MACKINTOSH HUT: All you need to know! Huts of New Zealand

Mackintosh Hut is a standard 8-bunk hut on the Mackintosh plateau within the Kaweka Forest Park. Its a really tidy hut with some great history, located in a nice area on the edge of a clearing. The surrounding area is made up of many different forest types including regenerating native kanuka, old native beech, old radiata pines and wilding contorta pines, which all make for an interesting walk in from the carpark. Its best accessed from the Mackintosh carpark, but can also be accessed from the Lakes carpark, Makahu saddle, Lotkow road and Lawrence road. The hut is popular with hunters and trampers alike, and can be stayed in for a night as part of the Mackintosh loop track, which I go over in the video. There were plenty of possums and native birds around as well, and I even heard some sika deer.

Cheers for that. Shutes will be a goody for sure. Lots of history and a tough slog back out. Don't think I'll be getting my car up comet road so I think I'll go with a friend in a 4x4

Hey mate, do you reckon a motorhome would be ok getting to the car park? If not do you have any other recommendations for huts around this area that would be accessible for me. Thanks

Hey mate, yeah the mackintosh and lakes carparks would be easy for a motorhome to get to. But I wouldn't recommend the other kaweka carparks up makahu road and whittle road. Cheers

Hi, Just a question regarding the track, I was over there on the weekend and went down the track from the car park that crosses over the tutaekuri river with the the hand rail on my right hand side, after crossing over I followed the track for about 200 metres and came across the scree slope, it looks like damage from cyclone Gabriell as the the track just drops away or was it always like this?

Hey mate, definitely sounds like damage from the cyclone but that scree section has always been on the move

@@LostKiwi It looked really steep and I wasn’t keen to cross as I had a heavy pack and rifle , so I went back to the car park up the top which is a quite a decent climb and went home, I’ll have a go from the lakes car park in a few weeks, Thanks for the reply.

@@gdog1443 no worries, I might head there myself soon and check it out. Haven't been tramping since before the cyclone so it's about time. It's good that little bridge is still there

@@LostKiwi quite a lot of damage on the Napier Taihape road but it’s passable, Don’t worry about the resident only and road close signs, There was plenty of cars at the lakes car park on Saturday

Lovely video of Kaweka Forest Park. Hmmm, the woodburner is not really suitable for cooking at all. They are intended only for heating the hut. So you should probably stop saying that. Someone might leave their stove at home in reliance on your video. Any way, I still like your video. So thanks for sharing your tramp.
