The US Army never bothered to design and produce tanks between the wars. The Army Arsenals built a few light and medium tanks for testing while making modifications to their Christie concept combat cars. They observed the fighting in Europe during that time so in 1939 declared everything they had was obsolete then went to work designing modern tanks that were better than the Germans. The US figured Nazi Germany was designing a very heavy tank so felt the Army better have one, too. The Army wanted 56 for further testing to work out the bugs then stopped production of those due to having too many problems. The petro-electric and fluid drives required more frequent maintenance and repairs than anticipated. They also had a nagging problem with shirt track life and random breaking due to the extreme weight of the tank. Their crews constantly complained about their cramped working conditions making it difficult for them to perform their tasks. Ordnance then decided that it would take too long to iron out the problems so cancelled the project. One feature on the M6 that was used later was the HVSS.

Brilliant bring back scorpions and scimitar. They are better recon light tank with armour. The landrover soft skin vehicle no armour. Although landrover can do a lot for recon sorties. It can't negotiate heavy mud like the scorpion and scimitar platform. 1000 scorpions for the protection of Britain. 1000 scimitar light recon tank also.
I’m 14hrs from there. Yikes. Wish I could see them all.

I find it cool that the aircraft looks like a WW2 fighter with the canopy sat on top, yet the fuselage is so large that it can fit some guys inside the tail boom.

I thought both engines were side by side and both coupled to just one gearbox that drove the propellers? If there was an engine failure, the other engine could still drive the gearbox.

Lived near White Waltham aerodrome from 1957 to 67. Fairey Aviation were testing these Gannets there, so they flew pretty low on finals to land. Noisy, but not so much as the Fairey Rotodyne which also flew from time to time! Interesting times as a youngster.

Just an excellent, excellent report on the very weird H-37. I've got a couple of hundred hours in the H-19/S-55, and it is clear to see the similar Sikorsky design philosophy in the H-37. My friends who've flown both the H-19 and the H-60 say that those Sikorsky design cues are also evident in the later model. I guess engineers stick with what works :-/

Great video. I love the old Gannet. I was a UK MoD Avionics guy back in the 80s, so not that long after they left service. The one thing I'd add about the dual engine setup is the inherent safety when flying over water. With a single engine over the ocean you have nowhere to land if the engine goes deadstick. With a two engined design you can usually get back to the carrier if one fails. Being based on first gen jet engines that was a much more likely scenario than today, prior to advances in turbine metallurgy et al.
