Quick note, the few old shots, when he’s sitting in the sand or working and speaking French, or the “terre des hommes” film, that’s from a tv show airing in the 1990s on French CBC (Radio-Canada). It was called “la course” (the race), where a whole generation of young kids (Villeneuve, but so many other who became filmmakers) went around the world with a camcorder to shoot films in a different location every week, sending back the tapes through mail (!!) with an editing plan for a film to be edited remotely by someone else and presented on national television and noted/commented by Quebec film critics and filmmakers. I was from 12 to 19-ish, it was my favorite show, I learned more about the state of the world and about cinema with this show than with any of my school courses...

originally, it was called “La Course autour du monde” (The Race around the World) 1976 - 1984, featuring young francophone directors with the participation of Radio-Canada, Antenne 2 (France) , RTL (Luxembourg) and TSR (Switzerland). It was spun off later by Radio-Canada as La course des Amériques, Amériques Afrique, Europe Asie and Course destination Monde (1988 - 1999)- Also one of my favourite programs throughout my 12 to 30 + years.

Secrets of Dune I saw the movie the other day. To say this is a dream project of Villeneuve's is an understatement. I saw in his Dune imagery and moments that made me think of not just Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 but also Prisoners (the corpse of a man hidden in a dark hiding place) and Enemy (the out-of-nowehre appearence of a creepy spider-like entity) and of course Denis' fascination with deserts. I hope that Part Two gets made and that we get to see the rest of what is a beautifully haunting and intimately epic culmination of Villeneuve's projects and creativity.

It still gets me how he says that ''he's being haunted by these images for 35 years'' I mean he's really mesmerized about it. Also Isaac's comments of the movie being ''nightmarish and brutalist'' gives me a nerve that its going to have a sick imagery and will have something in its core that will blow our minds. PD: I love how DV visualizes a pretty grounded ''future'' without flashy design sets and costumes, idk makes me fell that it will have an eery component in the dramatization and visual. Part of the reason for why Frank Herbert evoked such iconic imagery is not just in the peoples, themes, topics, and world he wrote about - its HOW he wrote about it. I was worried at first about some of the casting, specially Momoa as Duncan, he would be no problem on the first movies, where he is basically an action hero; but if the movie is a huge success, and they want to adapt the rest of the books, Duncan will need a really good dramatic actor. Anyways, seeing HOW MUCH passion Villeneuve is putting into this, and his enormous talent in Arrival and Blade Runner, I really confident that this man will deliver the best movie of the last 10 years.

I am also glad to hear that he won't try to accomplish the telling of DUNE in just one film. It's always been a belief of mine that, no matter what the source, any films that are based on a book should be told over multiple parts. There is just too much information in books to simplify to one movie. There aren't many films that excite me as much as what I anticipate in Villeneuve's DUNE. I think it will be an amazing event.

I have waited, and waited, and waited for THIS rendering of Herbert's book, a rendering which matches my fascination with the great original material. If you think about it, that was Frank Herbert's position as well, if you extrapolate from his writing about translations that can never match the original because they lack the cultural context of the language - and movies' visual language definitely comes with context of its own that differs from the written language of novels.

The thing that makes me most hopeful for the quality of this movie is the complete lack of pre-merchandising and corporate promotion. No sensational shots of the sandworms, no "bare-knuckle thrill ride!!!" press blurbs. Just a few articles and carefully-monitored images. Just enough mystery to keep fans' mouths watering for more (me included). Maybe it's because Dune isn't a very well-known novel/series among Millenials, at least not mainstream, and the studio is hedging bets that it'll be a critically-acclaimed, but ultimately non-billion-dollar popcorn pablum release. This isn't like JJ's Star Wars...you'll need to bring your brain to this one, and I'm totally okay with that. Can't wait.

step by step I am more confident and I do agree with Denis's speech. First a single movie is not enough to see each world in details. Second, the film must be an interpretation of Denis's of the Frank Herbert's novel thus it has to be slightly different from the book this is what I expect from him. As we know, each fan has his own interpretation. Awaiting the first trailer !!

Denis Villeneuve is undoubtedly one of the best directors of his generation and is gifted with clarity of vision and intent that allows him to be brave enough to confront himself with the significative legacy of other huge artists, writers and directors alike. It is not common and it is remarkable. I love David Lynch and when his Dune came out I happened to watch it in the theatre...but I was 8 and didn't know the first thing about what I was going to see or even Lynch himself. I ended up in that cinema with my parents by mere chance, following another family with an older son. I was struck and unsettled to say the least, it was like i just had a nightmare, but a fascinating one. Although I watched it in its entirety only once again later, its incredible atmosphere stayed in my mind untouched and it's the thing that makes me love that movie. I am now 44 and I am about to read Dune for the first time in my life (I know! I bought myself a first edition - in italian, 1973 - for the occasion :) ), preparing myself a bit better in order to watch and enjoy Villeneuve's creation as much as I can. What do I expect from him? I already know he will do a good if not great job, but I really hope to find an atmosphere as new as original and strong in his film as Lynch was able to imbue his work with. I don't just want to watch a very well crafted, terrific movie, I would love a...new paradigm! I love that Herbert liked Lynch's rendition because i think he knew Lynch was sincere and gave it everything he could and nailed some elements that were essential to his book and to his writing. So I know it'll be completely different this time around, of course, as the 'auteur' is very different, the means are different, but I hope it's going to be a film able to leave a mark (in the collective memory and imagination) in an unprecedented way as well. Otherwise I'll consider it a lost occasion.

It would be interesting to watch his performance as Hayt if we ever get to see the sequels, that cold philosophical ghola would be a real challenge.

Although the fremen are diverse because they're humans just like any other human group in Dune most of the fremen are described as Olive pale skin though not so much black or brown. I know it's kind of hard to imagine very light skinned people in the desert in the special real life but the thing is they did and do exist in real life in massive numbers. The Persians for example we're huge group of Middle Eastern desert dwellers that were lighter skin than your typical Greek or Macedonian who are Europeans. Even today the syrians and Iranians have very light skinned to a point where when they moved to America and they simulate you cannot tell them apart from a regular white American. Then you have another desert group people who most of them have light skin call the Berbers who inherits most of North Africa including the African desert. Berbers of North Africa & African desert: mathildasanthropologyblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/moroccan-moors.jpg culturetravelsite.com/podcast/who-are-the-berbers-their-origins/ www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/algerian-berbers-celebrate-the-yennayer-new-year-in-ath-news-photo/904185034 I'm surprised he's ignoring those descriptions if he's going by the book.

Some people see what they want to see unfortunately. It was obvious when in the video above, Villaneuve mentions the cover and says there was a black face with blue eyes, then you see the cover and clearly see how he is blinded by something because it very clearly is not black. Anyway, if you're worried about it, just remember that a 'white guy' (Muad'dib) becomes the 'savior' to these 'brown people', so I doubt white people will have much to complain about here

@@kardsufur2966 I'm not surprised but it's also a French cover and I don't know where is with the French at least a liberal ones in big cities they have a fascination with black people. They're just like anybody else they're human beings just like anybody else I don't know what is with the fascination is with Hollywood & the French with that? No it's just he ignored it or it seems like he ignored the description or seem to ignore the description of the Fremens, it sem to be important for Frank Herbert I guess since he put more description about them than other groups of people in Dune. I'm not saying there isn't any brown or black Fremen of course a couple of them are but the bulk of them is what I said they look like Persians and Berbers. My problem is they do this with everything, to a point where they get a historical movie or show even in Britain where they had ancient Greek Achilles and Zeus as Black men. Like WTF! It doesn't make any sense whatsoever especially the fact that how the Greeks describe Zeus and achilles which is completely opposite this Greeks described Achilles as white skin as sand with gold hair & blue eyes as the sky. They even had Joan of Arc as a black woman! They don't just do it with fiction they do with historical figures too. It's just really annoying, don't get me wrong I'll be just as pissed if they did a remake of Matrix and then they replace Morpheus with an Asian woman! They'll get my gears really grinding. I noticed some people doesn't seem very important but we make a story a lot of this is pretty important especially making a believable story or a serious one. Know what I mean by that it's like it just certain things wouldn't make sense for example you wouldn't see all Japan who is a leader of the Italian mafia as a black man or an Asian dude you wouldn't see Shaka Zulu being played as a blonde guy or a Mexican those things wouldn't make sense well it's the same thing with fiction but the difference is the author that created the world building in fiction so everything can fall in place together.

The guy just pulled Lawrence of Arabia that's an extremely important role. Like Lawrence of Arabia and not very many people know about him during World War 1 but did some crazy stuff but it's because the story is not about him. Sure you park in a way with replacing ethnicity wise fine but gender swap on that? @@kardsufur2966 on the book it does say he has blonde hair, more pacifically dirty blonde hair. Basically when it says he has Sandy hair it's basically kind of like a dirty blonde. Now depends on the Fremen there are darker Framing and they are black Fremen as well but the bulk of them are not that way though. Most Fremen resemble Persians, Turks, and Berbers who in the real world most are very very very light skin and desert people especially the Persians such as Iranians and Syrians for example. And I think the Persians are that way is because they really cover themselves up and they did travel the desert a lot during night time for what I understand just like most of the Fremen do in the novel. But yeah the Fremen are supposed to resemble all of those cultures including Arabs, not just Arabs that's what people misunderstand. In the Dune Universe it does indicate all factions do have minorities I mean that's a given. Example not all Harkonnens are going to be red hair, you going to have some that are blonde you can have some little black hair going to have some just resemble black Africans or Asians; the same with thing with every faction they all have different groups of people but the bulk of them they all have a majority ethnic group kind of like Nations today.

As an avid reader of anything that was written by F Herbert or his son as a prequel, follow up or in anyway connected to Dune, I can tell that I could see this day coming, when someone will take this book to heart and do a proper job of it, it's one of the hardest books ever to put on the big screen, hence all the ones that tried have failed in one way or another, the short David Lynch movie is a great attempt in my view (I know he hates it, don't know why) but it's too short to even scratch the surface of the complex universe that's so skillfully depicted in Dune, not even going as far as the follow ups ..... in my view God emperor of dune being the most complex and beautiful but in the same way the hardest to actually visualize successfully. Fact is they are running out of ideas for new movies, and if it means digging in the library to find ideas, who am I to object ? If they put half the effort in this that the film-makers put in the Lord of the Rings, then they might just get something really really impressive out of it, but I would say that this is something that can surpass any fiction or science fiction movie that has been made to the day, if done right and not shy of investing and going the length.
