Trangia stove, the heaviest alcohol stove option one could possibly choose. Please consider the context of comments. Also, any more than about a days worth of Alcohol fuel, is heavier than a light weight butane setup. Fuel loss is exacerbated by evaporation as the stove cools down after it is extinguished & also from latent fuel that cannot be fully emptied from the burner into a sealed container. So, you many as well just go with butane which does not have these losses. Alcohol is just heavier than gas of the same calorific value. The comparative case on this is well documented & can be found online. Alcohol is just not the lightest weight fuel option for multi day hikes. It's not about the weight of the stove/burner it's the weight of the fuel & the longer the trip, the more butane canisters come out ahead, both in weight & packed volume for calorific value. However a twig fire within a wind shield pot stand is lighter than both as you don't need to carry any sort of fuel at all, just pick up twigs, which are plentiful in woodlands. Not great if it's wet though & it tends to soot on your pots a bit. So, in fact there are pros and cons to all options & people can choose whatever suits them best. Sure alcohol stoves are kind of nostalgic & attractive from a DIY perspective, just look at the practical reality of it all OK. For medical reasons, I am on a keto diet. I take everything precooked & sealed. I don't need to cook anything at all really. It's just nice to have a hot meal, hot coffee etc at the end of the day, not absolutely necessary for life though.

@@kenwebster5053 I get around fuel wastage by only using what I need to make a hot drink or stew etc. I measure it with a non-sharp syringe 💉 I use a titanium twig stove or a recycled can homemade stoves which also acts as wind shields. I also take a few firelighter blocks. I like making my own gear.

So can you easily adjust the simmer ring with the cross-shaped pot stand? You could get a Trangia Triangle and Trangia T-cup with lid, or buy the Trangia Micro set and you would have the burner, the stand, some wind protection, a 500 ml cup specifically designed to engage with the pot stand, and use of the simmer ring. Trangia kit is not perfect, but it is part of a fully integrated range designed to work together and stack together.

I have been happy with the camp pot I got a couple of years ago. It is 1L (I'm in Canada). It had the fold out handles with the silicon coating on them along with the top being a small pan too, also fold out silicon handle. I have used it alot and almost always had plenty of room left with the foods I cooked in it, so really it is bigger than I need most of the time.

That Trangia isn't actually a stove though, it's just a burner...A stove has to have a built in pot stand, which the Trangia doesn't. And you have missed out the weight of the fuel and fuel container...How much do they weigh? Adding up the weights you have given and without the weight of that super heavy Skillet, and your mesh pot storage bag, your cook kit weighs 273g. Mine is currently 305g. But then I have a taller Toaks Light 650ml pot and lid and inside it is a Primus 100g gas canister with 41g of gas still in it, a BRS 3000T stove (under 26g), a Forclaz folding spork (11g), a Clipper Mini lighter (10g), my Titanium windshield 21g, a lid for my Wildo Fold A cup (5g), a shortened plastic spoon for stirring (3g), and my DCF pot storage bag is 3.5g. To make a hot drink and a hot meal at the same time requires 500ml of boiling water...Good luck trying to boil that in that 500ml pot without boiling water spraying out the top and scalding you! That is why a 650ml pot is the perfect size pot for solo use.

Thanks Alf for such detailed contribution. I think in traditional terms the fuel is not included in the weight description - which is a bit of a sneak I know. I'll try a 650 ml pot and let you know. I don't think I will change my kit though, I know weight is a target that is part of the enjoyment of hiking outdoors, but I love the Trangia (it's brass, it has history, it is a classic bit of design, and it is a joy to look at, touch and to use). Enjoyment has to have a factor in your choice of kit, not just robotic analysis by weight.

But you can buy the Trangia Micro set, or the Trangia Mini set, or the burner and a Trangia Triangle. Any of these would give you an integrated cooking system with a stand. I have cooked complete meals from fresh on my Micro, although admittedly it is easier on the Mini.
