CENTRAL WHIRINAKI HUT: All you need to know! Huts of New Zealand
Central Whirinaki Hut is the gateway to Whirinaki te pua-a-tane conservation park and all it has to offer. From the river road carpark south of Minginui the 17km long track follows the Whirinaki river upstream, passing by a number of track junctions and other interesting things to see. After 4-6 hours you'll reach the serviced 25 bunk hut on the edge of a large clearing next to the river. Its the most popular hut in the forest park and has everything it needs to make you feel comfortable after long day of tramping. The ancient podocarp forest is spectacular and full of bird life. You'll also come across a few Whio (blue duck) pairs along the river, which are some of New Zealand's rarest and most endangered birds. Overall Central Whirinaki Hut is functional, spacious and popular, and is definitely worth a visit.

Brings back some memories when I was Hut Ranger there back in 1999/2000 its been extended since then though and our Rangers quarters was a porta cabin that was flown in. Can tell you some stories. Git kicked out the hut one night so a conservators meeting could be held with Conservation Minister at the time but the hoard of food they left made up for that. Its fantastic place though come a long way from back then. The track work we did back then was incredible.

Wow that's awesome, thanks for sharing. I imagine some great times have been had at the hut. I hope I got all the details right, it was difficult to find information on the history of the hut.

On that note, do you know about the history of upper whirinaki hut? That's the next video and I'm not too sure when it was built or upgraded.

@@LostKiwi not sure when it was built it was in a sad state while I was there. So must done the work in last 20 years.

I spent a night in the old hut when I was a teenager, we came in from the old Pukeroa Hut on the edge of the pines. It was a relatively short track and I see it's still on the topo map, is it still usable?

Very cool, I don't remember seeing the turnoff when I walked past so it's probably not so good anymore.

@@LostKiwi I heard it suffered from a lot of flattened manuka in a severe snowstorm some years back and became impassable. I wonder if it ever got cleared. It was a relatively quick trip to Central and there was always a chance of a deer.
Aww shit new HUT! Also an update: should be over there to start my new job in May, I’m bringing my A7C and FX3 cameras so you gotta let me shoot all your b roll!
