DP/30: Sicario, Denis Villeneuve

Denis Villeneuve burst into the international film world with his Oscar nominated Incendies in 2010. Since then, he has delivered Prisoners, Enemy, and now Sicario, with the sequel to Blade Runner due to shoot in Summer 2016. It's been a remarkable and intense run. The filmmaker spoke to David Poland about Sicario, the already heavy prep on Blade Runner, and more.
Shot in Los Angeles, November 2015

Denis is the best director of his generation. Period. I know you see comments like this all the time, but I find it hard to name a more versatile director working today. Although sci-fi is his bread and butter, Denis has made excellent films from multiple genres. This is a subjective claim, but I genuinely think none of his films are bad; it’s merely a matter of which is better than the other (and even that is difficult to determine). The fact that he made a sequel to Blade Runner - a sequel that I think is monumentally better than the original - is a testament to his skill as a filmmaker

+Matt B Drawings ALL TRUE ...but you should blame the SCREENWRITER for all this, not Villeneuve. In fact, it's a tribute to Villeneuve's talent that he's able to turn awful material like SICARIO and PRISONERS (a script that's basically like a bad episode of CRIMINAL MINDS) and turn it into a visually arresting edge-of-your-seat thriller. Can't wait to see him work his magic on a GOOD script for a change (like the upcoming BLADE RUNNER sequel).
