I was first on scene to a fatal crash this year up there. In my opinion, Driver fatigue from having to deal with sub par road surface and the road surface in general making the drive more sketchy than it has to be is a leading cause in these crashes. Funny how it's on the contractors if the road surface fails after a repair! Doesn't bloody matter who's at fault fix the road properly. Lives matter.
There's a difference between "intentions", and actively doing. One life lost is one too many!😓
It is fortunate that the speed cams and the police presence will increase the road surface quality 😂😂😂😂
I think our roads in general aren't good enough and people in small cars, vans spend and try to pass when they're overloaded and under powered is a big problem.
Not sure how revenue gathering with John Banks introduced unmarked speed cameras is keeping us safe. Can you try and explain that again.
I live on s h 5 and there's nothing wrong with the road its all DRIVER ERROR
I have travelled over this road many times since the 90s. This road is in bad shape I will admit. The biggest problem drivers that cannot drive. You either get the ones that do 80 kmh an hour that have a line of traffic behind them and the lazy arse cops do nothing. Or you get the ones doing 110 kmh plus and are impatient and over take because the slow drivers don't want to pull over and cops don't want to stop. I will also be interested on how much weather has to do with these crashes and how well people are prepared for driving during the colder months.

Along with shit NZ roads in general, I couldn`t agree more with you. I experience this ALL the time these days with slow drivers hugging the center-line and not at all concerned there are 15 to 20 vehicles behind them. Ignorance is not bliss..!
I vote for state highway 2 between Takapau & Dannevirke.
Yup more over taking lanes and better rest stops
Problem in NZ in general is the majority of drivers/riders don't have the knowledge and skills to drive competently. Everything else is to blame.
As per usual the driving has nothing to do with it,yeah right
