Making 18th Century Undergarments, Including a Corset (Stays)

In this video I'm gearing up for an 18th century costume by sewing the undergarments. I make a pair of stays (the predecessor to the corset), petticoat, chemise, and bum pad. I also give a pair of shoes a glowup but they play a minor part.

These all turned out wonderfully. And as a Bernadette Banner viewer as well, haha, i say you definitely get bonus points for spiral lacing!!

If you have enough sheet left from either the chemise/shift or the petticoat, make a lining for the stays. Linings hide a multitude of hot messes! (Trust me on this ….😂😂)

In my opinion, the flower is perfectly placed, any lower and it would be covered by the petticoat. Nice pastel bum pads too!

You have quickly become one of my favourite content creators on this platform! You’re providing interesting tutorials that are unique but still adjacent to many trends. Also your sleeve is incredible and it makes me SO happy to see vintage silhouettes on ‘modern’ bodies

I've never made stays before but one thing I've learned from watching other people struggling with making them is that it takes a looooong time & many mock ups to fit almost perfectly.

Oh yes. I was very ambitious to the point of delusion😆 I ended up making more mockups off camera, a total of 5-6 I think

Absolutely loved watching you put this together! And the fact that your tattoo sleeve matches your stays really scratches my brain in a good way. :)

The stays are great. for the underarm of the chemise, did you put in an underarm gusset? That would be an easy fix and also pretty historically accurate (I think). Also, historical accuracy is a modern affectation. Those ladies would have been all over sewing machines if they had been available.

It does have underarm gussets. I think maybe I'm just not used to the cut? It just sits differently than modern garments Can you imagine giving someone in the past a modern machine? It would blow their mind😆

Get yourself some grommeted lacing strips so you can wack those in on the back so you can lace it without having to make eyelets or grommets for your mock ups.

I can't stand those kinds of frills either, they never sit right! I am also a historical sewing enthusiast, but I've mostly made medieval tunics because they're the comfiest. 😅

    Spiral leaving?

  • @ladyanniebelle

Spiral lacing is where you anchor one end of your string to the top of your stays and use the other end to lace all the way down, making a spiral. Its the historically accurate way of lacing stays. As opposed to the modern way of cross lacing

@@nelliewerger5505 I see, I misunderstood. The mockup was cross laced but the final garment is spiral laced
