Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and one of the greatest villains that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

    I actually want to say that what you're gonna see in the series is most likely not gonna be true to the books in a lot of ways, which is fair since the movies do have their own differences. However, the contrast here is that there are a lot of things that the RoP writers have added that weren't in the original source material or were changed altogether, because at least Peter Jackson tried to stay true to the books. Point is, what happens in this show might differ a bit too much at certain times or most times, and I want you to know that so you understand to separate the books, and the Peter Jackson movies as well, from RoP.

    @@KamalAdnanTheFirst “True to the books”? There is very little second age material, so them filling in characters to create an actual story with dialogue still stays true to the lore. It looks awesome and will be wildly successful.

    @@ClaytonStone895 There were elements of the second age that were referenced in the books. Like Galadriel having a daughter with Celeborn, named Celebrian, who later became Elrond's wife. And it was Celeborn and Elrond who'd later march against Sauron to help Celebrimbor when his true intentions were revealed, but they were eventually defeated due to Sauron's greater numbers. And that's just a couple. I can see the show trying to fill in the gaps but I'm mostly worried that what they do put in there aren't gonna match what was referenced to have happened. Edit: Another thing, the elves immediately became aware of Sauron's treachery right after he made the One Ring and wore it to control the others. This angered him that he began his war against them first. After that is when he gathered the rings made for dwarves and men-they were already made beforehand, and it was the latter nine kings of men who'd later become the Nazgul. So the whole timeline structure the series is going for is definitely gonna be something to take note for the knowledgeable Tolkienite or Tolkiendil.

    Love seeing Hector defending Agustin about him getting his facts mix up. I agree with him because not every hard core fan remembers everything from the source material. A lot of us fan will forget some things as time goes on. Mad respect to you Hector! And love the friendship the three of guys shared. Also, I'm very excited to go back to the world of Middle Earth and see what this show has in store!

    Adam sounded like my mom. We were watching LoTR Fellowship and Two Towers last week, and I showed her this trailer. I was trying to tell her how it follows Galandrial and she's like who. We've watched these movies a hundred times and she still can probably only name three characters. 😂 She always just says, "I can't remember these people names. Just like Harry Potter." It drives me nuts! 😂

    I was there for the panel in hall h and the energy was amazing the cast seemed to love what they were doing everyday. I just couldn’t help but think “I wish Agustin was in here right now” the way the show runners were talking about Lord of the Rings and speaking in elvish along with Steven Colbert being the moderator. I’m 100 percent sure Agustin and Hector and Adam will love this show!!!

    Lord of the rings is the 2nd best selling book (after the bible) in the 20th century - they have a completely different struggle to tackle than turning comics into a movie, especially after the great job (mostly) that Peter Jackson did.

    Hector, from what I understand it's not an adaptation but more "inspired by" based on what the show runners are saying. From listening to their interviews they are "remixing" it much like marvel does while trying to say that they aren't. I want to end with my favorite Tolkien quote, the content of which I hope they respect. "I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history - true or feigned- with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author." -JRR Tolkien

    Although the showrunners are pretty new to the industry they were the only ones who won the pitch to both amazon and Tolkien estate so yeah they had to go through double screening all while competing with other great names who pitched their ideas besides the writers on this show are ppl from cannibal,Breaking bad,sopranos,stranger things1,GOT1-3,toy story 4.

    I'm terrible with names. I had a finger on the appendix while reading LOTR just so I can remember names. It was much worse when I was reading Silmarillion!!! So in my head I may have scenes confused with each other! So its not big deal to get some facts wrong. What's important is if the show captures the atmosphere of Tolkien's books. If it transports me to that world then they did it right! Crossing my fingers.

    Well said Hector! I’ve read Silmarillion at least 3 times when I was a kid and still can’t remember jack shit. People need to unclench about imaginary things. Am just glad to know Agustin loves the middle earth as much as me! Keep up the good work!

    Also according to NERD OF THE RINGS when they attended the hall H panel the were fed with lots of short clips of the upcoming series and the most epic of the clips is the flashback of how morgoth killed the 2 trees. Cant wait to see that i might cry haha

    I’m so happy about this show bcuz 1.SA is one of the most mysterious age and probably the second darkest age in Tolkien but Tolkien only wrote very little about it so I’m glad that they are trying to tell an epic fantasy 2.This show will introduce the books and movies to a whole new generation and keep tolkiens legacy in English literature and in media

    Have no fear Augustin I read the Silmarillion once a year and each time have to constantly research who and what I am reading because what Tolkien (Father and Son) did was on an epic scale so rarely seen.

    @@sawcondiznuts1422 Amazon has no rights to the Simlarillion. They can only put flashes that appearded in the LOTR appendices or some agreements but without putting names or locations in those flashes. This show has so much changes to the Tolkiens wirttings that is barely his work.

    This trailer looked a LOT better than the first one they showed awhile back. Makes me much happier and willing to watch this series and give it a fair shot. CGI and effects looked really good here even just on youtube, while the first trailer just didn't impress me that much.

    I'm excited purely for the chance to see more of the legendarium that still existed in the second age. They only have the rights to the appendices, but it seems that we might see very iconic characters and moments from the Silmarillion (possibly seeing Finrod and (OMG!!) the oath of Feanor!!!) since a lot of that is mentioned in the appendices. The events of the first age are incredibly important to establishing who Galadriel is in the second age. She, like all the Noldor, suffered incredibly fighting Morgoth, and establishing that will help us understand why she will be so driven to root out Sauron.

    It's already fairly obvious they have butched Galadriel's character in the second age... not sure hitting a lore appropriate milestone here or there (which they probably wont either) is going to make all that much difference.

    Appreciate the positivity and openness here because, as someone observing from the outside of this fanbase, the fan response to this show has been a bit exhausting to watch. I love the films dearly - the music from Fellowship in particular is some of the most important music in the world to me. But I've never read the books and know that I don't have that context and connection. But it's been disheartening to see how vitriolic a vocal minority have been. To me, the show looks promising, even if earlier trailers were light on story. At the very least, they are certainly pulling out all of the stops for its production.

    Anybody sending hate to Agustin or anyone for getting facts mixed up is probably kidding themselves about being the know-all and end-all of Tolkien. Everyone gets their facts mixed up - even Tolkien super-nerd Stephen Colbert. It's been a good while since I've read LoTR and the SIlmarillion, so I, too have been brushing up on stuff by watching a LOT of Nerd of the Rings videos - his videos are such an excellent resource to bring my cheese-filled brain up to scratch on everything.

    First of all, so many props to Adam for putting all that work and effort into getting these videos out. I didn't know Adam drove back home on Saturday after such a marathon of activities! Secondly, thanks for meeting with us on Friday at Mike Hess Brewing. It was awesome to share a beer with you, to talk with you and the Heroes Reforged family that showed up! I am excited to for this Lord Of The Rings show. I confess I wasn't too excited when I first heard about it, but as I started seeing the trailers, I got hyped up and I'm ready for it! Thanks to papa Jeff "Kizzes" for making this happen! lol Hoping Hector and Agustin are much better, it's nice to see you having fun! BTW, I heard "Feyenoord" and all I can think of is the futbol club from the Netherlands haha

    Each trailer has increased my enthusiasm for this show! It also is one of the few shows I'll be able to discuss with my father. I know a lot of people are worried but Hector perfectly summed it up with the comic film remix comparisons. And if anything is missing (which there is) I'm sure they will fill it in with the complete DNA of a frog, to fill in the holes and complete the code. If you catch my drift. It is actually crazy we're getting LOTR's, Game of Thrones, Willow plus Dungeons and Dragons content all within' a fairly close amount of time. Fantasy seems to have reached the summit.

    Fantasy fall is approaching very quickly and I can't contain myself!!! It feels like it's been a very long time since we've had high fantasy like LOTR or Willow in media like this and it's long over due! I grew up with the movies and have tried reading the books numerous of times but had a hard time getting into them. So being able to do watch along with you guys and getting Agustin's takes is going to be a real treat! Plus it's been great following along on discord and getting details from the Homies has been super insightful. My little Hobbit heart!! Btw I'm loving all of the creepy moments with the Orcs (and maybe goblins?) that we are seeing in this trailer. It reminds me of when I saw the Orcs in the Fellowship of the Ring for the first time and being so scared by them. The make up and costume design (really the entire team) is just blowing my mind. I really hope they release a behind the scenes documentary on this show.

    I think I have a lot of my facts sideways. I was under the impression that this show wasn't even based on The Silmarillion but I could be wrong. But I am def going to have to re-read The Hobbit, LOTR, and finally crack open the Silmarillion before this show airs. I do also feel like it needs to be pointed out that there were early warning signs from the "scholars" of Tolkien online that the greater internet sphere shot down immediately. Id like to trust the worlds largest company in history to not do anything for a buck but I think that would be naive. And maybe when those people who do know the lore back to front voice concerns they will surely be listened to and not told they are wrong for external physical features they may have. The internet wouldnt do that would they?

    @@ClaytonStone895 Like the one who said on an interview that Tolkien didn't describe his characters and so we don't know what they looked like and said "Whats the colour of Merry's hair? No one knows"... A Tolkien scholar who apparently has never read the Two Towers as the description is in chapter 8 from memory, it's brown and curly by the by. Amazon can buy all the fake scholars it wants, might as well keep throwing money at this point, not like they are lacking money to burn.

    They fired the preeminent Tolkien scholar early on, Tom Shippey, who they name dropped in their panel at SDCC. It is not based on the Silmarilion, Unfinished Tales or any other of Tolkien's writings on the 2nd Age other than thing mentioned in LOTR, the Hobbit or the appendices. They don't have the rights.

    How does Augustin feel about them not following canon as much here, at least with some things? For example, I read somewhere that there wasn't any plate armour described in Tolkiens work, nor were there any black skinned people in the books. I personally don't mind about these two points if the acting, script, story and execution is done well. It does look beautiful and I really hope I will love it as part of the lotr universe.

    Not every character in LOTR had the colour of their skin described. To say nobody was dark-skinned is ridiculous (especially since the hobbits were described as having brown skin in one passage.) LOTR isn't fact, it's fiction, and if you're making an adaptation of that material in modern times it goes without saying that you reflect modern values. Nobody wants to watch a show that's monochrome. Middle-Earth is a world that can be the home of multiple races and ethnicities, just like the real world.

    Tolkien named a lot of ethnicities he didn't describe, plus Variags were Middle Eastern and Haradrim were black. The plate armor thing is actually pretty weird (Tolkien avoided it because it was a later development in armor IRL). The only character ever described in something similar is Prince Imrahil in RotK

    @@blueskybelyr Supposedly, Tolkien conceived of the lore of Middle-Earth as his take on English mythology. Regarding skin colour, it was heavily implied in his writings that the western forces (the "good guys") had lighter skin tones while those from the far east and south who fought on the side of Sauron were darker skinned or non-white. Modern day adaptations to film and screen would clearly want to avoid making such a distinction in terms of skin colour for obvious reasons.

    20 years? I've read the Silmarilion like 7 times in 20 years. just for context, i've read the Illiad 16 times and the Odyssey 8 times.

    For info for everybody, the blond hair character is not Sauron ! It's the high priestess of Melkor cult played by Bridie Sisson ! Sauron in his elvish form Annatar the lord of gifts will be played by Anson Boon in the future seasons of the show !

    I will be watching just for the visuals. It is already head and shoulders above Prime’s Wheel of Time visually. Since the characterizations are already so thin in the Silmarrilion, I will eager to see where the actors take things. Hopefully the script doesn’t suck. If they pay the same attention to the script as they have to the visual I have very little fear.

    The rings of power, were made after the main story lines ended with the Noldor elves and Melkor in the Silmarillion which was the 1st age. Sauron a main lieutenant of Melkor rose again in the 2nd age and made the rings of power. That's the small time frame that the show is supposed to be based on. They are not improving anything, they are just doing a VERY LOOSE take on one of the tales of middle earth IMO.

    It is anything but a small time frame they are covering the dark age and rise and rule of sauron which is like 2000+ yrs but this being a tv show they are condensing it to 200yrs or smthg else all of the mortal characters will die per episode and ppl will not have emotional investment

    Some of the character designs/costumes look...off? To me. Overall great visuals but yeah something about how the people are lit/shot is throwing me off. I can't even describe what I mean. Hope it's good!

    I'm with Hector, people need to stop bashing people not knowing exact details. The show is BASED off the books, it's not an exact one to on retelling, even Agustin said that the books are dry so they had to change things to make it better for the general viewers. Books will never transfer perfectly to screen because half of what makes the "better than the movie/show" is that your imagining the details so you will always be let down a little. Take a breath and just watch and enjoy
