This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

I love how young Elrond has the same cadence as old Elrond. I know the show isn't a direct prequel, but the touches like this help make it feel like Middle-earth.

I love her as a character. I just wish they’d depicted dwarf women as nearly indistinguishable from the men, like Gimli said.
I think the stranger who landed might definitely be one of the blue wizards, maybe Alatar who was described by Tolkien as an old wizened man but not as old looking as Gandalf, and he came in the second age during the forging of the rings to help against the forces of Sauron. It really wouldn’t surprise me if it is, and it would be sooooo cool. Gandalf didn’t come until the 3rd age, but, they’ve already changed up some timelines anyway lol

I was honestly getting tired of the gore and bloodshed so it's fun to escape into a true fantasy.

I got serious chills when they showed Kazad-Dum and Moria. It looks as amazing as the movies. And the thunderous music by the great Bear McReary just make you want to want to grab a big ass war hammer! Prince Durin is already my favorite character of the show. I felt his pain when he talked about how hurt he was that Elrond hadn’t kept in touch for 20 years. I’d be pissed too. But I love that his amazing wife helped him to forgive him. I saw someone posit that this is another being that was a test-run of the whole wizard (clothe a divine being in mortal flesh) process.
I think we are meeting the folks from Numenor next episode, that's the boat that picked up Galadriel and Halbrand, and that's where we are gonna meet the young Isildur, whom the show has announced the casting for and shown promo pictures of.
I like how the orc was mole-like, specialized for tunnel digging.

Also, the blue wizards WERE sent in the Second Age, according to the limited canon lore (several thousand years before Saruman, Gandalf and Radagast - who were sent in the Third Age). Tolkien wrote VERY little about the blue wizards but "speculated" that they might have had a significant role in hampering Sauron's ability to rally military support from the Men of the East and South during the Second Age.

A big takeaway for me from the first two episodes is the sense of mystery the show has. Sure, we know some characters like Galadriel, Elrond, Gil-Galad, Celebirn etc, but for once with a Tolkien adaption we have original characters and original plot threads, so we don't know for sure where it's headed or what each character's fate will be. And that's really, really cool.

I couldn't wait to see this video after watching episode 2! You guys are a part of my TV watching experience now. And, you've taught me SO much about Marvel (and I'm a DC guy). Thank you!
You guys are a breath of fresh air in the reaction space. I dont want politics to affect my enjoyment of a show. Im a big tolkin nerd, but im no where near the level some people are. Ive read the rings books up to 10 times, and silmarillion 2 times. at this time in the timeline Dwarves discover Mithril. so its very likely that they are coveting. Mithril is their greatest prize, and their downfall. Celebrimbor does not only assist in forging the rings but also Mithril into armour. i would say theres not a lot of entities the stranger can be, hes either a Maia of some form, potentially a Wizard, potentially an unknown as Tolkien left a lot of them in the undying halls with no story. Or some evil herald, in which case he would also be a maia. i think hes got potential to be a "wizzard" in that he does 2 very similar things to what Gandalf did, but i do not think its Gandalf. in the lore gandalf comes to middle earth later, as do all the wizzards, however in appendices Tolkien did change his mind and say the Blue 2 came earlier. they went into the south. Gonna get the maps i have out a second.... doo doo doo. The Harfoots are currently in the Rhovanion (just north or Mordor) and Bronwyn is in the Southlands (kinda in mordor) so its very possible its a Bluse wiz and he will head south.
KHAZAD-DUM!!! Hahaha love it ❤️❤️❤️ Elrond and Durin are my favorites so far (along with Nori) and I like Halbrand. Good alpha energy on him. More flawed and dismissive . Like a scoundrel of Middle-Earth. But the most intriguing? THE STRANGER! Shoutout to NerdOfTheRings for awesome lore! Take a look at his channel, guys ❤️
The whole fire going out and starting back up again thing with The Stranger reminds me of the king’s comment about trying to blow out a fire. When you blow hard it can seem like the fire’s out for a moment… and then it lights up again.

Agustin, I swear to gods, I SHOUTED with joy when I saw Celebrimbor present the blueprints for the Ring-Forges of Ost-in-Edhil... (and I CRIED when I saw Eregion!) And yes, the famed Hollin Gate has not yet been crafted -- that comes later when Celebrimbor and Narvi collaborate to create the Door (before Sauron arrives to wage war on the Elves of Eregion).
Really enjoying this show so far, great to see the reaction of different levels of knowledge of middle earth, i'm more in the Adam level where love the films but don't know a whole lot, so to see Rios get really giddy and excited watching it is fun to watch. The only problem i have is when there is high stakes with characters like Galadriel as we know she is in the future films, so its obvious she will survive, but other than that this show is stunning to watch, and bring on more. The character that fell from the sky so to speak, looked like he was talking to the firefly, like Gandalf did when he talked to the moth on top of the tower when he was captured, so might be a chance it is Gandalf, how old can they be, the wizards that is, when did they arrive in middle earth.
I've been waiting for this reaction. DWARVES! Can't wait for episode 3
I think the wardrobe department should win a lot of awards.
Gotta be Gandalf. He whispered to those fireflies the same way he whispered to that butterfly in ‘Fellowship’.
Glad you guys have been enjoying this so much. Great to watch your reaction!

Lindon is a central location in the new edition of the LotR RPG, The One Ring, and it’s so cool to see it at the height of its glory.
My vibe of the maybe-wizard, as someone who knows nothing, is like someone who was created by or for evil, but doesn't necessarily have to turn out that way, especially because he's been found by "the most unlikely creature imaginable."
Good name-drop with Nerd of the Rings. I'm in the same boat with you, I've been watching his entire collection for roughly the past year or so.
Really liking the first 2 episodes, and the Kazad-Dum part was great, especially the Wizard of Oz vibes I got from the first Door scene, can't wait to watch the rest
Aragorn says te far countries of Rhun and Harad are where "the stars are strange" - if those constellations aren't familiar to Poppy... Might be a hint at Blue Wizard for the stranger? I suspect the person on the ship at the end is Earendil the Mariner, and we're headed for Numenor.

Loving your reactions. Thanks. Just a reminder, AmazonStudios does NOT have the rights to The Silmarillion. They have the same rights as Peter Jackson and his team when they made the six movies in this franchise. They are using the Appendices of The Return of the King. In there, there is an outline of the Second Age...which the Rings of Power series is based on. They can reference things that are written in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (trilogy), but cannot expand on it...more than what was mentioned. For example, the can reference the Two Trees of Valinor, but not to include Ungoliant more than just mentioning...for its story is in The Silmarillion. Loving this series SO much. The relationships that are being "forged". Also, The Stranger may be Gandalf...but the show will not use that name, for he was know as Gandalf in the Third Age (by the men of Arnor) but was known as Olórin previously. So...if you hear another name...it will most likely be Olórin before Gandalf (for sure). Yeah, I really do NOT believe that Halbrand is who he says he is. He is running from something/someone...and him hiding his sigil (under his shirt) only supports that. I really don't think that he is Ilsildor, but someone else. Cannot wait for your next reaction. Thank you for all that you do in this space. Your reactions are always a LOT of fun.

I can see him getting his hand on the morgul blade at some point. It would be a tragic arc for this character to become the Witch King
The Stranger likely isn't Gandalf or Sauron, but one of the Blue Wizards...one wanders off to the East, while the other wanders off to the Southlands, but we never really get much detail on them, so it'd be easier for Amazon to adapt them than a well-established character. Or, it could be a complete twist and that's just a Balrog that's not in its final fiery form, and it's trying to answer the call of Sauron...would be kind of hilarious, having these innocent Harfoots trying to help him out only to discover it's a Balrog when he pops into his full fire and shadow form. Also, almost certain that's not the Arkenstone...it's the wrong mountain for one (they're under the Misty Mountains, while the Arkenstone was found beneath the Lonely Mountain hundreds of miles away), and it's thousands of years too early. It's very likely to be the first sample of mithril that the dwarves have found, and they're just starting to learn about its properties. I'm so happy Amazon has managed to make this world feel properly lived-in and alive...makes the show so much more interesting and immersive that way. Khazad-dûm looks amazing, it's no wonder the dwarves want to recapture it and bring it back to its former glory.
I thought the vato could be Gandalf based on the Ian Mckelany look he was sporting but 3 clues lead me to believe it could be Sauron. 1. As you guys pointed out the fire gave out no heat. 2. The reason a fire gives no heat is because the evil is overwhelming 3. When Gandalf threw the one ring in the fire in “Fellowship” Frodo was able to pick it up without getting burned. (Refer to reason 2) I could be wrong. Who cares. It’s only speculation. I will enjoy watching the show and find out through the episodes. Great review fellas

I bet that Halbrand is actually Sauron in disguise. You heard it here!
Firmly in the 'Stranger is evil' camp.
My understanding is that they moved out of New Zealand because of the pandemic. They couldn't get any guarantees that they wouldn't completely close the borders again and didn't want to risk being trapped in New Zealand so far away from everything else.
I love that Hector is saying 'Dude it's Gandalf 100%!' and 5 minutes later: 'Dude it's Sauron, I'm sure!' :D Also, Gandalf came to the Middle Earth at the end of the Second Age so I really hope it's not Gandalf! Also I feel that it's heavily hinted that this is an evil character. He clearly doesn't know who he is, so my theory is: what if this is Morgoth? Maybe Sauron wants to use him somehow to gain more power? Or it's simply Sauron, but why doesn't he know anything about himself? If this is one of the wizards, it has to be a blue wizard cause they are the onbly ones that came to Middle Earth in the Second Age. But my bet is it's Morgoth! I know it's not exactly according to the canon but honestly it would bother me so much more if this was Gandalf. There is so much more to the world of Tolkien than jus Gandalf and I would love to see some new characters.

I’m convinced the sky fallen character will be the material of which the one ring is made. Sauron obviously is experimenting in turning living things into material as seen in the forge in epi 1. And this character has all the properties of the ring. Cold even in fire, a mind of its own, affinity and less reaction in connection to the hobbit race, full of chaos. Also has similar background whispers as the ring of the trilogy. I bet soon enough he will turn invisible too.
You is the reaction that I need, there is potential, not trying to see everything in 2 episodes, the first movie was really slow but good
I think Durin and his dad were looking at the first of the Mithril they found.
I wasn’t all that convinced after the first episode because the amount of exposition made me feel disconnected but the second episode had me in its spell. I believe the thing in the dwarf box is Mithril they’ve mined, Theo might become a future Nazgul and the Stranger is a wizard. Also judging from the silhouette the person on the boat who ends up rescuing Galadriel and Halbrand is going to be Isildur.
Calling it now, the dude on the boat is Sauron
Love love love the dwarves and Khazad dum
“Is that nosferatu?” “No it’s predator” Why tf was that so funny
Sucks season 2 won’t be filmed in my home country but still looking forward to it !
From memory the five wizards arrived in the year 1000 of the Third Age, but in his ever-changing script he did have the Blue Wizards come to Middle Earth in the Second Age. The Stranger could be one of them, but odd if they didn't arrive together as they were close. Sauron is possible, or perhaps a novel origin story for the Witch-King! The timeline doesn't fit for Gandalf but I do think this is a big change they'll make with the lore. Gandalf is a major draw for general audiences. Otherwise a blue wizard.

@@AlanHoey86 possibly. I wouldn't mind following a different wizard. I believe Gandalf has only been on middle earth for a few thousand years by the time of the FOTR. I may have missed it but I dont recall how long this takes place before those events

@@Michaelf1968 Gandalf came about 1,000 yrs into the 3rd age. This show is suppose to take place around mid-2nd age ish (the second age was around 3,500 yrs.. and the show is condensing a lot, so it’s sort of hard to really gauge)
The only beings that come down from the sky are the Maiar and the Valar, and typically they only do so when in the outer void. That man in the crater is definitely not Gandalf, and I doubt he's a Blue Wizard either, as they came over in the Third Age.

In some of Tolkiens tales they came over in the second age, around the time of the forging of the one ring. I’m leaning Blue Wizard or a hopped up in the time line Gandalf, I think the hint is in the fact that the “meteor/fireball” travelled west to east and didn’t appear until after the gates to Valinor had opened for the elves.
Loving the reaction 👊🏾🤙🏽🙌
Just remember guys, it was in the Second Age in Khazad-dum, that the Dwarves inadvertently awoken the Balrog (Durin's Bane) from it's slumber.
