POWELL HUT: All you need to know! Huts of New Zealand

Powell Hut is the most popular hut in the Tararua Ranges. Built in 2019 it is the 4th hut to sit in it's place below the Mt Holdsworth summit, and it has absolutely spectacular views over the Wairarapa region. Starting from the Mt Holdsworth carpark, the track to the hut takes about 4 hours and climbs a huge 1200 metres. The tracks are in excellent condition, and you'll pass by a number of features on the way, including Holdsworth lodge, rocky lookout and mountain house shelter. Powell hut is extremely modern, with 32 bunks, a huge deck and double glazed windows. It also has lots of safety features like fire exits and smoke alarms, and even the luxury of electric lights powered by a solar panel. Located above the tree line, the hut bears the brunt of harsh alpine conditions like strong winds, rain and snow, which the Tararua Ranges are notorious for 200 days of the year. Make sure you come prepared with warms clothes and safety gear, as the weather can be extremely changeable and unpredictable. Powell hut requires a booking at all times of the year, and beds sell out fast so it pays to book your trip well in advance. It's one of the best huts in the country, you're bound to have an incredible time.

that should be "when you go 'tramping' around NZ. We do have tramping clubs not hiking clubs. Should have seen the track before they made it easier for tourist.

Well done. There are lots of stories about the first hut being hunted by a deer culler and his dog.

We did Powell Hit and return in 7 hrs. The chrissie meal of lobster, paua , prawns, venison and wild pig was the incentive to get back down by 6pm. Havent been able to get back with my ex doc deer hunter kiwi partner. Damn this covid.
