    I feel like the real confrontation between Sauron and the Lich King would consist of them just sending hordes of minions at each other, without ever leaving their respective towers.

    Maybe we can have someone like Beyonder force them to fight. During the Marvel Secret Wars, a cosmic entity known as Beyonder was basically like “Hmm, I wonder who would win in a fight, good or evil?”. So he just teleportd a bunch of heroes and villains to a random planet so they could fight. Fun Fact: Spider-Man got the Black Suit (Venom Symbiote) during this event.

    It also references that in canon Arthas, upon reawakening in Wrath of the Lich King, tore out his own heart and tossed it down the Icecrown Glacier. And there is a quest where we can find and destroy it, making the Lich King much weaker for the final confrontation.

    Its kinda easy to forget that Sauron is the *original* fantasy Dark Lord and that literally every single one that came after was based on him Fun facts: 1. The interesting thing about Sauron, and why Tolkien refers to him as the closest imaginable example of true evil to him, is that he's genuenly convinced that he's doing the world a favor. He believes that by removing all redundancies from the world that he would create a utopia of efficiency. The problem was that the things *HE* saw as redundat were things like beauty, love, humility and honor. He just didn't see the point with how warped his viewpoint was. 2. Arthas is actually canonically the only Warcraft villain who *WON* No joke, at the end of his raid ,and expansion, he basically one shots the entire raid group and reveals that he was toying with everyone and that the expansion was just him putting up a series of challenges to assemble the most powerfull warriors of the Horde and Alliance in one place in order to raise them into Undeath as his elite champions that would then scour the land. And he would have succeeded had Tyrion not shattered Frostmourne at the last second. And what's even scarier is that the Lich King the players fight is one that is weakened after losing his heart and one that was fighting with what was left of his conscience, which was the SOLE THING preventing him from just ending all life on the planet Add on top of that the fact that The Lich King got exponentionally stronger with every soul Frostmourne consumed and you get why Arthas is *to this day* considered one of the most powerfull and feared villains in Warcraft history.

    @@BJGvideos yeah, but Tolkien's work is so influential that it literally became the foundation for modern fantasy. Elves, Dwarves, Orcs etc. didn't exist in the forms they traditionally do nowadays before Tolkien. Sure there were tons of myths, legends and folklore but it was all pretty scattered and somewhat inconsistent. Tolkien essentially took it all and compiled it into a cohesive "mythology" if that makes sense. And as for Sauron, he's literally inspired countless fantasy villains in some way. The Lich King is just one of the most popular examples.

    @@diplow1 More than Sauron sure, but still predated considerably by older cultures. These sorts of tales go back long before whichever variant of Satan you're referencing was conceived. But that's kinda the point, a "dark lord" isn't an especially unique concept, so the "original" in this instance would be the most highly referenced. And that would almost certainly be Sauron in today's fiction.

  • @filipvadas7602

    @@BJGvideos I'm not denying them. There's just a difference between *fantasy* and folklore/ mythology/religion One is a fictional genre, the others are a collection of stories passed on by people usually through word of mouth and only later beginning to be documented in most cases (for instance Norse mythology apparently wasn't actually written doen by thr communities that it originated from until the Romans came along) If we go by the *broadest* possible definition of a fictional "Dark Lord" . Then , yeah, obviously figures like Chernobog and Satan predate Sauron by a landslide, its not even close. But again we're talking about *fantasy literature*

  • @Caldera01

    The alias name "Annatar" is very, VERY interesting actually. In Finnish mythology, many deities and other higher spirits have the suffix "-tar" to denote their authority over something (It also happens to be the female form, but that doesn't really matter) and Annatar was supposed to be the Lord of Gifts. Well, the word "Antaa" in Finnish meant "to give", which does bend to the form "anna", or "give" in English. There are many things Tolkien took directly from Finnish mythology and I do believe this is one of them. A native would've used the name "Antajatar" instead, but that's not really neither here nor there as it's not supposed to be 1:1 Finnish anyway, but we do have multiple deities with that kind of naming scheme such as Aallotar (essentially a mermaid), Kivutar (Lit. trans. Mistress of Pain) is a spirit deity that heals pains and other ailments, but that form is also used very similarly as the English -tress suffix, such as "tarjoiliatar" , or "waitress" in English. Lastly I want to bring up "Tuonetar", literally means the "Goddess of Death", which is quite appropriate as that is also her job title as she rules over the Underworld "Tuonela", a realm of the dead in Finnish mythology.

And even if we are talking about what they have achieved, Arthas have comparatively performed much better feats during his time as the Lich King from taking on more powerful threat Ner'Zhul never faced against and just being more successful to the point even the 25 champions of Azeroth couldn't beat him. This DB was great. This made me realize how much Lord of the Rings is inspired by the German "Nibelungen Saga" and I say inspired not stolen. With the dwarf "Alberich" who stole the Rhine gold to then have a ring forged with which he can control everything... Sound familliar right? And I don't mean that cynically, I think it's great. The great stories of literature have existed for a few thousand years. To come up with something completely new is not possible. It's like music. There are only "8 tones" roughly speaking. We only continue to celebrate and change them. That's why so many songs and melodies sound similar. The famous JAWS theme, which came about by accident on the piano, is itendtic to two octaves with a melody from Disney's Bambi when the hunter comes. Where I get cynical, partially because I didn't realize it at the time: the Eragon saga stole from LOTR, and not just a few things. "Rebellious Angel" so Sauron is basically Lucifer only he didn't become a prisoner in his own realm, he took over the Earth, or Middle Earth if you want to put it that way ^^ And for the record: I think Sam is the true hero of the LOTR movies.

    Fun fact, Arthas was never technically defeated by players, instead it was actually Tyrion who, upon breaking free from the ice tomb he was imprisoned within, manages to use "The Ashbringer", a godly artifact sword created and designed specifically to smoke undead and leave nothing but ashes behind, to launch a surprise attack on the lich king who had just finished killing all the players and was in the process of turning them into undead to fuel his army. As the blade shatters the souls from within fly out, lifting the lich king off his feet with a broken blade in hand. Tyrion then uses another overpowered move to instantly resurrect all the dead players, and with arthas spinning in place, unable to defend himself, they gang up on him and manage to knock his helmet off. With the source of his power shattered and the helmet of domination removed, arthas has a moment of clarity, free from the tainted influence of the lich king, and sees the spirit of his father beside him, and utters his final words "I see only darkness, before, me..." To this day, there are still debates revolving around his cleansing/purge of the city known as "Stratholme" which was infected with the plague - Was Arthas crazy or was he the only sensible person there as all the inhabitants had already been exposed to the plague that would turn them into undead.

    Tirion did not revive the players, it was The spirit of Terenas Menethil who got freed after Frostmourne was shattered with the words: "Free at last... it is over my Son... this is the moment of Reckoning! Rise up. Champions of the Light!".

    @@TheWatschman Actually you are correct, but it feels strange to me that he even had the ability to do that. Not because the feat itself is impossible within WoW but because i don't recall ever hearing anything about Terenas having the ability to wield the light. Anyways, my original point still stand, the players actually lost against Arthas and was instead saved by the NPC's.

    One bit I honestly didn't like in this battle was that they really undersold Lich Kings durability. Rune blades before the Lich King were stuff of legends, incredible power, feeling light as a feather and radiating such power that the weapons name is synonymous with the wielder. Frostmourne however was a cut above that, having been forged by growing more powerful with every soul it consumed and shattered another legendary rune blade named Felo'melorn owned by an elven dynasty. It took the worlds greatest Paladin wielding The Ashbringer: A holy blade made for killing undead, and invoking a literal miracle to break Frostmourne. I heard people argue how Isildur's sword was a special sword forged by the elves, Narsil was a magic sword. Okay but let just name 3 legendary weapons in WoW. There's the Ashbringer reducing hordes of undead to ash with 1 swing. The Scepter of Sargeras, a magic staff that can open portals to other world. Lights Wrath, a unstable staff that would explode like a mini nuke of holy power if improperly used...and fanatics used it to suicide bomb the enemy. Warcraft weapons are just insane. To be brutally honest, I think Frostmourne would have cut through the mace and armor of Sauron with ease. But that aside, I would still say I enjoyed it because it was just an awesome fight.

    I'd like to be the first to say that I'm a huge fan of both LOTR and WOW, and have read most of the books in those works as well. So I dare say my comment will be food for thought. Objectively, the video is wrong. 1. Sauron lost his ability to morph after losing his body. 2. His armor and weapon are formed by his will with dark magic = not on the level of ancient artifacts capable of destroying Frostmourne. Even Sauron's body is created by the will and power of the ring = No blood. 3. the Lich King wasn't just a demigod like Sauron. He was the one who killed and enslaved the ancient demigods, demons and their magic. He literally had the power to kill and enslave creatures on the level of Balrogs and Great Dragons (creations of Morgoth), which even Sauron himself feared. Sauron was not afraid to go into only one type of conflict, and that was with mortals... and he was defeated by a mortal. 4 Sauron's real power has always been his strategic skills and the power of the ring to corrupt the souls of all who were in his presence. 5. Even if he didn't have the Eye of Acherus, the Lich King would have found out rather quickly during the duel what Sauron drew his power from. Bottom line, confirmed. This video is nicely done, but incredibly flawed done by people who may have had some sort of poll on Discord. The video would really make it look like there were 2 fights in reality. The first duel where the Lich King would cut off the ring of power. Sauron would have counted on that, like the good strategist he always was.He was counting on the Lich King taking the Ring and deploying it to usurp the new power, at which point he would usurp the Lich King and all his power. BUT Sauron wouldn't know that the Lich King had already experienced a battle of wills in such a powerful artifact. And that was when he, as Arthas, killed the soul of Ner'zhul (Lich King) while passing the power of the crown, which took 10 years. Thus, he would master the power of the ring and become an invincible force. P.S. There is much more power hidden in the Crown than in the Ring, which can be seen in the amount of destruction it will bring. After the Ring is destroyed, a volcano erupts and an earthquake destroys most of the army of Mordor. When the Lich King's crown is destroyed, the very fabric of reality is destroyed, breaking the barrier between the world of the living and the world of the dead. This comparison of power is legitimate, just as we can compare the size and mass of stars and the effects of their supernovae. The ring - a big supernova. The Crown - a giant supernova that went into a black hole. PS2: Here we are only talking about a 1v1 combat. In the context of armies, Sauron wouldn't stand a chance (LOTR 3 ghosts, imagine...). And even if Sauron had legions of Nazgholes, the Lich King would have no problem binding them to his will. Game, set and match - Lich King wins

    This is one of the few DB's that I didn't quite agree with. I feel like they amped up Sauron by using Shadows of War and Mordor, which aren't canon. Also they downplayed Lich King by a LOT. For one, Frostmourne is a Mournblade created by an entity equal to gods. It was only destroyed because Tirion Fordring was THE most powerful holy Paladin in existence. He was also super charged by the power of the Light at the time he struck Frostmourne. And finally, he was wielding the holy blade Ashbringer which was made with a piece of a Naaru (a being made of pure holy Light) and it was basically Frostmourne's equal but opposite. Sauron absolutely could not destroy Frostmourne because Sauron cannot use any holy (good) powers to counter it. As well, DB forgot that Lich King is absolutely capable of manipulating souls. In the Halls of Reflection dungeon we (the players) have to fight off the souls that are trapped inside of Frostmourne. LK also turned Sylvannas into a Banshee, which is just a spirit without a body. Finally, Uther (the second strongest, or probably most strongest, paladin ever) was killed by Frostmourne and STILL bore the wound to his very soul even in the afterlife. So LK can absolutely harm Sauron by using Frostmourne, it doesn't matter if Sauron is just a soul. Also, DB was wrong about the island thing. Gul'dan didn't raise the Broken Isles, he only raised the one tiny isle on the bottom right of the image that contained the Temple of Elune. The other landmass you see in the image never sank to the bottom of the ocean. Just a nitpick to point out how DB didn't really do their due diligence when researching this fight.

  • @MrSurrealKarma

    @MrSurrealKarma

    Жыл бұрын

    Soul manipulation is pretty much the biggest trait of necromancer, and the LK is the most powerful necromancer in that world. So you're right, souls are his thing.

  • @Caillron

    @Caillron

    Жыл бұрын

    @@MrSurrealKarma Yeah, DB just kept focusing on the Plague of Undeath and completely ignored Sylvannas, Uther, Banshee's, other spirits and ghosts we fight in the game, and Shadowlands. I'm pretty sure they were planning to give the victory to Sauron from the get-go because Tolkien has a larger fanbase than WoW does, and they didn't want to piss them off. That's why they gave Sauron his Shadow of War/Mordor feats as well as compared him to another of the Maiar while ignoring that each of the Valar/Maiar had their own unique quirks and just because one had the power to raise a large island doesn't mean Sauron had that same power. I'm not saying Sauron wouldn't win, just that they drastically underplayed how powerful the Lich King is and this fight was slanted in favor of Sauron from the get-go.

    I don't see Arthas losing in a straight fight. Isildur beat Sauron, and that guy was just a normal human. I imagine Arthas would still lose long term to the ring's corruption after taking it from Sauron.
