lol I can't get enough reactions to this song - the incredulous looks, one dude walked out of the room, one fell out of his chair, you're wiping sweat and out of breath - love it! And, yes, this song is where the guitar is the star. Love the lyrics and the vocalist, but he steps aside and allows the guitar to GO. Yes, one of the greatest guitar riffs of all time. Maybe some have matched it, but none are better than this... "Sweet Home Alabama" is a fun, well-known one of theirs, "Simple Man" is excellent... and more. :)

  • @apathy9990

Fahim Ahmad Gary Rossington wasn’t a New member Rossington, I think Allan Collins and possibly Steve Gaines were the ‘Solo’ guitarists in ‘77. Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines all died in plane crash in ‘77. That’s why I used the words I did, I can’t remember in Live version which he is listening to if Gaines was also in duel. There is video of live version not great quality but it’s out there

Fahim Ahmad I don’t understand why you’re debating this with me go back to the original statement I made. I was just clarifying that the end solo wasn’t a solo but a duel and suggested they watch live version. The only thing I can think of is I didn’t specify the year. I was referring to 1977 version with original members because the studio version, and the album cover, that he is listening to is from Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd released in early 70s. Like I said I was there, before KZread, before MTV . We had radio, vinyl, cassette tapes, 8 track tapes, concerts and The Midnight Special on TV

"He's still playing", the part of the guitar solo where Allen is just worming up. LOL Ronnie said, the song was first written with only the first part being all of the song, just the lyric part. Then they decided to add the insane 1/2 half. Also, the record company did not want to put "Free Bird" on the album, because it was too long for radio play. Ronnie said, "I don't care, pick another one to play on the radio, we like like it". It can be fun to watch someone realize what an insanely great song "Free Bird" is for for the first time.

In the song Free bird, Alan Collins is the main guitarist for the solo towards the end. Alan Collins is self taught with the guitar. Gary Rossington plays the slide guitar at the beginning and throughout the song. Steve Gaines does play parts of the ending solo with Alan Collins. October 20, 1977 was a plane crash. Ronnie VanZant (lead vocals), Steve Gaines (guitarist], and Cassie Gaines (back up singer/sister to Steve Gaines) died in the crash along with the flight crew, and some of the people who worked for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Alan Collins wife passed away unexpectedly from a hemorrhage. Alan got into drinking heavy. A new band was started, it was the Rossington/Collins band. Alan continues to drink, and got into an accident that killed his girlfriend, and he was paralyzed from the chest down. He ended up dying a few years later from pneumonia related to being paralyzed. Billy Powell died from a heart attack. Not sure about the bass player, but Gary Rossington plays with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Ronnie brother is the singer.. Artimus Pyle (drummer), and Gary Rossington (guitarist] are still alive.

The group originally included vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, bassist Larry Junstrom and drummer Bob Burns. Around 1972, Leon Wilkerson replaced Junstrom on base guitar, Ed King joined Gary Rossington, and Allen Collins on guitar’s, and Billy Powell joined as the Keyboard/piano player. Around 73’ or 74’ Bob Burns left the band and was replaced by Artimus Pyle on drums, and Ed King was replaced by Steve Gaines, whose sister Cassie Gaines was a back-up vocalist. So the best lineup was the last one imo. Which featured Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Gary Rossington, Allan Collins, and Steve Gaines (guitars), Leon Wilkinson (bass), Billy Powell (piano, keyboards), and Artimus Pyle (drums). This was the lineup that boarded the ill fated plane that crashed in the Mississippi swamp. Taking the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, Dean Kilpatrick(road manager), and the pilot and co-pilot. Allen Collins, Billy Powell, and Ed King have since passed on as well. Now you know the band. May they all fly high and free.

LOL and good luck with EVER playing along with that solo. Allen Collins is a Top 10 guitarist - incredibly underrated. And BTW, he's one of FIVE awesome guitarists that Skynyrd had over their career. Everyone knows Gary Rossington (who's also extremely talented and especially with the slower leads, slide work, etc), but they also had Ed King early on (he wrote the riff to Sweet Home Alabama and was very technically strong as well) and Steve Gaines for about a year before the plane crash. Gaines was FANTASTIC and really pushed Rossington & Collins to reinvigorate their playing and you can tell it in final albums. Then there's the one almost no one knows about: Ricky Medlocke (of Blackfoot fame) - he was in the band early on and is the guitar and vocals for Whitebird and The Seasons. Man what an awesome band - I could go on and on.

My holy trinity is Hendrix, Skynyrd, Hatchet. These guys really SOCKED DEATH, SONICALLY and it's nice to see many of today's youth, especially black youth appreciating this music. I say this because back then, If you were a fan of bands like this, many mainstreamers considered you to be a druggie, acid head or simply a loser. I'm so glad that I always enjoyed ALL MUSIC OF THIS GENRE and it's nice to see it come FULL CIRCLE.

You need to do a live version, no joke!! The live version in Oakland has better vocals and video quality, but the version from Knebworth England in 1976 is the best because the guitars solo is out of this world. The Oakland one spends way too much time showing the crowd instead of the guitars. At Knebworth they opened up for the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger had a stage built to look like a tongue and told the other talent not to use it. So Ronnie (lead singer) pushes the guitar players way out on to the tongue, LOL. Ronnie roamed around the drummer and when he figured he was about done, he called for the end of the song.

The band members here are, Ronnie Van Zant vocals Gary Rossington guitar Allen Collins guitar Ed King bass(,later moved to guitar) Billy Pawel piano Bob Burns drums, then after the completion of this album Leon Wilkinson came back on bass, there were a few changes over a few years, but anything after the crash October 20 1977,was the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band although Gary Rossington gave the band band some sense of legitimacy, without Ronnie on vocals it's not Skynyrd

From this album cover, L to R, Leon Wilkeson (bassist, but left the band during the recording of the album. He came back later) Billy Powell (piano), Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer), standing, Bob Burns (drummer), Allen Collins (primary songwriter writer for this song and guitar), standing far right, Ed King (bass on this album, and then when Leon came back, he also went to guitar) and seated is Gary Rossington, who plays slide guitar on this track. Ronnie was killed in a plane crash in October 1977. He’s the only one in this picture that was killed. Ed King left in 75 and was replaced by Steve Gaines, who was also killed. His sister, and backup singer, known as the Honkettes, was killed, along with their manager, Dean Kilpatrick. Bob Burns was replaced by Artimus Pyle on drums, and he also survived the plane crash. So, two of the guys from the band died, one girl. Besides the pilots, miraculously, everyone else survived.

It's OK to go crazy listening to Freebird for the first time, everyone does. At least for me, I'll never hear this song without thinking back to October 1977. I was listening to KFRC, and the news department broke in with the report confirming an earlier bulletin about Lynyrd Skynyrd being involved in an air crash, and then announcing that Ronnie Van Zandt and two other members of the band had died. When the program resumed, Freebird was put on. Those lyrics really made you think... One of the biggest bands around at that time, future bright as the sun, and it can be over in an instant.
