M&P Shield First Impressions vs the Walther PPS and Glock 26
I had the chance to pick up the brand new M&P Shield yesterday, a small, slim single stack 9mm. I was very curious about this gun since I use the PPS as my primary CCW right now. This video is an overall first impression and size comparison with the PPS and the Glock 26.
I prefer a striker fired CCW, and carried the glock 19 and 26 for years. The Walther PPS has recently moved into my primary carry spot with the same features I love in my glocks but with a slimmer frame. The Shield looks like it may have taken it a step further.

The M&P SHIELD is now the most popular gun in America! Love mine got it in a 9
I've been a Glock guy forever. I have well over 5,000 rounds through my Glock 26 which I carried as a back up pistol before I retired. I've never been more impressed by a pistol out of the box and on the range, than I have the Shield. BEST trigger you will find on a striker fire pistol. CRISP with a great reset. This trigger is nothing like the other M&P's out there. I ran 150 flawless rounds through today. 4 different ammo types. WOW, I love this $399.99 pistol
Thanks for the comparison, just what what I wanted to see.
I love the coloration of that PPS. I wish it was still available.
very good video! waited way too long for a shield/pps comparison ;)
Probably the best two guns to compare since they are both single stack slim framed sub compacts, good job!
Own all three!! Pros and cons on each, but all are fantastic carry firearms.
Nice review. Was looking at the M&P 9c and the shield. Decided with the 9c for the extra rounds.
I just got one and took it out the other day and it ran great.I was shooting 124 fmj reloads and didn't have a single problem.I shot one handed, two handed, weak handed and it worked perfect. The accuracy was good.I was able to keep all rounds in a inch and a half at 10 yards freehand.I was carrying a M&Pc 9mm but this one hides way better on my hip.
I'm a fan of the S&W M&P series, love everything about them carried a Ruger P89 as my duty weapon for over 20yrs then went to the M&P 9mm, love it and carry the compact as my off duty carry. With this new Shield on the market its a got to have it gun for those days when I am wanting to wear a little more less clothing on those dog days of summer in Ohio will have one by the end of the month with fingers crossed.
Nice review dude.
Nice review thank you!
Night sights are available along with extra mags, laser grips. Smith and Wesson kept this gun secret for a long time, but they made sure there are plenty of accessories available. On their website they have all the accessories shown and their msrp.
I own a PPS in .40. Overall, I love it. It's a bit light in .40, but nothing training can't address. Good video.
I agree 100%. I also have the PPS and LOVE it. I'm not looking for another slim 9mm. For capacity I have the 9mm XDm Compact. It too is a very dependable and accurate pistol, with 19 round capacity. Now I look for a good 40cal or 45cal. The XDs comes to mind. The reviews of that pistol are all positive. I can see myself quickly becoming a Springfield fan, as I love the recoil management of my XDm. My brother's XD 40cal subcompact has no discernable difference in recoil as far as I am concerned,
Really great video! My next gun is going to be a subcompact 9x19mm and I can't decide between the Shield or the Glock 26 so this was very helpful. However, I still have not made up my mind..
Hi Dryflyelk, How did you get the olive drab green color on the polymer end of your PPS? Did you use Duracoat and do it yourself? It looks very nice.
great vid. little better lights would be nice but all its great keep up the vids bro
Nice review.
Interesting vid. I have a PPS in .40 and a Glock 27 (same profile as the G26). The PPS is unequivocally my favorite pistol. Haven't tried the M&P Shield, but I've heard nothing but rave reviews. The Springfield XDS also looks like a fantastic pistol. I just love the PPS so much that I personally feel no desire to look further for an ideal carry weapon. Everyone is different, though, and it's a good thing there is a variety of slim carry pistols available. Competition breeds improvement.
Hi ... Good vid! I've been using a PPS 9mm as my EDC and luv this gun. I just got a Shield 9mm because of weight and the positive reviews, but I have to say that so far, I don't see where the trigger is any better than the PPS. The reset is very audible & tactile ... yes, but it's gritty on the take up and sort of springy. Maybe I need to break the gun in and after a few 100 rounds, it may get better. Was that your experience initially?
My new shield is a great gun. I have three other M&Ps and love them al. Number four is a great addition to my flock.
The side part is the external extractor, not a loaded chamber indicator. Atleast thats how it is on the other M&P pistols.
can you give the loaded weight of the Shield with the 7round mag ? thanks. Do you usually use 115 grains amo?
Excellent comparison! It's going to be a homerun. I am already producing holsters for the shield- IWB, OWB, and pocket. Thanks, jacksonleatherworkdotcom
Much more crisp and positive. I've grown used to the glock triggers, and I actually like them, but the shied's trigger is better. Less creep and travel. If I could put it in my glocks I would.
just got mine last week 389 OTD...yea buddy...im gona by another this gun is sweet
Nice Vid, will have to check one out
we can only hope!!
which of these would u recommend for ccw, i am 5"11, 165m/ i am either gonna get g26/walther pps/or the new shield i am going to carry holster style
I have two Glocks that I love, I have fixed the triggers on both (the G26 Gen4 has a problem have to change out a part). it would be nice to have a pistol that has a good trigger at the start.
The PPQ is the best Pistol Walther makes in my opinion, after my M&P it's the most ergonomic Pistol out there, in my opinion. You can always ask people about "do they like it" or not. But as far as reliability, I know they had an issue with the barrel rubbing against the inner slide too much, but that has been fixed, so as long as you buy a brand new one you will be fine. Not that it was a big problem, just wore down the bluing fast.
I want to see someone compare the Glock 26 to the shield with the 7 round mag. You compared it with the extended mag.
I usually open carry a glock 21 gen4' but am getting the ccw over the summer. My choice of gun is gonna be VERY difficult. Shield? PPS? CM9? XDS?
My thoughts exactly.
Very good video I like my Walter PPS in 9 mm. I can't find the Smith & Wesson M&P in 9 mm. I think I'll just stick with my Walter.
What's the Shield's height with the 8 rounds magazine?
Where did you get the handle bhaverstock?
I was thinking about buying a PPQ soon, could you comment on any problems you had with that pistol
What do you do that allows you to shoot that much daily?
Have you ever fired the springfield XDxxSC? I have it in .40S&W and it is THE BEST trigger out of glock, smith and wesson and springfield =D Smooth as butter and crisp as as glass breaking ^_^
no ambidextrous safety or slide stop on the m&p shield?
I love my P22 and my P99 AS 9mm, and for some reason I really want to own a Glock, but they just don't fit my hand right. I love Walthers but I just wasn't feelin' the rectangular feel of the PPS. I've never owned any M&P pistol but I gripped a Shield and later ordered the 9mm model. By the way it feels in my hand, the Shield is the 9mm carry gun for me. Time to retire or sell my BG380 and all the 380 ammo I have.
@10:25 no interchangeable backstraps for the shield.
my PPS trigger is smooth and great!!
I never put the safety on so I am good to go staight from the holster.
how are you goin to carry?? holster type?
Please show me where the Shield or the PPS sell for $299.
i can make up my mind for my first ccw this mp shield vs glock 26
The PPS you demonstrate has the 7 round mag, not an 8 round. I have the PPS, and mine came with the 7&8 round mags. The 6 round mag for the PPS is flush. You corrected this about 3/4 through your video. Weight-wise, the PPS weighs almost identical to the Glock 26 (PPS 1/8oz heavier empty - consult Hickok45 PPS video)). The PPS actually has a heavier polymer and lighter slide than the Glock 26. Between the Shield and the PPS? I wouldn't trade one for the other. Personal preference may vary.
That looks like a very nice pistol!! to me!! Well its a Smith and Wesson!
I've shot all the 3 pistols and the PPS a slightly gritty trigger, but this goes away after about 500-600 rounds (for me that's 3 hours at the range). Also, the PPS is by far the most accurate and softest shooting due to the design that promotes the highest hand grip of the 3. Glocks are cool, but not for concealment. I've tried all 3 pistols in my IWB holster and the PPS is the only one that doesn't print at all, even under a fitted t-shirt. There is not substitute for a good German gun.
i like the m&p pistols look, and how they feel in the hand but they just aren't a ccw for me. i carry the kel tec pf9 now. the 380 in the summer. glock 19 when ive got layers on. easier to grab the bigger handle. to get to my point safeties are dealbreakers on a carry gun. your gun should be ready to go when it is on your hip, or wherever you may carry it. for the safety nazis however this is an awesome gun. i'd love the bigger m&p holstered under my steering wheel.
may be hard for some to understand, but to us gun nuts, they ARE enjoyable. you can never have enough. 2 or 3 guns is simply miniscule to us.
The flush fitting mag only holds 6 and the extended one holds 7. I have it in my pocket right now so im sure of this
I like it but for now I'll stick with my M&P Compact. If this were fully ambidextrous like the other M&P pistols I'd probably be sold, but being a lefty the controls on this would be somewhat awkward to use, especially the safety.
Check out the part 2 I did - bottom line is that it performed perfectly.
Great review -> You may have just cost me ~$500!!! (I need an M&P Shield!!!)
Man, I really should not have looked at this video. I already have two M&Ps! lol
this gun is sold out everywhere here in az
I just picked one up for $399 at my local gun store.
Agreed! That useless safety lever and that ugly warning manual are deal breakers for me. I'll stick to me G26.
I'm really amazed as of 4/16/2012 there are 2 dislikes. What is it that is not to like about this video?
I will never understand why people love rubbing pistols together like they are sticks..
I prefer the Diamondback DB9.
Glock is hard to beat but id go with the shield because of the slimmer profile. PS- Go .40 not 9mm
i would carry in holster
$335 at Buds Police Supply in Lexington, KY!
Why does your PPS say Smith and Wesson on the barrel

+Brooklyn Harley S&W has the import agreement for Walther.
Great video, here in NY we are loosing our freedom, but I guess both guns are
Nice video. This is not directed to you, but I want to throw it out there. So many of the videos describing these guns spend several minutes on the capacity, grips, trigger resets, trigger and sights. For a concealed carry, where you need 3 shots at 3 yards, those things mean absolutely nothing.
I think all three are excellent guns But there's no reason in my mind that a gun magazine should cost morethan $20
Isn't it interesting how those who put down someones video's rarely make any of their own?
these sale for $299 at lawmans supply
I would take the Glock.
We need more warning slogans inscribed on guns. Me tho tupid...
Tell us how you really feel, man. Seems like you're holding back. BTW, since you already know everything, why in the world would you seek out someone else's opinion ...unless, of course, finding faults in others is the only way you compensate for faults within yourself.
ive got lots of money guns and ammo and im a competitive shooter
Go Glock!
You've got all the buz words down - crisp, as opposed to soggy - clean, as opposed to dirty, break, as opposed to stuck, you forgot take up and creep, come on get with the Lemming program - Lemmings and Seepeople love to talk alike even if it makes no sense what so ever, I heard it before so now I'll say it... lol...
i fliched at 4:16
I got mine for 429.00
Whoa now.....lets be clear....the PPS was first to this market....to put the Shield as first in this comparison is very biased. Remember that S&W distributed the PPS in the USA since it's inception. Therefore S&W used the PPS as the basis for its new pistol. Personally I think the S&W ripped of Walther. I'll stick with the original. I'll keep my PPS. Thanks....... Best regards Eric
Both guns are NY complaint...
im going to make a video about absolutely nothing
How 'bout it? Here's a guy who uses made up words like 'demetions' (is that, by chance, 'dimensions'?) and apparently doesn't know the difference between 'your' ( a possessive) and 'you're' (a contraction of 'you are') and we're supposed to shun the guy who actually made a video and bow to this dave as some kind of authority on the subject (or anything else for that matter)? Hah! Get real. Thanks for the vid DryFlyElk - I was looking for other perspectives on the Shield and yours was just that.
SCREW all these warnings stamped all over guns now....we get it, its a gun it fires bullets dont need a reminder stamped on the side
Yikes! Another gun with their warning manual scrolled right across the frame. I'll pass on this overlawyered gun.
you might wanna chill out on buying guns buddy, what are you going to war or something, you shouldn't have more than 2-3, Take it easy bro, save ur money for something enjoyable,
I hate this video, there goes another $449.0
glocks suck they look shitty feel shitty in your hand and are just way cheap they are reliable but just flat out a stupid looking and feeling gun out of all of these i wouldnt buy any i have an acc witness .40 and a colt 1911.45 comander and they havent ever jamed miss fired ever and i shoot atleast 4-5 boxes a day out of each ive had both for about 2 years do the math i owned a glock 23 and i hated reliable as it was it jamed the fist day i buy my guns brand new so that says alot about glock
Both the Shield & the PPS are fantastic weapons. I own a PPS & so far only finger-fucked a couple of shields at the store. Size wise theyre basically the same, but I agree the M&P is a bit more contoured. As for the trigger, my PPS's was a bit gritty up till about 600-700 rounds, and now it resembles a stock Glock trigger. Nothing compares to the stock PPQ trigger in terms of factory striker fired pistols. I can't say I like the safety, but to each his own. Both are great single stack options.
I have two Glocks that I love, I have fixed the triggers on both (the G26 Gen4 has a problem have to change out a part). it would be nice to have a pistol that has a good trigger at the start.
