This ending scared the daylights out of me in January of '66. I was seven and watched it alone.

This is one of my most vivid memories of the series (I was 7) and one that turned out to be the most influential in other mediums. The "Creature King" episode in the Space Ghost cartoon, only a year later, as well as inspiring "The Collector" in the Avengers comic written by Roy Thomas. Most importantly it influenced Jack Kirby's design of "Ronan the Accuser" in Fantastic Four comics and again in the "Highfather" (aka "Izaya the Inheritor") character in his epic New Gods series. Possibly the single most important story of the series.

This episode scared me as a kid when all the creatures break out. I was 3 going on 4 when this aired.

I remember seeing this as a child. OMG I loved the scene at 18:35 where the monsters are escaping so much! It was probably my single favourite LIS moment.

Thank u for this channel. It’s a wonderful escape from this chaotic world

Stranger Danger!!!!!

#6 in my list of favorite episodes, after the “1st 5”! (I am counting both parts 1 & 2 as one episode). Of course my favorite part was the end teaser for next week! The release of the monsters. It felt like a Halloween horror episode! The same 5 shown over and over to make it appear to be dozens!! BUT....even as a child, I thought the “Owl Monster” was the dumbest, cheapest looking monster I had ever seen, (until Season 2 came along)!! Another mistake, (although LIS never worried about series continuity or scientific accuracy): Smith orders the Robot to steal and fly the Keeper’s ship back to earth. #1...In episode 3, (Island in the Sky), Smith ordered the Robot to fly the Jupiter 2 away while the Robinsons were gone. The Robot clearly stated that flying a spaceship was not in his “skill set”! Why would Smith think the Robot could fly a totally alien ship?? #2...They were still “Lost in Space”. How would they even find their way to Earth? Of course, this was before Siri or Alexa! Today, they could just say “Alexa, fly us to Earth”...because ALL aliens know our names for planets, stars, constellations, galaxies, etc, and use those same names!!!

Michael Rennie would have been great as Marvel Comics' The Collector.

The keeper did say he has two of every species. So that would explain why it looks like the same animal came out twice. Just hard to tell male from female. 😀

Michael Rennie and Jonathan Harris together again after starring in the TV show, The Third Man. Rennie was billed as the star as the suave Harry Lime but of course Harris stole the show as Lime's nervous accountant.

Dave, your thoughts of equating the keeper story with civil rights is wise, and insightful, but I really don’t think that was in the writers minds at that time. Analyzing a ‘60’s kids show through the lens of 2021 thinking. Now Star Trek DID venture into this territory, but I seriously doubt any writers from LIS were that “deep”. They didn’t even care about scientific or physics facts! Now maybe I’m the one mistaken, as I was writing this, I thought about the episode “Wish Upon a Star”. At the end, Robinson tells Smith that when he wished for a slave, he went too far!!! Hmmm! Well, this WAS the best season! By season 2, the writers didn’t even try for some of the moral lessons of season one!

As I recall, it wasn't intended to be a kids' show at first. That came with season 2 when Irwin realized so many kids were watching. My sources may be questionable, Idunno.

@@dwashbur You are correct, it didn’t start out that way! The pilot, which was expanded into episodes 1 and 3-6 was attempted as science fiction/adventure. Instead of military astronauts, or a team of scientists, it was a family show. Then more and more shows focusing on the children and Smith, then just gave up trying in season 2

When Dr Smith is the voice of reason, you know the situation is bad. Any chance the old 70s Filmation Ghost Busters series might get a review at some point? The one with the talking gorilla. It's relatively obscure and would probably have been completely forgotten about if not for the other Ghostbusters franchise, followed by Filmation's attempt to capitalize on its success with a cartoon. Dan Akroyd had never even heard of it, it was that unknown- it was the legal department that saw the trademark issue, the studio negotiated permission with Filmation for the title, but then Filmation opted to compete with it regardless after talks for them to do the cartoon fell through- hence "Real Ghostbusters" being Columbia's stab back at Filmation for doing their own cartoon. (and I'll give subtle mention to a very old Mickey Mouse cartoon that Filmation took their idea from)

This concept was recycled for the space circus episode in season 3.

In those days there was no need for it.

My one question. It took the Jupiter 2 in its never explained sudden ability to "hyperdrive" about 4 days to reach the planet from Earth which John confirms in the "Ark" episode and we hear again in "Wild Adventure" when they near miss Earth. Yet the Keeper, arrogant and incredibly technically advanced, tells Dr. Smith that the journey to Earth is very long and dangerous and many of his creatures would die on the way? I"d bet he can't even cross "the Zenian galaxy" in a night.

The starship Jupiter 2 was not supposed to be able to travel at hyperdrive speeds because it was powered by atomic engines. But then, scientific accuracy wasn't one of the series' hallmarks.

If the Keeper could control Will Penny and Dr Smith, shouldnt he also be able to control John Maureen Judy Don and even the Robot?
