The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - Official Trailer Reaction

Ойын-сауық

This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

    I actually enjoy the extended versions of the original trilogy better than the theater version. Idk why but the extra scenes add so much for me

    To me Hobbit movies (part 2 and 3) are unwatchable, unless they are extended editions. I hated theatrical version for those two (first part was awesome, next ones went downhill pretty fast in my opinion) and I watched them only few years after and they are at least watchable when extended scenes got added. I definetely think Hobbit movies require extended edition to be watched properly, so much was cut and so much scraps of those deleted scenes are still present in theatrical, so extended ed makes them more fleshed out. In the case of LoTR trilogy, the added scenes only add watch time in my opinion. They are cool, but theatrical versions are already perfect.

    That's because the extra scenes aren't filler, but were only cut to reduce the length of the theatrical version, which was already unusually long. The extended editions actually enhance the rest of the film, deepen the story.

    Not sure how I feel about that Gandalf looking guy who took the apple from the hobbit. In the books he wasn't in his flesh-bound Istari form sundered from Valinor during this age. However, Tolkien wrote: "During the earliest years of Middle-earth's history Olorin (the Maia spirit who arrived upon Middle-earth as Gandalf) is believed to have walked among the elves unseen, or in form as one of them, and they did not know whence came the fair visions or the promptings of wisdom that he put into their hearts. In later days he was the friend of all the Children of Illuvatar, known to them as Gandalf, and he took pity on their sorrows, and those who listened to him awoke from despair and put away imaginations of darkness."

    If her brother is Finrod, we should see Beren and the werewolf. Here's hoping they can deliver. I did find the trailer a bit random, and failed to tell us what the show is actually about. All they show us, are the characters involved and some of the locations.

  • @BlackWolflord

    The question being : if it's indeed Finrod (and no reason it is not), then this part of the story happens during the First Age. And we know way more about Beren and Luthien than we do about most of these characters from the trailer. Not even mentioning that the series supposedly takes place during the Second Age since we'll see Sauron's rise to power in Numenor. Things don't hold up here.

    I’m a little worried about this show. I’m a big Tolkien head and even I can’t tell what the story is going to be after all these trailers. Galadriel is hunting Sauron is the most I have. But when in the Second Age are we? We know its after Sauron’s war with the elves. Is there going to be time skips to cover 2,000 years of history? I just couldn’t say what S1 is going to give me and that scares me after all I’ve heard about this series’ behind the scenes issues.

  • @emmetbayne2561

    @emmetbayne2561

    According to the showrunners, they're going to be compressing most of the major events of the Second Age to one human lifetime. And while that is a departure from the lore, I think it allows for more narrative opportunities. We'll be able to see everything from the Forging of the Rings to the Last Alliance without killing off the whole mortal cast every couple of episodes. For a specific date, it seems like from interviews and such that it picks up 1,000 years after the end of the First Age. (On an anecdotal note, my older brother, who is a huge fan of all of Tolkien's writings, from the Silm to the Histories of Middle-Earth and the professor's letters, was lucky enough to go to the premiere of the first 2 episodes in NYC last night, and he gave the first two episodes a 9/10. Not as good as the LOTR films, but far and away leagues above the Hobbit movies)

  • @LuxLoser

    @@emmetbayne2561 I'm glad it will be enjoyable. But in general I really don't like that change. It removes the concept of Sauron acting slowly, of being careful and meticulous. With Galadriel as the main character, they could have jumped a full 3,000 years at various points. They don't have to jump each episode, but maybe each season. I don't know... There's a LOT that happens in that 3,000 years.

  • @emmetbayne2561

    @emmetbayne2561

    Жыл бұрын

    @@LuxLoser that's a fair concern. From what we've been told, the showrunners have looked at the 4 major stories that happen in the second age (Forging of the Rings, War of Elves and Sauron, Fall of Numenor, and the Last Alliance), and are looking to delve into them in each season while planting seeds throughout. My guess is that Season 1 is mostly set up, the Rings will be forged in season 2, the Wars of Elves and Sauron will be the main focus of Season 3, Numenor sinks in season 4, and the Last Alliance happens in season 5. In some ways, this does feel like rushing, but I think it provides interesting opportunities. For instance, having the show start with Tar-Miriel, Ar-Pharazon, Elendil, and Isildur in Numenor, it allows you to take very incremental development over generations in the books and apply them to one. Like, instead of Pharazon starting as a wholly villainous figure whose family has been aligned against the Faithful for centuries, we get to see one man descend down that road. While it is a departure from the lore, and that's always a cause for anxiety, I think the narrative and character opportunities it provides makes sense for an adaptation

  • @LuxLoser

    @LuxLoser

    Жыл бұрын

    @@emmetbayne2561 I could get behind that. But haven't the trailers implied Galadriel is hunting Sauron? That implies that this is set AFTER the War of the Elves and Sauron, because prior to that, the Elves were not aware that Sauron was evil, nor did they have any warriors hunting him down.

  • @emmetbayne2561

    @emmetbayne2561

    Жыл бұрын

    @@LuxLoser This does seem to be where the show takes some liberties, while also interacting with the lore. The set-up of the show seems to indicate that Galadriel has been hunting down any trace of Sauron in the hopes of avenging her brother, to the point where other Elven characters (namely Elrond and Galadriel) tell her that she is needlessly risking herself and others in pursuit of an enemy they don't think is out there just yet. (Elrond's "put up your sword" and Gil Galad's "The war is over, now our days of peace begin" suggest this. So while the show does have Galadriel personally invested in searching for Sauron, it is also taking cues from the lore in that most other Elves believe at this point that they are in a time of peace. There definitely are changes, and I'm sure not all of them will play perfectly well, but from what I've seen from promotional interviews and articles, and what I've heard about the first two episodes, the changes were not done thoughtlessly or out of disrespect to Tolkien, but rather for the reason of providing a narrative thrust to the entirety of the Second Age that's necessary for adaptation. Even if the show doesn't meet my or any other's expectations, there's no denying the passion for Tolkien's books, notes, and letters and the love for Middle-Earth that the creative team behind this show has Just hearing the showrunners talk about it has made me excited to dive back into my reread of the Unfinished Tales

    Tolkien book fan here… I know Tolkien’s legendarium from the creation of Arda to the 4th age. Love the ENTIRE story! I think this ROP show covers “the setting of the stage” pretty well. One might get a general understanding of where we are in time: After the First Age and before the events of the 3rd Age. The show’s trailers depicts Locations, some prehistory about the 1st Age, and Characters that link to the future 3rdAge of Frodo’s/Aragon’s stories in The LOTR. All good stuff for normies that don’t know the books. BUT…. The TV Show’s inaccuracies will not be in the setting. They got that down. Visually very well too. The ROP inaccuracies come in the character depiction and swapping they’ve done, and the story and sequence of events they depict in this time period. That’s where their depictions vary greatly from the tales in the books (Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, & Return of the King Appendices). Drastically different in my opinion. I heard one critique say “ROP TV Show is giving audiences the climatic events of the end of the 2nd Age, but isn’t doing justice to the buildup events and characters that lead to that climax.” So normies… be careful of adopting the show as “what Tolkien wrote”. Read the source material if you can. Judge from that. It might be entertaining But will it be Tolkien’s tale as described in his books? That’s the argument on the internet. For some …the changes are too much. For others… it’s tolerated.

    @Brandon Baerga, Peter Jackson didn't even want to direct the Hobbit movies. He was essentially forced into it as a result of prolonged rights disputes. He's not possessive of LOTR the same way that Lucas was of Star Wars.

    REACTION SERIES TO GOT

    The trailer is on amazon prime, saw it yesterday on big TV, looks better and song sounds better (first time I saw/heard the trailer on twitter). I think it is also a conscious choice to not give away to much from the score. And with so many scenes in this trailer, they would had to cut several small pieces of the score together, because I don't think that one longer part of it would have fit.

    So they chose a song with the lyrics "speak your truth" to a Lord of the Rings show. I laughed out loud.

    As someone who loves the fantasy genre and loved LOTR and liked the Hobbit, I can't wait for this series. I know it's DOA for many people but I'm going to give it a shot and let it speak for itself.

    Going by the complaints and backlash leading up to the trilogy, you would believe that the movies would be DOA also, but they turned out fine. There are so many lies and misinformation circulating online about this show that I think many people will be shocked by what the show actually ends up being.

    The Tolkien property Amazon has the rights to mentions Galadriel once: it says she was the wife of Celeborn. That's it. Nothing else. So how faithful is The Rings of Power to Tolkien? The people defending the show and pushing back against the criticism are not Tolkien fans. There is very little Tolkien here. If that maters to you you may be a Tolkien fan. If it doesn't you aren't.

    I'm a fan of the world Tolkien built. I'm not someone who treats Tolkien's writings as if they are religious texts. LOTR movies changed a ton from the books, and they were still great.
