I always made the connection that the first half sounded like an engine trying to start up, especially with the two buildups in the song, (the drums sound like an engine stumbling on a cold start), then the solo kicks off and it’s stuck at wide open throttle!

Believe it or not but he came up with that in high school & most of the lyrics came from his high school sweetheart. The first album there were only two guitarists playing, Ed King played bass on their first album. It was Second Helping where the genius of Ed King was truly discovered

You picked an awesome first song in your introduction to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Freebird isn't about him going to war though it's about what it means to be free, in that a bird can fly wherever he wants to go. It's also about everyone wants to be free...that's what this country's all about. Skynyrd are still legendary. The guitarist you hear is Alan Collins. Amazing guitarist. He was one of the founding members of the band. Watching your reaction is so typical of what the song makes me feel like. You just get lost in it. You feel instinctively like you're floating and spinning. It's so...hard to describe.

Your reactions are everything! Welcome to the gold standard of southern rock, the anthem of the south! You heard the dueling guitars of the amazing Allen Collins and Gary Rossington. Watch Skynyrd's live version of this either in Oakland in 1977 (only a few months before the fatal plane crash) or England in 1976 and you will see Allen, Gary and Steve Gaines in action. You know they shred it when the fans that were there for the Rolling Stones booed the Stones and wanted Skynyrd back ('76). If you want to hear more Skynyrd, give "Simple Man" and "Tuesday's Gone" a listen.

Being 64 years old I was raised on Skynyrd music. Lynyrd Skynyrd used three lead guitarist a bass player, piano player/keyboardist and Drummer. All three guitarist were lead quality and each had different kinds of guitars with three different sounds that in Free Bird you can hear but 85% of the solo or kinda solo was Allen Collins with Gary Rossington on the glass slide and Steve Gaines also. You should really check out the live version from the California concert in I believe 1976 or early 1977 just before the plane crash in October of 1977 where Ronnie VanZant the lead singer and leader of the band along with Steve Gaines lead guitarist and one of the female back up singers and Steve Gaines sister Cassie Gaines were killed with road manager and two pilots were all killed in the crash just after they released Street Survivor. It was a few years later that Ronnie's little brother Johnny VanZant took the band Lynyrd Skynyrd back on the road and was the lead singer and with Ricky Medlock taking Steve Gaines place as third lead guitarist. Fact is the very last album Called Last of A Dying Breed is the best they ever put out with Johnny at the lead vocal. The whole album is killer. Check that one out too.
