Te Araroa 15: Tararua Range

DAYS 46-47: Mangahao Road to Parawai Lodge
My birthday on the Te Araroa had everything from rain and mud to mountains and sun but it may have come at the price of my partner.

You are one tough hiker. I admire your ability to keep a positive attitude while you put fresh clean socks into wet shoes. Well done, sir.

I agree. Danny has a great spirit. He’s a great tramper?. I was following another hiker this year but she spent her time complaining and moaning, I had to unsuscribe...

Another great video thank you. There is a great hike in the South island that could be quite similar (in term of altitude hiking) and is amazing if the weather is good. It’s just a tiny tiny detour from Te Araroa (it can even be considered as an alternative route for one day) but it is worth it? It’s the Angelus hut (1650m) trail in Nelson Lakes. The view is amazing and there is a campsite next to the DOC hut. One of the best hikes I had two years ago. Take care mate

TA walkers can choose to do that route if they want to deviate from the trail. It will connect at Blue Lake hut so you’d skip the Travers Saddle. The TA skips the Lake Angelus route because it’s so popular and the hut has to be booked ahead of time

Hey mate happy birthday and please don't take this the wrong way but you are nuts being up on Mt Crawford in that weather. Please take care with the weather in the mountains.

Thanks! It was a crazy time up there but I wanted to beat the even worse weather that came after I got out of the mountains! Quite exhilarating!

I'm doing some research on this trail. Can you say a few words about how and when you purchased a Hut Pass from the D.O.C.?

Happy Birthday :D I was just thinking about doing Te Araroa the other day and obviously Big Brother Google pushed your video in my recommended feed :) Anyway will be paying close attention to your journey, I need some time to think so thought why not hike the length of the country :) Now that you are nearing Wellington what would you say your costs for the North Island were? All the best for the weather, be sure to have some good food and coffee in Welly.

I’m not sure the costs yet. But the North Island is expensive because there are a lot of holiday parks and cities and towns you’re forced to stay in. There aren’t all the free places to camp because of how urban it is or private farmlands. But the trail is fun. The South Island is definitely better! Tougher but so beautiful!

@@astraylife South would definitely be a lot easier to find places to camp for free. I just watched a video of someone who did it with a pack that weighed around 7 kg but I suppose he would have had to have pretty good weather or didn't do much of the Alpine tramps. I have done some several day tramps but nothing as long term so I am paying close attention. I suppose it is lucky you had someone with you to motivate you. Did you come by others doing the TA?
