I see "Poets of the Fall", I hit "play". I was hoping you would react to them at some point, so I was super excited about this! The Poets are a Finnish band and have been around for a really long time already. As a previous commenter said, they are criminally underrated. (I may be slightly biased because they are my favourite band and have been for going on 10 years). This particular video was voted Best Finnish Music Video of all time, which sure is something. Marko's voice is incredible. I've heard him sing rock and hard rock, ballads and a song best labelled "Bond song" and even something that could be described as country. His falsetto in particular is very impressive, but you can hear it better in other songs by them (I'm sure someone is going to add some to your queue).

Was honestly surprised to see this band pop up here. I love poets, grew up with their music. Heard them for the first times in one of the original Max Payne games from Rockstar when I was no more than 10. Then they had a bunch of songs in the games "Alan Wake" and "Control" by Remedy. I really hope they have music in the new Alan Wake. All great game series if you haven't checked them out. Poets also put on a great live show. Marko(vocals) has great presence and a powerful voice.

Poets of the fall / Old Gods of Asgard (their alias for heavier stuff) has total of 9 songs in Alan Wake 2.

@MikkoRantalainen Yeah, I know. I frankly dont see the need to differentiate the two brands. The majority of old gods songs are still comparable to heavier tracks released under POTF. Take the Happy Song for example. Releasing it under the POTF name instead of Old Gods makes me believe the only reason Old Gods exists is to not flood the POTF discography with game soundtracks.

@@cthree7792 I agree. I fail to see the need for the Old Gods of Asgard alias. When you look at some successful bands like Nightwish who have Master Passion Greed and Slow, Love, Slow published with their own name, it should be obvious that having a huge variety between songs is not a problem for the fan base.

Marko's voice is not only good on its own, it's also because he is actually a classically trained singer. Keyboards are played by Markus "Captain" Karloonen, who was also one of the big names in Amiga tracker 8bit music back in the day and also does the mixing and producing (except one album and you can definitely hear the lower quality!). Bass by Jani Snellman, he comes from the punk scene, but also does classical work. Lead guitar Olli Tukiainen, who is a studied jazz guitarist. Rhythm guitar and backup vocals Jaska Mäkinen, he's from a rock background. Drums by Jari Salminen, who comes from the Pop direction. So it's a really good mix of genres and styles they all bring together and blend wonderfully. You might want to check out their "Revolution Roulette" album if you are into a bit heavier stuff, there might be more of the things you like on there. :) Also their "Old Gods Of Asgard" alter ego band (which they mainly use for video game music) has one or two real bops that scream 80s metal ;)

You cannot define POTF by one song. Their albums tend to have a different feel from one another, but I will accept that a full-on metal head may not find them to hit that sweet spot. If you can see the musical truth, skill and complexity within Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc, then you can respect and enjoy Poets of the Fall even if they are not hard sounding enough. I guarantee it.

Poets of the Fall is one of my fav bands, Marko's voice is so powerful and wonderful. "My Dark Disquiet", "Chasing Echos" and "Beyond the Horizon" are some of my fav songs and I'd love to someday see your reaction/reviews to them. You might also check out their alter ego band "The Old Gods of Asgard", good stuff.

Until a couple of years ago, I had never heard of Poets of the Fall -- and then "Carnival of Rust" showed up in my KZread feed.. I ended up buying every single one of their albums on CD (and even one on LP). Hint -- check out their official website in order to order their albums. Amazon and other online sellers don't carry many of POTF's CDs, and third party sellers will ream you. Shipping may be a tad painful, but the price of their CDs is insanely reasonable, which makes up for it. I do feel that your rating was a tad low, but each person has their own preferences, and as such, I cannot fault your decision.

Sometimes understated songs can reach seldom touched parts of your consciousness. Marko's tone, lyrics and delivery filled a void in my "kick back playlist"

Running out of time may be? :D There are harder songs with Poets if you more liked that but there are many type of songs with them. (Even spanish style rock-melody like or 80 synths rock like Angel for example, really great) Also there are live Alexander Theatre Seesion version of the songs on videos! Recommend them if you like the vocal most! (Jealous Gods for example with Alexandre Theatre seesion)

Poets of the Fall is one of my favourite bands. The band has a gorgeous sound and all of their lyrics and videos carry a beautiful meaning. I'm slightly disappointed you don't like it, but it's not for everyone. It's a very calm sound, which not all people appreciate. For other people who think "well, that was alright but not great", I recommend you check out 'Requiem for My Harlequin' from their latest album, 'The Ultimate Fling', which is one of their heaviest songs (not very heavy, still), and 'The Lie Eternal", one of my personal favourites. Overall, I think 'Carnival of Rust' is the perfect song as an introduction to Poets of the Fall, so if you don't like this one, you probably won't really like the rest, but I implore you to give them one more chance if you didn't hate it.

It's a shame that you were requested to review the music video when the live performance of this song is so good. Search for "Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust (Live w/ Lyrics)" if you want to see the live version. And if you want an acoustic version, there's one with superb quality with the title "Poets of the Fall feat. Triosis+ - Carnival of Rust (Alexander Theatre Sessions / Episode 12)".

I had a comment. But you literally said everything I was going to. It's all the vocals. Everything else is competent, polished, but a little generic. I wanted to like this band, but after trying a few more songs this one is literally the only one I really like. His voice is really good though. Draws you in.

Yeah, this has been somewhat overplayed I radio stations. Never been huge POTF fan myself either. But some songs are like if they come from radio while I'm driving, I won't change the channel because of that.
