M1 MacBook Pro and Air review: Apple delivers

Ғылым және технология

Apple has updated three Mac with its own M1 processors: the Macbook Air, the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the Mac mini. Will Intel-based apps run? Will they be fast? Will they live up to Apple's battery life claims? Nilay Patel and Dieter Bohn have a thousand questions, and almost all of them have been answered.

    I'm honestly so surprised that this went as well as it did. I wasn't expecting a dumpster fire or anything, but I was not really expecting much better than Intel based macs on non-native apps. Great job Apple. I have to say though, I had much higher hopes for the webcam after hearing about the better image processing. The main reason that webcams look so bad is the lack of a good strong ISP in normal computers. That truly is a dumpster fire.

  • @williamfowl8670

    @williamfowl8670

    The problem isn't actually the hardware. It's the distance from the pcb. You see it with windows 2-in-1s. Their webcams are so much better than the laptops because the image data can be processed by the cpu directly. On laptops, the wired runs are via USB 2.0, which is terrible for latency and throughput.

It’s also the fact that more people are working at home and would expect a very good camera on a “Pro” machine rather than just an ok one. It’s apple being stingy again, as they are with reducing ports, and expensive r]RAM and storage upgrades. It’s right to call them out on this every single time rather than just accept it. Having said all that, these laptops and the apple mini are impressive, and I’m kind of tempted to get a Mac mini now. I see a lot of comments from windows users who are curious as well.

It was partly Intel‘s fault that the 12“ MacBook had to be discontinued. And now 4 years later Intel is still trying to deliver on those „efficient“ 10nm chips. *Edit: admittedly, Intel‘s new 11th CPU is quite good and competes with TSMCs 7nm node. But a little too late to be taken seriously at that point. And whether that decent quad core CPU is even scalable remains to be seen. It‘ll have to if they want to have any chance in keeping up with AMD and Apple.

    Air is the clear winner this round. Due to efficiency of the M1 chip, you get similar performance, similar battery life, and a similar screen for significantly cheaper. Based on what I’ve seen in this video, I don’t even see a need for the 2-port MacBook Pro to even exist. For example, Id much rather have the Air with 16GB of Unified memory for $1200, than pay $1300 for a base 2-port Pro. If you’re dead set on the Pro, it would definitely be worth it to wait for the upgraded AS chip with 4-ports and a higher performance ceiling.

    I wouldnt say miles ahead in smart watch or laptop. Id say they are first in smartwatch, but not miles ahead of something like galaxy watch, which had features like variable refresh rate display and sleep tracking years before the apple watch got it, and so the competition is close there. In laptops, apple only competes in a small sliver of the overall market, and even then, its always a question of price when making the comparisons, so once again, even if you want to say they're first, you can't say they are miles ahead of people like Dell and Microsoft.

    Hey! I'm trying to decide which of these Macbooks would be best for me, the Air or Pro. I use photoshop to design things like event flyers, cd covers, social media images etc. And also use a software called Movavi to edit videos. Nothing too fancy, mainly trimming, pasting and adding various video clips and audio files together to create videos that are roughly 45 mins to an hour long. Can the Air handle this easy or should I get the pro?
