The Ontos. What a cool looking weapons system. I would imagine that when opposing soldiers occupying a bunker or some other such position saw one of these things roll up, they knew they were about to get smacked. Thank you, Sofi, for another fine video.
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
Sofi , been out of the loop for a bit and miss a few . The 113 I spent alot time around and sometimes in . 113s , M163A1s, M577 Commo tracks and TOW 113s...Overseas and they were quick . Not that well Armored in my humble opinion. Fuel tank mounted inside on the left ...ol RPG could cause bad trouble. But I love the track and spent many hours with them in the field ...that's what we had . Big Wave and Smile to you Sofi .
Oh my that grass grows so fast 🙃
Wuuue🎉🎉 we had them too in the Swiss Army M113
Recoilless rifles look like they are fun to fire. 6 must be awesome to watch.
Nice M113!
The Ontos always makes me think - If Monty Python designed a tank THIS is it. We'll give it multiple guns and place them on the OUTSIDE so the crew has to dismount, expose themselves to fire in order to reload them. That just screams Brit comedy or Marine Corps logic. Speaking as a USMC vet, of course. ;) /S
Saw it over the weekend down at the Museum of the American G.I. TOTALLY worth the trip. That thing is NEAT. I want one.
hmmm some of them folks look very familiar to me.. Glad you were out there an shooting the video.. was a pleasure to have met you as well :) will see you next year I hope as well.
The 113 was not very well armored and not a great assault vehicle. It could handle heavy MG and frag but rpgs would cut straight through their flanks. The guy who first told me this had been a 113 driver in nam. In his first week doing combat missions (escorts I believe) they took an RPG on the forward left flank and it went straight through his buttocks. He spent a year in the hospital. Anyways, awesome vid thank you.
Love the M50. Great video, Sophie!!! Thank you!
Love the ONTOS such a funny looking tank thing.
Ontos were gone i think by the time i got there late 1968. I was Army anyway. When i rode on M113 i rode on the roof. Easier to deploy in an ambush and maybe safer if you hit a mine

Pop talked about ONTOS. As a Marine, he loved the firepower.
Thanks Sophie for sharing the ubiquitous M113 and the formidabile Ontos, both AFV that I like very much. In my opinion they should have developed a much upgraded M113 with much improved armour and armament not to mention more powerful engine. It a shame that the "authorities" didn't believe in Ontos because in the jungle was almost ideal with very good off road capability, especially in the swamps and with the 6 × M40A1C was the only AFV Vietnamese really didn't like. Of course the reloading was slow done outside and was and carried few ammo. Good job again as always 👍 👍👍

@Ryan I know very vell that it was upgraded quite a lot but it was never really upgraded the two fundamental weakness: modest armour and small engine. But the basic layout was excellent, reliable and was relatively cheap and easy to assembled. They should have concentrated on this basis and developing into a much improved layout of the old M113...l

“They would come out like rats after the 50 cal round.” Well, their country was invaded and they defended it like rats.
Yeah, gotta love the Ontos it embodies the hotrod mentality that too much is not enough. Thanks for sharing this Sofi.
The Ontos would fry anything less than 100metres behind too. Everyone online had to have shiz together before letting the Ontos speak
Look at all those beauties ! 🤩
Kind of weird how small the m113s are, they look big on film but they are tiny on the inside. I don't know how they managed to stay sane with 10 dudes squozen into it.

I never fully understood exactly how the _recoilless rifle_ worked until I saw a video on Ian McCollum's _FORGOTTEN WEAPONS_ Channel showing one being fired. Being in in front of one OR BEHIND ONE when fired is equally perilous...😉

Thank you very much for this video. I've just received muy 1/16 Takom M50A1 Ontos model kit, it will be a very valuble help
Forgotten Weapons did a video on M8C .50 Cal spotting rifle for the Ontos.
Thanks!
The 113 ACAV crews would carry a section of chain link fence and t-posts for RPG defense when stationary.
Ahhhh..Sofi, I wanted to see the skirmish...lol
Thank you. Nice to have some user history on the Ontos, instead of comments that focus purely on the external loading and back blast issues.
Thanks again Sofilein
Great to see them out in the field, thanks Sofi! 🙏
I got to meet you here since MAGI's so close to school for me. Thanks for sticking around and helping the vets share their stories!
Well done Sofi! 👍
Appreciate your efforts to educate and inform us on such important military equipment and especially the brave men and women past, present.
Ontos, the 2nd-to-last Tankette ever in service! The very last is still in service in Germany, and travels with them in Helicopters. If that sounds nuts, you should check out the Weisel some day.
Good description of Ontos used in combat by Marines in A Shau valley in Vietnam contained in the three book series "Thirty Days Has September" by James Strauss. Both HE and flechette rounds used to effect.
The Ontos is great. There are very few surviving, I believe. Thank you.

There is one sitting on static display at the Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois, along with a number of other really cool tanks, AFV's and artillery pieces. Go visit if you're ever in the area.
'Nam-era Marine. Interesting. always assumed the rifle was an ordinary M2. 50 BMG... thx for upload.
"give them a broadside Mr. Miller!"
FWIW: It seems to me if you lived on something like 10+ acres of land, an M113 would be a GREAT _toolin' around the property_ vehicle.
It was designed as a bunker buster for a normandy type landing
Hi Sofilein! Thank you for a interesting video. Greetings from Sweden!!
Great video! 🥇🎥
Awesome
"I believe we're going to have a little Vietnam skirmish now." And then it ends. I was a little sad, I thought I'd finally get to see an Ontos fire all its guns and I could check that off my life goals. So it goes. It was cool to see the little guy scamper around at least.
Be cool if the added the M50A1 to WoT. But another good video Sofi.
Ontos has to be one of the weirdest vehicles ever created.
Dear Sofilein, We’re wondering why these army vehicles in the Vietnam war were so small in compering with other army vehicles so hopefully somebody can explain this. Thanks anyways for sharing your visit in this museum. Best regards plus ❤️ from the Netherlands

Well one factor is that that area of Indo China: generally is not good country for MBT's or large tanks. Another reason the Ontos was used by the Marines and since they are primarily an amphibious force. Their needs are for fast and light AFV's or anti-tank vehicles. When Vietnam was under Frend occupation, they mostly used the Chaffee which is a light tank.

I would like to know is when did they retro fit the 361 mopar V8 into the Ontos. It was designed and built before the big blocks came out.
Knew the Ontos was a light vehicle but I hadn’t appreciated quite how dinky it was!
👍
The Ontos was more WWII. Not aware of them being in Nam, could be wrong though..
I think "Someone" need to check the Track Tension on the Ontos ...

Horrid things, the m113. Smelly, hot and antiquated. That said, a second class ride is better than a first class walk.

The Ontos was a badly built vehicle. The Armor was almost non existent. It has severe maintenance problems. When the Nam was winding down they were immediately scrapped.
