    This is one of the best overviews and discussions about Messiah that I have seen or read yet. I love how the show looks at many different perspectives, how characters are not black and white, and how so many people seem to project what they need to believe about the Messiah, onto al-Masih. I think they made many allusions to Jesus (Yeshua) in many cases: 1. In one scene, being detained and interrogated by Avriam, he was asked who he was. He answered “The Word.” 2. In that same interview he mentioned that God was his father. 3. In the scene in Washington, Al-Masih walks on water. 4. Being interrogated by the U.S. President, Al-Masih mentions a “thousand-year period of peace”. In Biblical scripture, Jesus (Yeshua) is predicted to return and reign on Earth for a thousand years... bringing true peace worldwide 🌍

    Great analysis! I think Payam is just a man. His incredible luck in surviving all these catastrophes is the only thing that makes me pause, but I think what's really fascinating are the people's reactions to someone like him. What's the most striking about the show is the human desire to believe in higher power and how it can be good for some, but end tragically for others. And another thing is that it pulls in the viewers and makes them wish for Payam to be a real messiah! But I like the warning against the dangerous and naive belief that one man can come from nowhere and solve all the world's problems. That's never happened with any of the historical messianic figures after all, for example Jesus didn't defeat Roman Empire. I hope the show will continue being smart and keeping us on our toes without going full on with miracles.

    If you ask the great Roman historian who is also the authority on Roman history - Edward gibbons, Christ did absolutely defeat the Roman Empire, either by co-opting it for its own purposes or via its gradual decline, either way Christianity consumed the Roman Empire . Also dismissing messiahs as simply a consequence of wishful thinking is too simplistic and ultimately a straw man argument, if it truly were dismissed so easily- then the concept wouldn’t of lasted, there’s a fundamental mystery at the heart of all messiahs that we are unable to explain via materialistic explanations, this is why messiahs have remained in many cultures, because they cannot be explained away not because they can. Herbert’s critique is ultimately naive and Marxist in spirit. He’s right about power attracting the corruptible though

    Smokiebad S: I never said that. I don’t believe atheism is healthy and neither is nihilism. Ever notice how we are surrounded by abrahamic religion yet void of spirituality and god seems absent? Yes Abrahamic religion has been a pillar of civilization for over a thousand years but it’s also set humanity back just as equally with the burning of libraries, texts, science, and centuries of bloody war and conflict. We are spiritually and culturally sick.. I was confirmed Lutheran and am surrounded by Baptist’s in the southern US. I’ve rarely seen Christianity make people good or spiritualized. I studied AP Islam in college. Many Islamic practices are primitive and tribal, and certainly don’t have a place in the future of humanity unless we all convert.. which is the actual main goal of Islam. Judaism is probably the worst with how tribal they are, especially US Jews. They have conglomerated power within media, banking, government, and powerful corporations. They help their own and could give a shit about the rest of us. How do these three tribes of Abraham do any good for us now? Tribes don’t work in a country of 300 million. Tribes don’t work in a world of 8 billion.

    I love the show, have watched it several times. I think what's interesting are the qualities that a charismatic leader has, that can be cultivated in other people. The positive qualities of being fully present, loving, calm, confident. Maybe we should all look at PG as someone who is teaching others how to be their own leaders. It made me think that he is an enlightened being due to the fact that he is able to read people so well...knowing their names and their past, their sins, their fears. He channels some energy and is able to tap into people's psyches. I found this to be fascinating and I loved how it was done in the show. I also noticed that he did not heal the people who were out for themselves, who came from a selfish place, not understanding the way God works. Sometimes your wishes are not always answered the way that you would like to. I believe he is an enlightened being, modeling for people how to be more enlightened themselves. Just my two cents, this is how I interpreted the show.

A philosophical, insightful and grim human study

    What would you have liked to have seen in the season's ending? When the plane crashed, it was a perfect setup for a one eyed hideous looking dajjal. They didn't go through with it though. Perhaps it can be said of the series that it does sit on the fence as to whether or not he is actually the dajjal, but as I say, the series was never really about that.

    I am not religious (raised Baptist) yet I found the ending redemptive and beautiful. The character Avi was so tormented with guilt and rage, I wanted him to seek and be given forgiveness. I loved the twist of having a shepherd child witness a miracle - a child we we will not be wisely believed because he’s been established as a boy who invents tales. Personally, I hope the series ends here. I want the ending we were given, which feels personal and intimate, and not the apocalyptic battle between good and evil that a second season would likely bring.

  • @secretsofdune

    Very true about the shepherd boy. Avi's story in the end was heartbreaking. If there is another season I would like to see him as a man seeking redemption and changing his life, perhaps even following Payam. If this is the only season, I'd be okay with that because sometimes I like stories that allow us to imagine the lives of characters in the future. There have been some conclusions made to some stories that I wish I hadn't seen or known. Part of the "magic" is making up your own continuation of a story.

    I'm hoping for a second season but I wouldn't want to see any apocalyptic battles. I've watched this series through twice and am half way through watching again. It's jam packed with references that people of different faiths can relate to, but I think most of all, it gives an modern insight into how people would relate to a person of Jesus's stature and intent if He were to be in the world in this day and age. Thanks to social media, it is very conceivable that His message and news of His actions would spread like wild fire, and the reactions by the powers that be to the Al Masih character in the series, equate to the reactions of the powerful and religious leadership 2000 plus years ago. The series then in another context, highlights Jesus's Message, which Muslims concur, was derived directly from God, as they revere Him as a Prophet of great standing and many Muslims believe, He will come again. I think it is very early days to make conclusive statements as to who the character Al Masih is really portraying (eg antichrist, Christ, false prophet or downright con man), but the last episode surely gives us the biggest clue that Al Masih is not just a con man....walking on water was another such hint and the healing of the shot Muslim boy.... Personally, as I said, I think the writers of the series want to make us think what it would be like if Jesus were to come in this day and age....and that is a very useful and worthwhile endeavor, but they might also be trying to paint a picture of what it would be like if He came again. One thing Al Masih says is, they will all know I have come (words to that effect) echoing how the Bible (and maybe the Koran?) describes the second coming, but minus the "coming down in the clouds". The media, social or otherwise, sees to the word spreading, and that is an interesting take the 'on everyone will know' claim. Probably if Al Masih is the antichrist is the biggest question because the Bible also speaks about him being capable of doing miracles that would deceive even the elect. However, viewing the interviews on KZread of the actor who plays Al Masih, Mehdi Dehbi, (and I am presuming he has full knowledge the direction the series is going to head), he does not appear to be worried about being very closely associated, even spiritually associated with the part...even claiming it was spiritually predestined that he should play it, so I don't think finally the notion of the series actually depicting the antichrist is going to hold any ground.

    I too have watched ot twice and am on my third watch. I found the last scene stillvery non-commital. For example, how much does the little boy understand about death. Is he a “reliable narrator” when he says the men were dead. Maybe they were stunned/unconscious etc. Maybe al-Masih resuscitated them with CPR and the boy has never seen that before. It is believable that they still survived the plane crash just by chance. My Dad, and three others and a dog all survived a small plane crash similar to this. I loved this show.

  • @sarahbrownsdon1672

    @sarahbrownsdon1672

    Aquamarine, I think the fact that his classmates know the boy in the last episode as a great teller of tall tales (plus he is just a kid) is certainly going to make his version of events unreliable and he is literally the only real witness (apart from Al Masih) that the other occupants of the plane were dead (if indeed they were....but it’s certainly implied by the boy’s initial comments re flies.....but did HE really know?). This is yet another ploy by the creators of the series to put a spanner in the works re really making a firm appraisal as to what is going on and who Al Masih really is. I can’t wait for the new series and this means the creators are at the very least, telling a story in the time honoured tradition, with us being led along a path, but never knowing exactly its ultimate destination. But I still consider the actor’s intense reaction to the part and his spiritual affinity to the role as being a very interesting, and perhaps the most revealing, insight.

    Mysticism is a big responsibility. We learn things that man is not supposed to know. Some can take that knowledge and misuse it for fame, some cannot tell anyone what we learn because it's so life-changing you have to be prepared. I'm being serious, there are things that I know that most people would rail against with great anger, things about humanity that are hard to accept but are there none the less.

    Liked and shared. I don't mind them using some supernatural or occult elements. Personally, I think that he is not the messiah but something akin to the adversary while not being quite it. Rather, he's ushering the way for the antiChrist. The show had me hooked from episode 1. The great care they took in everything from the dialect, religious and cultural beliefs/differences between faiths and the divisions within is impressive. I hope the same is shown in the upcoming adaptation of Herbert's masterpiece. Dune is for me one of the crown jewels of sci-fi. As a history buff, I love every aspect of it because it feels more like a historical narrative than a space opera. Also, the various historical, religious and folk influences behind it just shows how deep this is. Not to mention that while using some common tropes, it slowly deconstructs them, further exploring these messiah and savior movements.

    As a Muslim I appreciate your understanding. I didnt find it that offensive, except the part with madrasa... for us the prophets or characters like the Mahdi are important, and we do not like really to potray them, and it would even worse if they arent as the islamic narrations say. We do have narrations speaking about the look of Isa peace be upon him and we know who the Mahdi will be (Muhammed ibn Abdullah) and where he will be... . If in the end, the guy in the series comes out to be the dajjal, well, i couldnt care less, True he doesnt fit the criteria of the dajjal, but it wouldn't be the first time people are changing and distorting... in the end this series isnt made by a Muslim and it s fictional, so they can do what they want... For us muslims actually i think it would be interesting, if such a nice guy appeared and started to claim he is a prophet and later claims he is god, will follow him? I think this series can be eye opening, if we believe the figure is actually the dajjal, In Islam we believe the one who has memorised the frist 10 verses of Surah Al Kahf in the quran is protected from the fitnah (trial) of dajjal .... I am astonished how few of muslims actually have learnt it. Alhamdulillah I did. We believe he ll be coming out with first of all many jewish followers from Isfahan as the jews are still waiting for the 1st coming of the messiah and then many "weak" muslims (like shown in the series, very naive) and christians who will believe it is the second coming of Christ. Only good believer will be able to not be hypnotised by his brainwashing and lies, they will recognise him from his forehead, it will be writte Kafir on it, which mean disbeliever. He will have devils supporting coming with the body of your loved ones who passed away. Very hard to actually not believe in what he s saying.... On some point even women will follow him, in one way or the other he will brainwash them and they will want to follow him to the extent good believers will have to tie up their female relatives so they dont go to him. Dajjal will even kill a Muslim and bring him back to life, and still this believer wont buy it that he is god. Later The prophet Isa (whom you refer as Jesus) peace be upon him will be sent down by God , he will meet Mahdi in Damascus and pray , later Isa ﷺ will kill the Dajjal. End times will be big time. End times are big time.

    I agree, the Madrassa seemed cliché but it was used to describe indoctrination I guess in a way that the west would understand. I think they were loosely basing it off of all people's understanding of Messiah particularly Muslims ones but not actually representing it. They tried to work around that to cause as little controversy as possible I suppose. Thank you for watching and your thoughtful comment.

    Yeah I think it leans more toward him actually being a fake. I think he may be an agent or something. I think he knew the plane was being tracked and planted explosives instead of the plane being shot down (she assumed, but it was never confirmed they actually shot it down) and remember he was calm and strapped in his seatbelt so I think he knew how to take the expected landing without getting hurt.

    Actually 1:30 it's not just Muslims who believe this way, it's the same for Jews and for Christians. They immediately latch onto any such hope that there's a jesus figure in their lives or midst just because they want to believe in a positive afterlife which might already exist, however, if it does exist it will have been built by the dead and not a deity. Yes, there are likely whole worlds of people existing in an afterlife.

    How do you explain , stoping the hurricane and save the church in a critical moment , and how do you explain surviving and reviving death officers after the plane crash in the last episode. Why some people like to twist even the most evident and clear messages. 🤦‍♂️

  • @secretsofdune

    @secretsofdune

    I don't think it is twisting exactly. But there are explanations for things. The events and the way they are shot and presented are ambiguous in nature and this is intentional. There may be some logical explanations to them. It all depends on whether or not Payam has powers or not, or whether he has help from the outside.

    Thank you for this thoughtful review. This show was created by the same person who wrote The Book Thief Screen play. Both are carefully and thoughtfully written to explore the more subtle miracles of human character amidst the bigger backdrop of historical events that pull us one way or the other, or frighten us into actions that betray us. Occasionally someone stands forth in the face of danger. Petroni is fascinated by such characters. I want to see what he does with Jabril. I disagree with you about Jabril's speech. He was pressured to speak of a Palestinian homeland, but instead he speaks a message for all peoples, he uses the words he was given by Golshiri "If you seek truth, you may find comfort, but if you seek comfort..." Then his friend, the one who saved his life and read to him from the Little Prince, enters clad in an explosive vest. A young boy who traded his copy for the Little Prince, for the lure of fanaticism. We need more of this story. I say there were two great series this year, Messiah, and Neil Gaimen's Good Omens. We need more Petroni and we need more Gaimen.

    From the Prophet's Hadith, we know that prophet said to angel that he cannot read. Repeating those same words in this series was unnecessary; could and should have been avoided in my view, given the fact that the director was trying to create a "prophetic" charecter through his story telling. All in all it was a good watch.

    In the Dune series the Bene Gesserit admit that they invent or create religions, the Missionaria Protectiva through the Panolplia Prophetica, to help "guide" the masses, to mature humanity so it won't self destruct and call this their "grail". In this vein they tried to make the Kwisatz Haderach, utilizing a very tightly constructed and enacted breeding program, a super being and dared to believe they might control him thus avoiding the messy messiah complex which of course they failed to do... Please read the original 6 Dune novels to get a better understanding of what this implies as far as Messiahs and religious cults are concerned.
