Lost In Irvingland: There Were Giants In The Earth - Lost In Space Season 1 Episode 4
Ойын-сауық
Professor Robinson and Don encounter a 50 foot giant, and learn that a major cold spell is coming. The family will have to head south, and fast. Undaunted by the threat of freezing to death, Dr. Smith stays behind at the Jupiter 2. Who will survive and who won't?

I really have to give Smith credit here. When West was threatening to wring his neck, Smith just stood there being all calm and in control and a little amused by West's threat. He was certainly a chill villain at the beginning, and absolutely nothing like the cowardly simp he quickly devolved into!
This had some touching episodes between father and son. John yells at Will for reactivating the robot against orders, then has a calm talk with him the next day about it. When Will goes to save John from the cyclops, John makes sure Will is okay, then calmly but firmly lectures him about the importance of obeying orders. Then he puts his coat on Will and tweaks his nose. These interactions are so sweet. Of course, Will disobeyed orders many times throughout the series, but always for good reason.

Their interaction was always like that, and always enjoyable to watch.
Notice how Major West is sweating when they’re supposed to be freezing just before they meet the giant… They were filming in the desert southwest😂😂😂
During the laundry scene, you can see the "ostriches" in the background. They can also be seen in the original pilot.
Yeah, it always bothered me that John chewed out Will after he saved their lives. Reminds me of the German officer who obeyed orders to disastrous effect. The general told him, "The Kaiser pays you to know when not to follow orders."
I was 8 years old when Lost in Space debuted in fall 1965.. the first season, though flawed, was the best of the three seasons of the show... I like how you point out its flaws... you're right... the giant was not truly hostile .. until the Robinsons gave it good reason to be hostile towards them!
Poor giant never had a chance, lol.
Dr. Smith- and the robot- could not come along with the others because they weren't in the original pilot. In order for Allen to use the rest of the footage from the first pilot over the next two episodes, he filmed new scenes of Smith and the robot staying behind in the Jupiter 2....and intercut them with the original footage.

The original pilot did give us a taste of what it would have been like without "Smith". A little corny, but I'd like to have given it a shot.
11:23 it's amazing how little laundry baskets have evolved in all this time. 🤓😎✌🏻🚀
After watching many of your reviews I noticed season 1 after that both the jetpack and The Chariot literally disappeared from the show
9:25- In the original unaired series pilot, "No Place To Hide", John's journal {dated December 3, 2001} mentioned that over the "six months" they've been on the planet, "We've established a base camp, domesticated some of the local animals, and cultivated a small farm." In order to recycle the footage from the first pilot for this episode, Irwin Allen had to use some of those scenes of the "creatures" penned in the distance.

Yes. I covered the unaired pilot after I covered the fourth episode, because the first four make such extensive use of the pilot footage.
As cheesy as it is, I love the Giants effects
Dr. Smith needed a good Down home Earth kickin multiple times.
I'll bet it was a long night for Will knowing that his father would "deal with" him the next morning. John rarely scolded Will, but he took a firm position on this and Will probably thought he was in for it. Instead, it was a very touching conversation between them the next day.
Thanks for the look back.
8:15 Now that's some effective parenting. Sometimes works better than punishment. :)
Make all the jokes you want this is one of my favorite expisodes from the show I remember watching it as a little boy and the giant really scared me as I sat on my mother's lap ,but a great episode never the less. 😊😊😊

That's understandable. My big gripe is, we never see another one. You'd think there would be an entire race/.civilization of them, but if there is, we don't get to find out about it.

@@dwashbur It seemed that the show went into an entirely different direction after the bigwigs has forced Irwin to add in a robot and a saboteur after rejecting the original pilot "Nowhere To Hide" which included the giants, the desecrated civilization and the hungry sea ...... At the end of the original unaired pilot, the Robinsons are being observed by 2 natives of the planet of an advanced civilization ...... Obviously Erwin decided not to run with this story line .... It's my personal opinion based on Allen's huge ego that he resented the network's demand for the changes and so he just disassociated himself from the series plot line and just told Harris and the writers to do whatever they wanted to and despite this series being one of his most financially successful ventures, he just couldn't wait for the series to end so that he could start a new series"Land Of The Giants" and retain full control of that series and it's production.

I never imagined anyone being sympathetic towards the one eyed giant. If I had the opportunity at that young age, I certainly would have aimed that laser pistol at that eye. Lol
I enjoy these early episodes with a clearly adversarial Dr. Smith in a military uniform. The good guys aren't wearing that.

Very entertaining comments, to me... Thanks for posting this.
Why are they worried about surviving -150° degrees? They have been traveling in a ship through near absolute zero (-455°) interstellar space the entire time.

@@dwashbur Maybe you have to keep the motor running.

It was never explained, but I later assumed it was similar to an automobile. As long as the car is running, (or the ship is flying), it can generate it’s own electricity for heat, AC, lights, etc. When it’s not running, it’s running off the battery. Even leaving a light on can drain the battery overnight, and as far as heat goes, the cars heat comes from the engine itself. Now being a larger, “modern” spaceship, it should have been well insulated from outside temp extremes, but that will only go so far!!!

10:30 Hey, it's Polyphemus! Maybe Odysseus is around somewhere. They must have landed on that Star Trek planet where the Greek god lived. :D
Surprised that Don didn't have Will re program the robot to destroy Dr Smith.
Nice video I am enjoying your commentary. You are right, Will is really playing guitar. I read that he was playing guitar on set between shoots of these early episodes and they decided to work his ability into this story.

I was glad they let him play it for real instead of making him fake it the way so many such scenes do.

10:37 John and Don, try to explain to that giant that he needs to start heading south immediately before it gets any colder. And could you tell him to knock of all that racket? The shattering amount of noise he's making is ridiculous !!
14:50. This scene of the "cyclops" coming to was added to this episode, because it was suggested in the first pilot there were MORE than one of them lurking about. When it's destroyed by Don's laser weapon, that's the last time you'll ever see it in the series.
