SUNRISE HUT: All you need to know! Huts of New Zealand

Sunrise Hut is the destination of the most popular day walk in the Ruahine Forest Park. Its an easy 2.5 hour hike from the carpark on North Block Road, on a very well maintained track that climbs about 700 metres through native beech forest. The 22 bunk hut has almost all the amenities you could think of, and amazing views over Hawke's Bay especially at sunrise. Its a very popular hut on weekends and holidays especially during summer, so check the DOC website for booking information and prices.

"Huts of New Zealand" is a new video series I'm creating, in which I travel to backcountry huts all around NZ to record, review and rate my experiences to give you a better idea of what to expect when you go hiking around our beautiful country.

A couple extra points I forgot to mention! -There is good cell phone service at the hut, the carpark and most of the track. -Remember to bring your own toilet paper!

Did that Track in 84 when the hut was still pretty much brand new . Did alot of Trekking in the Kawekas Ruahenes Tararua Ranges as i kinda work for the dole scheme back in the early 80s bushcraft is what i chose for my work for the dole thing. So we learnt all about bush survival from a government funded work scheme in conjunction with the Ymca Hastings to keep us teenagers busy since jobs in the area were mainly seasonal.

do you know the rules bout pitching a tent around doc huts like if theres no room inside

Generally it's acceptable if it's a smaller hut and there's room outside, but if the hut has been booked out online or if it's a great walk hut then you won't be allowed to camp outside it.
