Lyricist Reacts to Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust - JTMM Reacts

Welcome to JustTenMoreMinutes aka JTMM aka The Freakin 10! I have covered a lot of bands now and I can count on two hands the bands that captured my attention off the bat. The tone of this lead singer is just perfection. The lyrics and visuals are cool but that tone is just awesome!! More More More!

This is my first time seeing a video from you and that was an amazing reaction! Fun fact! This music video was chosen as the best Finnish music video ever made! Also about the meaning. PotF never give out any official meaning for their songs so that everyone can have their own pure opinions about the songs. The amazing side of this band is that they can pull off any kind of sound! They have soft ballads, cinematic rock, synth rock, pop rock, hard rock EVERYTHING! I highly recommend you check out their music video - Requiem for My Harlequin - It's the lead single from their 9th studio album - Ghostlight - that released earlier this year and the music video is absolutely PHENOMENAL!

This was fun to watch...you reacted just like me when I first heard them!! 😄 The whole band is good, but it's Marko's calming tone that grabbed me. And he has that same tone throughout most of his songs, yet the songs don't all sound alike. I literally listen to them for hours on Spotify (and KZread) without ever getting bored! I've been a listener of yours for a little while, but this put me over and made me a Subscriber! More POTF please! 😁 I think you'll love songs from the Alexander Theater Sessions (like the acoustic guitar you hear in this song, or songs like Angel which just features a piano with Marko's voice). Also love sons from their latest album like "Hello Caberet", "Lust for Life", and "Beyond the Horizon".

I might be the culpable person with my comment on the Auri video. Glad you liked it. Can’t really go wrong with them but some of the live stuff is cool and especially the Alexander theater sessions (angel) in particular. Having said said that, the Alexander theater sessions might not be the most representative of the band as it’s stripped down acoustic versions of their songs.

I've been listening to the Poets for about 10 years now and by this point their music is just part of my personality. I never tire of hearing it. And Marko's voice ... I'm honestly convinced there is nothing that man can't sing if he puts his mind to it. His falsetto is insane, he can do a really rough, gritty metal sound, he does these beautiful ballads ... I'll listen to anything if Marko sang it and it would all sound amazing. I sincerely hope you enjoy your trip down this particular rabbit hole. I haven't checked your other vids yet but I can see you did a reaction to "Late Goodbye" so let me be the one to recommend "Beyond the Horizon" and "Requiem for my Harlequin" from their latest album Ghostlight. Also, the Poets are well known for doing video game soundtracks ("War" is from Alan Wake, for example). The name they use for that is "Old Gods of Asgard" so please check out "Balance Slays the Demon" by them as well.

As you mentioned emotional songs, I think you might like Dancing on Broken Glass from PotF. The video that goes with it is really good and packs a twist at one point that made me look at the message in the song differently from what I got from it at the start, an emotional gut punch.

Always glad to see someone cover Poets of the Fall. I'll second a recommendation for the haunting "Where do we draw the line", but I'll also shout out the song that introduced me to them all the way back in 2003 when I wasn't even really aware of the European music scene: "The Late Goodbye" from their debut album. I discovered it because it was featured as the theme for the video game Max Payne 2 and fit it beautifully --woops, found the reaction to "late goodbye" 10 minutes after my post, thumbs up

In the comments below, there are so brilliant suggestions already, but for the fun of it consider this, Carnival of Rust live from Moscow 2013, and then The Alexander Theatre Session episode 12, and you also have version recorded at Genelec studios. So 3 more versions and you'll find that each have their own personalities somehow.

Good reaction to this wonderful band and video. I think the lyrics represent our lust for material things in our life to the extent of greed. The more we lust after things we do not need encourages the rain creating rust or decay in our lives. The ending of the video tells us that the fortune teller is our heart or soul, The lady in the gas mask without her senses cannot hear the message and the tarot cards at the side of the booth change with her emotions. we are left to wonder at the end if she returns to the carnival of rust representing her mind. The fortune teller (her heart) has the answer to her discontent as the ticket is released from the booth cor cordis or cordium. Heart of Hearts what is in your heart of hearts The follow on to this Requiem for my Harlequin is great to

Carnival of rust is how i was introduced to the band as well. Its awesome to see someone discover them. Interesting how different our interpretations are though. Based on the setting of the video, I think it's a representation of purgatory or hell. The lyrics seem to suggest a guy who is obsessed with someone, possibly stalking someone, possibly in an abusive relationship with them. But one day the other person starts to stand up for themselves and threaten to leave, so in desperation, they try to make them come back by saying they're worthless without them, a carnival of rust if you will. Now with this in mind, think about the first verse. It's like he's asking if you feel greedy or guilty when you say "God help me," when you know you're in the wrong. Going back to the video, being trapped in a box watching your love "fight for her freedom" (the break the plate game) seems like a punishment. The gas mask could represent the toxic relationship she's in. The doll could be a companion to comfort her as she leaves. If you remember, she was startled when he came to life. And then the spiral, the roller coaster, it's like he was trying to hypnotize her. But she was ending the cycle of abuse. Sorry for the long spiel. Thanks for listening.
