Finally Making *THOSE* 18th Century Stays | How to Make Simplicity 8162 18th Century Stays (Corset)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Want to learn how to make stays, the 18th-century version of a corset? If you want to achieve the conical, ice cream silhouette popular in the Georgian period, sick around!
Today I'm following the American Duchess for Simplicity 8162 stays pattern and FINALLY making the foundational structural garment that my 18th-century ensemble has been missing.

OMG finally someone explains how to figure out where to place the boning channels. I've easily watched 24+ hours worth of stays content over the past few months and no one has expanded on it beyond "stitch your boning channels." THANK YOU.

Thanks! The fear is soo real! But def give it a go. Other than the binding they're not too bad. I won't lie I wore the unbound stays around the house for a couple weeks before I got the courage to finish. But if you do make a cat ruff please let me see the end result 😻

Thank you, I too was "a feared!" I watched several times as I was working on mine. It turned out far better than I could have hoped AND after some tinkering with my chemise I discovered that I too could be a double scoop, lol (which is huge because I possess very small scoops otherwise 😅). Love watching, thanks for the excellent video!

Love the video! If you are open to a suggestion..... (if not, still great video!) You commented that you are flat-chested so don't have top part of the ice cream - this is in how you put on the stays. If you start lacing from the bottom, get to the underbust, snug it a touch, lean forward, scoop and lift the girls out of the stays, then finish lacing and tighten a bit more. You will enhance what nature gave you by a cup size or more.

Thanks so much! Your comment gave me a good laugh. I did play around with lacing and positioning the gals a bit. And I think I tried a method similar to what you mentioned that gave an impressive top-down view, but it wasn't much to write home about from the front 🤣 Still the closest I've ever come to having cleavage!

@@katencat They have less shaping/seaming than stays, so I think after these you'd be good! I know the Effigy Bodies are super comfy, although they aren't totally flat fronted, so it would depend on what you're looking for shape-wise. elizabethancostume.net also has a set of instructions for drafting a basic, non-tabbed pattern from your measurements. (I used to do Ren Faire so I possibly know too much about this...)

Hi Kate! I’m making the same stays right now- the instructions in step one say something about “machine basting 1/4 inch from side notched edges, front and back long edges as shown”. Did you not do this? Or if you did, is there any way you can explain it that makes it easier to understand than whatever the instructions are telling me to do?
