Lost In Irvingland: The Hungry Sea - Lost In Space Season 1 Episode 5
Ойын-сауық
Having barely survived the planetquake that hit when they were in the cavern, the Robinson family decides to return to the ship. But a killer heat wave is coming and they have to figure out a way to survive it. Then they have to cross the inland sea, which is no longer frozen.

This episode shows the Robinson's strong faith in God as they kneel to pray and give thanks for their safety getting through the inland sea. A wonderful show based on strong family values. You don't see that anymore 😔
This episode shows the Robinson's strong faith in God as they kneel to pray and John opens the Bible to give thanks for their safety getting through the inland sea. Strong family values. You don't see that anymore 😔
You'll notice also that the intense cycle of heat and cold never occurs again through the rest of season .. I guess the planet magically changed it's orbit around the sun!
June Lockhart said that when they filmed the angry Sea scene, they placed the chariot on what it’s called a gimbal which allowed for the rocking and rolling effect and then there were men up above emptying buckets and buckets of water over top of them. She said that by the end of the scene, the chariot was knee-deep in water, and they were totally drenched. Lastly, the day after tomorrow on June 25, 2024 June Lockhart turns 99 years old! June, I hope your quality of life is good and strong and that you carry on for a long time. Peace.
This is another favorite episode.
Another great job! Decent effects filming the Chariot crossing the sea. Kinda sad how this series went from what it was to the beyond camp relatively quickly.
Watching the robot play that corny song on a guitar with those hooks was priceless.

I could imagine him strumming with a special pick, but fretting chords would be difficult!! Maybe bottle neck slide?!

Yes. That's not that odd, Jimi Hendrix did it and Doyle Bramhall III does it. They're the only two I know of, though. Most lefties reverse the order of the strings. Them two didn't, and I'm guessing Will didn't restring it for the robot, either.

@@dwashbur A friend of mine plays left-handed and I had to tease him about how he could play so well with his guitar upside down like that.
Aww, you passed over the whirlpool scene, with the famous Judy line: "We have no choice! We must cut to the left!" Otherwise, bring on the shuttlecock!
I’d forgotten the robot actually shakes his head “no” (at 4:31 here). It’s strange seeing that. This was fun as always, Irving; thanks!
Don stands during the prayer service in a moment of protection for the family. And to keep an eye on wayward Debbie.
Thank you for the wonderful commentary .
The first five episodes are my all-time favourites, ever since childhood! Warm memories…
These 1st few shows were very good. After I watched one of your productions it makes me wanna go watch my DVDs
One of my favorite TV shows and at the time I enjoyed these shows and really didn't care about scientific correctness. "A flight of fancy" I did notice the ""computer props" and I'm sure you discussed it somewhere, but as I understand it, they were retired Norad computers that the production studio got at a sale.
I really enjoy these episodes as I watched this show as a kid in Lawrence Township, New Jersey on Channel 5 out of New York City after school. Thank you for posting.
Just saw this episode. Great stuff with Don and John, especially when Don tells will "he's the boss". Thanks for doing this! Finally got the first season on Amazon. A year ago they wanted $100. Now you can get all three seasons for under 20. Binge-watching now.
One of the best episodes!
10:23 Maybe because in the unaired pilot, Don West was a geologist but he lost his doctor's degree when that title went over to Dr. Smith.
The original pilot was rejected by CBS so Irwin Allen cut it into five episodes which were probably the best sci-fi five episodes of all time.
Correction Irving. At the beginning of the episode, major West does not cut a block out with the laser but rather Professor Robinson cuts the block out to rescue major West and the children
The planet would crack up under the continuous temperature extremes, and it's also largely ignored for the rest of the season where the planet seems normal. When the group takes shelter from the extreme heat, they perspire on their faces but not under their arms.

Then after enduring the searing heat they all put their parkas back for the trip back.
I thought it was great that during the quake the robot’s torso swayed back and forth. Somebody on set was thinking.
At the end of the episode, Smith's singing to the robot playing guitar we have the first time where they are being goofy. And the cast is The Big Three - Smith. Will and the robot.
Another thought, Dave : You never see the planet go through this cycle of intense heat and cold again after "The Hungry Sea." I guess it would have been too expensive to show this repeatedly? Or too dangerous for the Robinson family.. and far too limiting for any future episodes...oh well.....it did make make for a great episode or two!
Yes, that was some good model work on the open sea for a mid-1960s TV series.
Wonder how long a year is on this Planet?
It took me a while, but I had to start wondering... in the series and the movie, the Robinsons worry about freezing while aboard the J2. Even damaged, it has power. Turn up the damn heat. I'm sure 150 below zero is nothing like interstellar temps, which are only a few degrees above absolute zero.

Looks like the robot is left handed.
Love your videos. Thank you!
Irving, your Lost in Space work is informative, well-timed, and spot-on. Your edits and commentaries are creative, enjoyable, and worthy of praise. At 9:30, there's mention of The Ultimate Computer. Please find a way to state the parallels this episode has with a Star Trek episode with the same name. Keep up thereat work!

When Major West told Judy that she was "The Ultimate Computer " you should had the Clip of the of the M5 Computer saying "M5 Tie in "
This is my early favorite it reminds me of the mountain wormwood
10:33- Because in the original pilot episode, he was "Doctor Donald West" (not a Major, nor a pilot)- described by the news commentator {Don Forbes}, covering the "Gemini 12" flight, as a "graduate student of the Center for Radio Astronomy". So THAT Don would know have known something about geology.
16:18 WHAAAAAOOOHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
9:48…The dumbest thing John ever did. Yelling “EARTHQUAKE!!!” In the middle of a quake!! Wouldn’t that be obvious to everyone without announcement? Maybe some should have told him, “Technically, we’re not on earth, so…..”
Well… Debbie and the giants survive by migration, it getting hot move, it’s getting cold, move.!
So in this episode we learn that their planet has an orbit which produces extremes in heat and cold, but for some reason later throughout season one, the weather extremes are no longer a problem, and no one ever mentions the inland sea again.
Too bad most of the rest of the series wasn’t like this episode, a group show in which everyone or almost everyone gets a decent scene or two. By the way, Dr. Smith must have come to understand that without the Robinsons and Maj. West, he’d be marooned on Priplanis til the end of his days. Finally, I think this is the first time we see Dr. Smith in his planet-side clothes instead of his uniform. That’s minor, of course. Nice commentary, Irving.
A lot of hot heads in this ep.
The only time i saw the writer William Welch in an Allen production and did not cringe.
How in the world can the robot do proper fingering on the guitar with two... hooks? :D

Ever since I saw that episode, about once a year I think, how did the plants grow back so quickly after everything got burnt up. I didn't remember the part of the prayer with plants all around.

I watched this show during childhood as it was always on independent channels like 11 alive WPIX. Its a tragedy that those independent channels were ruined by being bought out by those crappy new networks or whatever they are now. I hated dr smith but obviously knew that he made the show. With out him being the bad guy it wouldn’t have as much character and be as interesting But ideally you can imagine how much easier and successful the Robison family and major west’s experiences and mission would have been if dr smith hadn’t been there. Any chance of doing voyage to the bottom of the sea? More suggestions: Gilligans island Mash Kolchak the night stauker The prisoner The invaders Buck Rogers (Gil Gerard) One step beyond The outer limits The twilight zone Star Trek (original of course) Columbo You can’t do them all at once and it’s endless but those would be great

It's part of the game I have to play with the copyright bots. Usually if I upload on a weekday the block gets cleared in a few hours. But on the weekend, nobody's paying attention.
13:44 Actually, depending on television show content, you could portray characters praying and showing thankfulness to the God of the Bible. Unfortunately, irreligious and hateful attitudes are the norm of the vast majority of television presentations. One could forget about the movies where gratuitous violence, immoral sex, and the satanic occultism are the most popular films and the biggest money makers. No, I'm not being preachy, this is fact.

I quite agree. But the only way that's going to change is one heart at a time. We aren't called to police the world. We're called to love people and show them who Jesus is.
