If they did release a 6 hour cut I'd make a day of it to watch it 2 or 3 times and do that at least once a week,I'm pretty sure with the amount of talent in this movie that's it's gonna be good so yeah..but to watch a 4/6 hour version of any movie you'd have to really appreciate the author's work and anyone that's gonna buy the extended version obviously would be...and I I KNOW I'm not alone here there's gotta be ALOT of other Dune fans including the Host of this channel...Cheers Fremen!!!

It sounds great on paper, but editing can make or break a movie. A sequence can feel extremely long and dull with weak editing, or extremely dynamic and immersing with proper editing. Just releasing entire scenes one after another without care will make for a bad movie experience, imo. I prefer something that has been polished to give our senses a feast. If that can be done with a 6 hour cut, I'm all for it, but I think the 6 hour cut is just every single scene shot.

Most movies that are released as the director's cut start out with more of the material that had been shot and put it into a watchable movie, which means in some cases re-shooting certain scenes and editing or eliminating others, shooting new scenes and re-scoring and re-editing certain sections. There is rarely a complete 'director's cut" in the can, but it has to be created with what was previously shot with perhaps some new material.

  • @ninlazar

Solutions already exists, its just that Hollywood is oblivious to them. In Serbia and probably the whole south-east Europe and/or wider there is a trend or a policy that is as follows: A movie is created and then released in theaters, after certain amount of time (when cash stops coming in). Lets say a year from its theatrical release a new TV release is made, which is basically a theatrical release divided in 6 or 12 episodes in a length of 40 to 60 min. These mini series include all what has been filmed but has not made it into the movie plus additional takes which fill gaps in existing footage. In this way you get your original revenue from box office, plus review from TV release and then there is a passive revenue from Movie and TV rights for both products and other bundled products (Blu-ray editions).

@@wfd_wfd If you are interested in details about this i can provide you with an example of this model on a movie called Montevideo: Taste of a Dream which was made in 2010 and has grossed $2,192,931, which was then followed in 2012 with a series of a same name which had 27 episodes in 3 seasons (a lot of it was additionally shot in preparation for sequel movie). But for this i don't have profit details, i assume that it makes money even now with TV rights. And then there is a sequel movie "See You in Montevideo" which also grossed $2,273,204 and has been added to the above mentioned series as 3th season. This could be a very good business model for today streaming platform where you can always add more content, film premier then follow up series then sequel, then additional directors cut and bly-ray pack or criteria selection etc. The problem with todays film industry is that focus is only on short term gains (box office) which in todays digital environment is not viable at all and bigger, long term profit model must be made which would encompass all of the income sources. Movie theaters, digital streaming platforms, TV rights, Digital media etc.

I think that the industry is changing. After all these lockdowns people want MORE long-form content. Hopefully it becomes standard to stream longer cuts. Unfortunately we won't see Theatrical extended and blue ray extended cuts because of image quality and the mediums they require for storage. Blue ray disc's only have so many gigs of data they can hold. For things like Dolby Vision and Audio, they need certain 4k image and color data to display it correctly. Fans always want more. The "general" audience wants an hour and a half. Cinemas only want short movies, so they can play the movie a certain amount of times each day. A streaming audience now. They are at home. They want more, loner length stuff.

  • @heartshinemusic

I think a 3-hour cut could be quite possible, not as a director's cut but an Extended edition. Would be a smart move, copying the LOTR strategy. Often studio's want a film not longer than 2,5 hours, because then they can have more screenings on one day. The difference with Villeneuve's other movies is that Dune is a big franchise (starter), with many fans of the books. So they know they can make a lot of extra money from selling additional Blu-ray copies. (Also makes it easier to green light part 2) Especially if they are as well curated as the beloved LOTR extended editions. And Villeneuve might be pleased to also put out a slightly longer, more graphic version of the movie. Remember what LOTR did? They first released the theatrical version on dvd/Blu-ray, and half a year later came the Extended version. They sold a lot of copies to fans.

I think Nolan storyboards his movies meticulously in preproduction so he never has a whole lot of “extra” footage at the end of filming. What you see with his movies is pretty much what he shot. If Momoa is to be believed, that isn’t the case here. If Villenueve did shoot hours more footage, it could be best used to make extended cuts for home release to help make up for the lost revenue WB left by deciding to stream it same-day on HBO.

Having seen the movie - it released on Sept 15 here in Norway - I have no problems bowing to the genius adaption of the first part of the novel. The story stands on its own feet. It’s not deviating from the novel but omitting quite a lot. If an extended version were to be issued later on I’d gladly buy another ticket. And, if movie were to be extended into TV format, say, like The Expanse’s adaptation of one novel per season (more or less), I’ll subscribe to the streaming service as well. I loved the film.

Reading a book, to me, is a personal adventure curated by the author, but interpreted and fleshed out by the imagination. To people lacking imagination, films and shows are more satisfying. The mind no longer has to do any heavy lifting as the cast, crew and director have done all the work to interpret the words from the page. The financial success of Bay's F&F and Transformer franchises clearly show that the average movie-goer is not looking for any deeper meaning in their media, but simply an adrenaline rush and an easily digested, barely-there plot.

While books are indeed the most personal and imaginative source of entertainment, I don’t think that should degrade the value of movies. There really is no right or wrong answer, it’s just a matter of preference. Went to see the movie yesterday. All in all, very good movie: - Knockout visuals/cinematography (‚every frame a painting‘ has never been more true!), - great soundtrack (unlike other people, I like what Hans Zimmer did here), - Performances from actors ranged from good to great; also, Casting choices generally fit the characters well, - very well directed movie (where to put camera; how to stage dialogue and action scenes properly; …), - jawdropping sets and worldbuilding; movie feels properly epic, like it should. This is maybe the biggest strength of the film. So these are all very good things to like about the movie. However, very much like the theatrical cuts of the lord of the rings movies, I would have liked it to be 30 to 40 minutes longer. Things felt a bit unevenly paced at some places and the storytelling felt a bit dodgy at times. I myself, who knew the story before, had no problem following the film but some other family members, who didn‘t know about Dune before, had such issues. So: in case a longer cut exists, with more detailed scenes and storytelling, I sincerely hope they release it at some point!

Tarantino seems to be the only big director playing with modern formats. He filmed Hateful 8 on super wide 70mm, and then toured the print like an old road show. He also made it ready for modern movie theaters with a digital version. After that he recut the movie for a 4-part, extended release on Netflix. This might be the future for visionaries like Villenueve. Theater, steelbook, streaming. And if you are adapting a much-loved genre book like Dune: the more footage you have, the better.

Oh god... "The Hateful 8", that has got to be one of the most overrated and immensely self indulgent films i've ever seen. I love alot of Taratino's older films, but when you include those - when compared to the amount to which he's worshipped by film buffs on the internet - he's easily the most overrated director out there. "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is structurally very similar to "The Hateful 8", where pretty much nothing happens in the first 95% of the film and are laden with boring and extremely self-indulgent dialogue, and suddenly at the very end there's a shit ton of extremely graphic action at the conclusion. I feel like people say those two movies are brilliant, because it's Taratino - and we're supposed to find his movies brilliant or groundbreaking, (whether they deserve such praise or not). Seriously, if either of those two movies were directed by a director no one had heard of and you changed nothing, i guarantee that they wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the praise they received. "Inglorious Bastards" and "Pulp Fiction" are two of the greatest movies ever made, but i think all this praise and hype has gone to Tarantino's head, both of his last two films were pretty obviously made by somebody who is extremely self-satisfied. Denis is ten times the director Taratino is imo. Of course this is just my opinion though, i am well aware that there are people out there who genuinely loved both films, but for the life of me i can't understand why.

Not that I wasn't expecting it, but it still chafes me and saddens me... that is, the percentage of ppl who go out of their way to see a movie in theaters and can't keep their phones out of their hands for even a couple hours. Aside from it being a distraction to other viewers(not that anyone who does this gives a shit), I feel it says a lot about how even the best escapism still isn't enough for many these days. I'm only 31 myself, but I'd put money on the majority of them being under 25. Everything is just a stream of media/information now, whether it's a big screen or a small screen. Disengaging and escaping isn't a thing anymore; since information flow is so constant in the palm of our hands, there's no true separation/disengage now, unless you forget your phone at home. That's when it starts to itch, like an addiction. It really is like a soother for those that don't know life without it. No phone=foot tapping/restlessness/lack of focus. We just have to take Denis' word the length of this first half is the best of his vision version, but like Jason, who is used to Game of Thrones delving into the books level of creation having 10hrs per SEASON/BOOK, I TOTALLY AGREE. I am a huge fan of the Syfy 3 day attempts esp Children of Dune that STILL were cut but filled 6hrs of the DUNE story telling the books using more of the scenes to immerse you. I prefer Lynch DUNE FAN EDITS including cut scenes that made the movie less chaotic and more enjoyable to follow per the book.

I would, absolutely, 1000%, pay a premium price to see a FULL cut of Dune. Anything that was cut OTHER than shots the director intentionally cut at his own artistic discretion, put it back in. I don't care if it makes the movie 6 hours long. I would easily spend $200 or more for a special set if it had the theatrical release and the full cut on separate discs with a special book that comes with it with concept art and stuff, in a really nice, sturdy box with a high quality finish and exclusive cover art, etc. Then I could watch the theatrical version anytime I have the time for a long-ish movie. Then, once a year I would pick a weekend to watch the whole 6 hour cut either all in one afternoon or over two days in 3 hour chunks. It would be cool to show friends and family too and could be the kind of thing that I could invite people over for a "Dune marathon". Have pizza and nachos with homemade 6-layer taco dip and Tostito's and mix drinks for everyone and just watch Dune for 6 hours. I know of at least half a dozen people off the top of my head who would clear a day for that for sure, plus at least 2 of my 4 kids who love sci-fi movies. I've had weekends where my oldest daughter and I have started watching Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit on a Friday afternoon and spent all weekend powering through the whole saga non-stop. A 4-6 hour cut of Dune would be FLIPPIN' AMAZING!!! It would be the pride of my movie collection, hands down.

Wishful thinking, but 4 to 5 hrs x2 means a combined 8 to 10 hr "extended" version! This is the length Jodorowsky may have released had conditions faired better all those years ago. Villeneuve's effort in whichever form will include cutting-edge effects, current casting, faithful adaptations; a wonderful, enthusiastic and visionary if not outlandish or reportedly revolutionary directorial talent.

Tbh as much as I can respect Jodorowsky's chaotic hippie energy I can imagine a producer would feel more comfortable giving however many hundreds of millions of dollars to Villeneuve than to Jodorowsky. Villeneuve also managed to film the thing without like, making his 14 year old method act as Paul by doing martial arts 24/7.

The HBO release if a longer version would make it unavailable to many fans who can't afford the subscription or the significant one-time viewing fee. If it could go to DVD/DVD Blueray 4 hr version in a few months after theater release fans could save up for the purchase of it.

I would like to see an extended cut just like was done to the :Lord of the Rings" Each section of the Trilogy had like an hour and a half more conted added. May cut scenes were added back in and this way we can see much more of the storyline of the book. This needs to happen. Denis can easily do this. Not only would we have more of the movie, the sales of the extended cuts would make more money for the film! Do it Denis!!!

I would really expect that we will see a longer cut released on HBO Max similar to the Snyder cut of Justice League. It's kind of a no brainer for them especially since you can tell the theatrical cut was heavily edited for time. I think there are a lot of scenes in the movie, especially the stuff from the visions that felt like they were actually full fledged scenes that were shot and edited. Crossing my fingers for the 5 hour 5 part hbo release :)

Whether we'll ever get to see any extended version is probably dependent on financial success. If it's a flop, no resources will be expended on subsequent releases, but if it's a cash cow then we'll likely be treated to all manner of extended versions and directors cuts and so on. Much like LOTR - they are still releasing various versions of those films even now 20 years later.

The movie cut soooo much. I'm sure as a reader everyone felt that. Wish it was a series like you say. They could've had at least 2-3 episodes on Caladan alone for build up. And obviously more than 1 day on Arrakis before the betrayal. So much potential!!! Love this story though and movie was very well done for the shortness.

Perhaps they'll start throwing some of that material out before Dune's release. Just like they've done some shorts about Blade Runner 2049? Of what happen in between the movies? Since it's such a tent pole film, I don't see them not using all that amazing material...

  • @hooby_9066

I don't think the 4-6 hour cut exists yet - at least not a complete, finished one, with all the CGI and everything in it. There might be enough filmed material to create such a cut, there might be an unfinished rough-cut of that length, but I don't think they'd actually invest the money in completing that cut before they have plans to sell it. And there probably aren't going to be any such plans, before they know how well the original cut did at he box office. At a later point in time though, we might get an extended edition - like for example The Lord Of The Rings did. That extended edition even aired in theaters. Extended cuts and director cuts as later BluRay/DVD releases aren't unheard of either. If the movie is successful, there's a chance something like that might happen later. As for the TV-series format... I'm not convinced that would turn out great. There are certain caveats about serials, which I'm not sure I'd like to see happen to Dune. Something like a multi-part made-for-TV film might work, but a real series with planned seasons? Budget constraints, filler episodes, problems securing actors for shoots throughout the year, each year, having to settle for lesser known actors, not being able to shoot on location year-round, etc. - I personally feel that making multiple movies might be the better approach - and there's more than enough material to create a lot more movies after those first two.

As a writer myself (which I know isn't exactly the same thing as being a full-on filmmaker like Denis, but in the respect I'm about to outline the principle is the same), I know all too well that stitching together everything you wrote in your first draft and prepping it for your second draft means removing lots of things you thought were great a few weeks or months ago, but don't look nearly as good anymore. I even remember one of my favourite authors, China Miéville (who incidentally I recommend for other fans of the Dune books such as myself), saying how if he were to release the definitive version of his breakthrough novel Perdido Street Station, it would be, without a doubt, shorter, not longer. I personally love long books and movies, but there is something to be said for getting a lot done in less time. On top of that, it definitely doesn't look like Villeneuve has been having any of the kind of issues Alex Garland, the one cerebral SF filmmaker out there with a talent matching Villeneuve's if there ever was one, faced on films of his like Annihilation and Ex Machina where he basically said his experience was "I make a movie, I bring it to a distributor, and they say 'we don't want to distribute this'. I've had, in the past, huge battles, real screaming rows over the final cut." and then something like the whole Netflix controversy with Annihilation happened. It really looks like that hasn't happened with Dune, so I'm not worried. That being said, I would love to see that Jason Momoa jumping from space scene.

But when you're a fan of the world more than it as just a movie you often don't care about a "better" cut or movie, you just want longer in the World. For example, I only watch Lord of the Rings extended cut versions. Are they better movies? Idk. I never thought about it, but what I do know is they are longer. Haha

Never going to happen. Denis does not like director’s or extended cuts. His theatrical cuts are the best way to watch his movies. He said that if it didn’t make it through the post-processing, its for a good reason

The "best way to watch his movies" is subjective. Some people like the longer movie because they become more immersed in the Dune Universe. . Nobody is wrong, cause it's a personal opinion, this is why they release different versions /Theatrical/extended/driecters.

It's possible that it's going to be different for Dune. He's expressed his love for Dune, and famously it necessitates a longer form of media to convey the universe. I think Denis understands this, and he's definitely considering some kind of a complete cut as the final cut just split into two parts, but he probably also accepts that it may not be very marketable.

@@trumpsextratesticle8590 While there is some truth to your statement it doesn't always work like that when it comes to art. You wouldn't change the Mona Lisas hair to red because you fancy redheads more than brunettes for instance. The same can be said about a film that was carefully crafted to be what it is, making extended cuts may detract from the directors vision and even though some might prefer the extended cut it has stopped being what it was intended to be and it's essentially disrespecting the creators wishes/plan/vision. This of course is not true for every film or director, it really has to do with how the movie is crafted in the first place and what the directors vision for his work is.
