I’ve had the 9” mago Italian stiletto otf for a year now and I carry it in my backpack and occasionally my pocket almost every day. The 9” comes with a clip which you definitely need for a knife that big if it’s gonna be in your pocket. You’re totally right about it being impractical but I carry it anyway because it is just so much fun to open and close and look at. I get comments on it all the time and it’s an amazing conversation piece. Say what you will about the quality but it is just a big hefty industrial feeling knife and I haven’t had it misfire or break once. My only complaint is the styling faux “locking mechanism” at the front is a little sharp and irritating. I wish they made it go the depth of the handle. Overall, it’s a mean, intimidating and absolutely fun knife to own and I think it was definitely worth the money. Grindworks also has a military discount fyi.

I've got the same Mago in white, only it's an Italian made. It's nothing compared to the American made knives out there, but it does have that charm that you described.

LOL!! Great review. I personally had no idea they were called MAGO's. Thanks! You've got it spot-on, it's impractical and obnoxious, but still a fun OTF to have in your collection :) You can get rid of that spring reverb with some heavy oil lube or grease on the spring. We carry these in a handful of finishes, but I really wish I had stocked up more on the red or black G10 handle version. Those are nice and grippy.

I may be wrong but the way I've been told back from the 70s is that a switchblade fires out the side a stiletto fires out the top. As I said I may be wrong but it is one way that makes sence of the two differences ?

Hi Scott, I grew up believing the same! Only as an adult collector did I learn that Stiletto is a style of knife, that is most frequently OTS out the side opening (think West Side Story). However in my recent research I did find that some Stiletto style knives were in fact OTF. I believe a single action OTF. These knives are extremely rare and valuable if you come across one.

OTF knives are not designed to do that. They will go off it’s track it there is too much in front of it. That said, it would draw blood (ask my finger how I know)

Damn dude! I just bought one. It’s waiting on me to get back to the house 😂 Now it looks like junk! Where can I shop for a good otf that’s around 100-150? Does one exist? It’s hard as hell shopping for these LOL. You’d think the market would be flooded with otf’s from knife companies. There’d be a huge market.

I have one in white pearloid plastic. . .Nice. . . but the top bolster guards ( ears ) are not correct. . .Yours ( and mine ) are level, one bends up and one bends down. . .If you look at a picklock, the ears are not level, one is higher than the other. the high one bends down, the low one bends up. so the guard ends ( ears ) are even level at the outermost ends. Sadly, the very cool Leverletto has the same art design error as this OTF. . . .Someone should make alternate upper bolsters to replace them . . perhaps a Maltese guard pattern. . .wish I could post a photo here.

Italian Stiletto was only OTF and not out the side. It was made to be out the side to be legal to sell in the US. This happened before the 50s. A true Stiletto would force your hand back when operating into something it can't peirce. All otf nowadays are weak. 😂
