The XDS 9mm has better sights, a better trigger, a rail for lights or lasers and the textured grip is better for wet conditions. You can also get factory mags in 7, 8 or 9 round size, so you can have up to 10 rounds in the gun, which is not possible in the Shield. Soooo, bottom line, the XDS gives you more features for your money, with more options in how you set it up.

I was dead set in getting the XDS due to how much I enjoy my XD 9, but after holding one in the store the grip felt to aggressive and uncomfortable. The guy behind the counter was a friend of mine and told me about the shield. The grip of shield has no sharp corners or an aggressive pattern. The price difference was also a determining factor, the shield was about $150 cheaper.

  • @JustifyJustin

The exact reason I didn't get the shield. The grip narrows off at the front. That combined with the small size, heavy slide (making it very top heavy), summer conditions making your hands sweaty making the gun squirm after each shot, gritty trigger and with large hands having your trigger pull in the middle of your finger made the Shield a no-go. The 9c is another story though. For a conceal carry I want as aggressive grip as possible. The Shield looks and feels slick... but for anywhere else than a range, no thanks.

I'd like to add my thoughts to your already great review. I agree that there are no losers on the table here. I like both and tried very hard to go with the S&W because I like the looks, not that there's anything wrong with the other one. It was mostly just a personal preference but in the end I opted for the XDS and here's why. First, I read until my eyes were red and couldn't find anything bad about either gun but I have large hands and decided upfront that the gun must be reliable AND fit my hand. With those two must-haves on my list I found the XDS with the extended mag fit better. I didn't measure the difference but I'd say the grip is about 1/4" longer than the Shield with the extended mag. My pinky finger has just enough room to fit securely. With the Shield I was constantly trying to find a place for it. Both tied for reliability so I went with the XDS in .40 FDE. After shooting a few rounds through it I went back and bought one in 9mm and my EDC is which ever gun is closest to me when getting dressed. About the grip safety. I don't like them at all but Springfield did this one right. It's simple, small, and I honestly never feel it. Not even on day one. For those who dislike grip safety's I get it, but try the XDS before ruling it out. The aggressive grips don't bother me either and I like your "Batman" analogy. The overall brick'ish feel of the gun makes me think the XDS is what CATERPILLAR would build if they made guns instead of bulldozers. It's solidly built, but fortunately it' isn't yellow! There are better guns but finding one that fits the had well and is reliable isn't as easy as it sounds for anyone with large hands. I'd much rather have a Sig P229 but the size makes it is out of the question for a concealed EDC gun. The Shield and XDS are both great guns. Flip a coin if you can't decide and you will still win, but if you have larger than normal hands give the XDS a look. Glock has some new models for 2019 that I like. The 43X and 48 both feel good but I don't care for Glock. They are great guns and I highly recommend them but I'm more than happy with my XDS's.

I have both guns also; purchased Shield when they first came out. I didn’t buy the XDS for quite a while because it was more expensive. Lately it had come down and i just bought got one that came with a sift carry bag and included two 8-round mags and one flush fit 7- round mag (but no longer the holster or mag holder). And wow, the price on the Shield has really come down too. I always thought the grip on the Shield was too skinny and lacked sufficient grippy surface so I added the Talon grip texture, which helps. I have not had the chance to shoot the XDS yet for comparison (but, I have full-size XD pistols in 9 And 40.

They are excellent and both are VERY RELIABLE...BTW, XDS trigger is definately SMOOTHER and to be honest, My opinion about EDC choice. I think its better that a EDC gun have a little stiffer trigger. My Sheild gives me that. Also, the rock solid trigger wale is crucial for a self defense EDC pistol. Any horizontal movement can cost you your life. Always check your horizontal trigger movement when choosing an EDC...Any horizontal wiggle no matter how slight it may be is ABSOLOUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. So be thorough with inspection when purchasing.... Both these pistols are great EDC

Good, useful and straight-forward vid addressing a common conundrum -- which slim 9? Thanks! I've been kicking around adding the PSS or the Shield or the XD-S for awhile...complicated by my Kahrs (another good competitor) -- CW-9 and PM-9. You mentioned the Glock 26/27 for higher capacity, albeit chunkier. If one doesn't mind the extra width, I prefer the M&P 9c -- 13 rounds (vs 10 in Glock) for very similar dimensions and only modestly larger than the Shield...except in width.

Both are good choices for CC. Like you said, there is no absolute clear winner. The Shield grip is a smidge thinner, which is better for small hands. I am leaning toward the Shield for that reason so my girlfriend can learn to shoot. I also prefer the Shield's chamber port (for quick load check) over the XDs' popup lever, but that is just personal preference. But go with the one that lets you put more hits on target and feels better in hand.

My shield recoil spring assembly (RSA) broke after being only 3 weeks old an only shooting 300 rounds of standards target loads. The RSA is on back-order with no estimated ship date (so far waiting 1 week). Which is weird because the gun is still being manufactured, from what I can tell this issue has been in existence since 2013. Update: I called S&W today and the RSA is still on backorder. I asked the customer service if they have redesigned the RSA and the customers service representative assured me it hasn't been. So I said, once I get new RSA this may happened again and he said yes. WTH! I don't upderstand they know they have an issue with a design failure and they don't repair it. Don't they understand they are gambling with or lives. I gues it's cheaper to replace the ones that fail instead of improving design/materiel. I guess what I am alluding to is let the buyer beware.

I bought both. At first I thought I would like the Shield b/c it was cheaper and it felt better in my hand at the store. However, I didn't like the trigger pull or the sights. I had to adjust the position of my trigger finger to stop shooting down and to the left(I'm a righty). This caused the gun to jump more d/t my adjusted grip. When I bought the XDS I was shooting dead on from the first shot. It felt great in my hand and I felt in full control when shooting it. I love the sights and I like the trigger a lot better. Fortunately the Shield is such a popular gun I was able to sell it in less than 24 hours for full purchase price(it didn't have the safety on it). I have shot 400+ rounds through the XDS and not a single problem(Walmart ammo, Blazer & Corbon 115 gr +P).

I should start by saying that I love compact guns and the shield/xds9 specifically. However, the shield/xds9/ppq all fall into an in between category for a handgun that I have a hard time justifying, IMO. I love the idea of a shooters pocket gun, but it is just small enough to lose the features that I love from the duty pistols and just big enough to lose the convenience of a pocket 380. (Forgive the long-winded explanation) For a long time CCW guns were the G26/27/SW9c/XD9c/PX4sc etc, etc. They weren't any slimmer than the duty versions, just shorter in length and height. They offer many benefits, shootability/accuracy being the most important IMO, but others such as double stack, same ergonomics, operation, better sights, etc. Plus they come with 10-15+ cap. They give up any notion of pocket carry, at least for most of us. I love my SW9c and carry it as often as I can IWB. Then you had the .380's that were significantly shorter lengths and grips, and were slim enough to pocket carry, .85" or less is ideal IMO. The trade off is the 380 ballistics, capacity, and the shootability/accuracy. These are CQ guns generally. Then came the desire to make a pocketable 9 where length was under 6", handles close to 4", and slimness around .9". I understand trying to shrink the 9 to pocket size and giving up a double stack cap and shootability for a pocket gun with better ballistics. Pocket carry has its disadvantages, but there is little to no clothes or fashion alterations needed to do it. The kahr pm9, beretta nano, kimber solo, sig p290, kel tec pf9, and ruger lc9 all make sense as the goal is to make the 9 pocketable. I have tried most in pocket draw practice and most are still hard to draw clean, reliably. I have a hard time justifying the extra expense on a 9 that is close to the length and height of a g26, but just .2" or .25 slimmer with half of the cap. IWB is always going to be a compromise in buying the right sized pants either way, so I would rather compromise for 12 or 13 rounds than 7 or 8 and be able to reload with 17 or 18 round full size mag as the back up...that or be able to fit it into regular jeans/slacks front pockets and be able to draw without regularly snagging. They upsized the shield/xds/ppq for shootability and removed them from the pocket 9 category in my mind.

To answer your question: you don't know what Glock was thinking when they came out with the G42 in. 380? There's still a market for that particular caliber. They came out with the G43 in 9mm when they were ready, and they've both had success.

I'm thinking about both of them for conceal carry. I have an XDS 45 but too big to conceal. Sometimes it sucks being female and having big hands. Trying to soak up as much info on both but could I really go wrong with buying both (aside from taking a hit in the wallet)??

Totally with you, I carry the XDS 45 but it prints bad on me and is uncomfortable. I was considering the XDS in 9 but the Shield has caught my eye and when I held it at the store it was so comfortable! I'm pretty set on the shield at this point, very thin and feels good in the hands. I'm thinking I'm going to invest into one soon.

I had a shield for a little less then a year and while I liked how comfortable it was to carry and shoot it just was not very accurate at all. Like most people say it shot left for me from day one, and the trigger break always resulted in jerking the barrel around. I was never happy with the grouping with the gun and the fit and finish seemed a little cheapish to me. The rifling in the barrel didnt look to be very fluid and it had burs at the end... Build quality was trumped by the xds which has better magazines that are easy to load, perfect rifling, polished feed ramp, better mag release and better sights out of the box. The biggest things I dont like about the xds are the boxy grip and the grip safety digs into your hand. But I like the xds enough more over the shield to where I have ordered the trigger kit, Tritium sights and prp grips which in a year of owning the shield I could never justify modding it much beyond talon grips. I basically sacrificed the comfort of the shield for the build quality and accuracy of the xds...

Add the apex trigger kit and practice your trigger control. On pistols this small, trigger control is the key to accuracy.

Good video. Like you, I own both and I agree that they are quite comparable. I would say the XDS is a slightly more refined gun with much better stock sights and a slightly better stock trigger. The Shield has more comfortable stock grips. For the collector/ gun enthusiast, I would recommend that they buy both, and for anyone else, I would recommend the Shield because of the tremendous difference in price between the two guns....even with the XDS price dropping from when they first appeared on the scene, they are still $100-$150 more than the Shield (you could buy the Shield and either upgrade the sights or the trigger and still come out cheaper than the XDS).

I wish Smith&Wesson would have undercut the trigger guard more!! Springfield and Glock have a bigger undercut and I like that better. The XDS, like all XDs, is too heavy for that size of a pistol.

Thanks, champer. Smith's really need that done. The new, 2nd Gen., Glock 80% lowers are the only ones doing those undercut right , at this time. Others like Glock and Springfield still aren't giving the finger enough room even though the undercut seem higher than most. They need to be wide enough as well as high enough. I don't know why it's taking manufacturers so long to get this. Smith's gen. 2 M&Ps have no improvement in this regard! Let's see how much they improved those triggers, that they are now bragging on. Too little, so late!

I will agree, that they are fantastic, super high quality firearms. Heavy, but that said, super robust and fit and finish is truly second to none. They almost make Glocks look like inexpensive toys. Just do a comparison of the components and internal parts of a Springfield compared to a Glock. I have. There really is none. Not to mention Glock really hasnt' changed anything since they began.

I agree. the undercut on the trigger guard makes the feel on the xds uncomfortable to me. You would have to have a mini middle finger to get any advantage and bore axis benefit. I have an arthritic knuckle on that finger. My snub nose bangs me up too. I like the other attributes of the xds; but the shield is more comfortable. My local range has both now in range guns and I will finally test it myself on the range.

What it comes down to is safety, or lack thereof. I'd never own a gun without a manual safety lever like with Glocks/XDs. Grip safeties don't apply. What I'm worried about is Glock Leg, where a part of your clothing gets into the holster area while you're reholstering, resulting in you shooting yourself.

Why is it that the rami is never in any of these smaller ccw comparisons? Id Like to hear more about that gun. I looked for reviews on the rami on KZread but there's only a handful. If anyone owns or has opinion on the rami, please feel free to let me know. Im leaning towards that kind of style as an edc, 9mm. Please no glock comments, I don't hate them, its because I need some form of safety besides the finger safety. The rami has a decocker and long first trigger pull and that is good enough for me. Doesn't necessarily have to have a manual safety. New to edc/ccw. Great vid btw.learned a lot.

CZ is great as well. Size weight and price (AMONG OTHER THINGS) becomes an issue when making a "carry" decision. Many great alternatives depending on many factors. I've carried the shield and done some SLIGHT trigger work myself which results in greater accuracy. Carry whats best for you but consider all factors before you spend. JMO I also carry a sig p229 which is much heavier. There are so many variables that the Shield or XDs is a great place to start. STAY SAFE is the concept.

I agree.... The main thing being that the XDS has both a trigger safety and a grip safety.... This substantially decreases the chance of an accidental discharge. The shield is a good gun, but I just don't feel as comfortable with it, safety wise.... Also, with the M&P line, there have been police officers who had accidental discharges with this gun, and it seems too easy to fire when you don't intend to....

  • @wtom2653

    @wtom2653

Slide releases are not meant to be used with your thumb as you would with a 1911! Nearly all pistols are designed to have the slide racked after installing a new full magazine. The Slide release is more of a slide lock for reloading, cleaning, and disassembly.

I have a Shield 40, and the slide release works with a thumb, but is very firm. My Springfield XD Sub compact 40 works a bit easier, but my Glock 22 is by far the worst. However, as I said, there are a few guns made to use the slide release with a thumb such as 1911's and their variants, my Ruger P91, my TA90 (CZ-75) and basically metal framed guns. Seemingly, most Compact Poly guns aren't designed for one hand operation. This is purposely designed to limit snag points protruding from the weapon for holstering and/or concealed carry. Any of the newer compact Poly guns designed for concealed carry have very small controls with extremely flat profiles. The Shield and similar guns are designed for concealed personal protection and not necessarily targeted to competitive shooters, EDC for Law Enforcement or Military. Rapid reloads are not a primary consideration.

I will say that I like the grip on the Shield better but the trigger and sights are better on the XDs. Sure you can buy an upgraded Shield with fiberoptic front and back sights and a better trigger and barrel. But then you have to pay $50 more and while I do like the upgraded Shield's trigger and barrel I do not like fiberoptic rear sights. On the XDs the only thing I wish it had a better part is the grip and that is it.
