From wikipedia - Lead vocalist/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray all died as a result of the crash while twenty others survived.[5] The tragedy abruptly halted Lynyrd Skynyrd's career until Van Zant's brother Johnny reformed the band ten years later.

I only got to see this lineup one time (Anaheim Stadium, 1977.) The show also featured Ted Nugent, Foreigner, and REO Speedwagon, each band being at the peak of it's career. (Many bands are at their peak right out of the gate and it flattens out from there, including every band that I mentioned here, except for the classic, Ronnie Vant Zant led, Lynyrd Skynyrd Band.) The crowd pretty much mirrored this one. Suntanned babes and 50,000 plus people getting throttled by Lynyrd Skynyrd. What a day on the green this had to have been!

This was Southern rock at it's finest and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and this was the way we did concerts. They were a lot more fun.

Billy Powell , the piano player, used to just be their roadie. He helped load, unload & set up all the equipment when they toured. They didn’t know he could play had no clue how good he was. One day they were messing around and Billy said he liked Freebird but he would play the intro a lot different if it was up to him. They asked him to show them what he had in mind and played this version. Needless to say he was fired from the crew and hired as the piano player in the band. True story & it comes from a documentary of the band. Here’s they are talking about it kzread.info/dash/bejne/eXuNydFypZa3m6g.html

Imagine going to an all day and night rock concert in 1977 and these guys were the opening act! I was there, man. And it was incredible! Notice that the lead singer was wearing a Neil Young "Tonight's the Night" t shirt on. People think that Lynyrd Skynyrd were in a feud with Neil Young over his songs "Alabama" and "Southern Man" and that their song "Sweet Home Alabama" was a swipe at Neil Young. Young's songs were against Southern racism that still existed in the 1970s (and still does today). Lynyrd Skynyrd's response was that they were not racist (despite the Confederate flag displayed on stage) and that they loved Neil Young.

Soldier Field Chicago July 10th 1977 Super Bowl of Rock. Watching this video made me feel like I was there all over again. Thank so much guys. The women, heat, weed, and alcohol ( it was byob as much as you could carry in only no glass containers )permeated a sold out stadium of 80,000. Sadly only 3 months later we lost Ronnie, Steve, and Cassie to a plane crash in Mississippi.

When Lynyrd Skynyrd first started they practiced atleast eight hours a day. RVS "the lead singer and boss" demanded perfection and as you can tell they all were masters of their instruments. No band back then or today could out perform them on stage. Go check out Knebworth 76 the Stones was playing after LS took them over six hours to take the stage after LS burned it up

I LOVE the sound of pianos, violin, and cellos in rock songs.. I think rock bands miss out sometimes by not using them more, or at least sparingly. It just gives rock songs that special extra when used right.

One of the greatest live bands ever. This performance in an open air stadium with early 70's equipment and it sounds better than in the studio. Incredible band. This is just a few months before the crash. the annoying crowd cuts is because the camera filming the stage at those times went to shit

Wow, wow!! That is a pretty amazing concert - these guitar solos - mind blowing. Lynyrd Skynyrd were a fabulous band with some fantastic songs and Free Bird is one of my favourites. I know tragic things happened to them and you just wonder what they would have achieved if the members of the band had survived the crash. It's such a shame, but we still have footage of this brilliant concert and others, and that's something, and the legacy of their wonderful songs. By the way, guys, just a quick mention of a Led Zeppelin song that I've been playing quite a lot recently and you don't hear it mentioned as often as some others - it's Boogie With Stu and it is so good! When you listen to it you can tell they are having a great time playing it and the boogie piano is played by Ian Stewart, I think he was the player on Rock and Roll. Anyway, it's a great song to dance to and a real feel good one! Hope you react to it some time! Great reaction, guys, thanks.

We saw them in 1977 a few months before the terrible plane crash. I was 17. We were a little late for the concert because the cops pulled us over on the way. We had the top down and we were all drinking beer! When we got to the concert someone already threw up on my seat. That's how it was back then! Great times!

Glad you reacted to this live performance! Totally agree about Billy Powell's piano playing and keyboardists in general. How about Leon Wilkerson on the bass and shirtless Artemis Pyle holdin'it together on drums. I get real nostalgic watching this, although I wasn't at this concert, but saw them in Florida. I can almost feel my sun baked skin, how hot my long hair down my back felt. My girlfriends and I would wind our way through the crowd to get to the front, which wasn't easy and took forever, but man it was worth it.

A must tell story...there is another concert footage, sorry, forgot the location. LS was opening for The Stones. Mich Jaggar gave the “Order” to stay off the front-tongue of the stage, that was for him. During the guitar solo, Ronnie called all guitar players to the tongue and they jammed it out while stomping all over the tongue. LS out-played the Stones!
