Looking Back On the Many Returns of Jafar

Фильм және анимация

In anticipation of the live action Aladdin remake, I'm looking back at all the times Jafar has come back to get even with Al. Will he ever succeed? Probably only in grimdark fanfiction, but a vizier can dream...
"How many times do I have to kill you, boy?"

Another thing that made Jafar a great villain, one of the best, is the way he imbodied his hero's flaws. Aladdin was a liar with a huge chip on his shoulder and a sense that he was meant for something better. He conned Jasmine and the Sultan to get them on his side and wouldn't set the genie free like he'd promised because it wasn't convenient to his con. If he hadn't been forced to confront his flaws in Jafar he might've ended up just like him.

I never thought of it that way. I just liked Jafar because he was a hammy villain but now thinking about it yeah, Jafar in alot of ways functions as a sort of dark mirror to Aladdin as who he could've become had he not had to confront him.

To give the Live Action movie some credit, they kinda addressed this parallel with Jafar's backstory in that version being that he too was once a street thief like Aladdin who conned his way into his high position (this was even a setup to a later scene where it was Jafar who stole the lamp from Aladdin via a simple pickpocketing.)

Concerning the "animals don't get wishes" question, apparently that was answered in, of all places, a MATH tie in game featuring a villainous genie called Bizarrah. To quote TV Tropes: She was released from her lamp due to a snake slithering over it. Due to not being human, the snake couldn't be her master, allowing her to do as she pleased. She can, however, still be trapped in her lamp. So I figure it has to do with Iago being Jafar's familiar, he's just to close to him to count.

When you brought up Jafar's evil sister, I remembered that in the original story of Aladdin the "African Magician" that Aladdin defeats has an evil brother who tries to get revenge on Aladdin. So hilariously, the trend of Disney Sequels giving their villains evil siblings is older than you would have thought!

I wish that Disney could have incorporated the notion of a genie in a gem ring, who is way less powerful (though in the fairy tale, both seem to grant unlimited number of wishes so long as you have the ring/lamp) but also much more portable and less conspicuous than the lamp genie.

9:13 - Can I just add: Jodie Benson is phenomenal as Nasira. She does a spot on imitation of Jonathan Freeman's Jafar, which helps with the idea that this is his sister. And if you keep in mind that this is the same woman who does Ariel, this voice is a big difference and I'm personally curious who came up with this casting choice. I wouldn't mind Nasira making a comeback someday, if it just leads to hearing more of Jodie's amazing voice work as that character.

Jafar is a great villain, but I think the best part of him is Iago who was brilliantly voiced by Gilbert Gottfried and made sense to bring him back for the Aladdin series and make Iago a protagonist who would be by Aladdin's side fighting against evil. Iago is more of a villain who has a good nature after his change in character while Jafar is really Evil incarnate power hungry to rule Agrahbah. The jokes themselves play well with Jafar's evil side and Iago's comedic villain side.

Jafar's one of the best disney villains not just ebcause he's a great scumbag, but he has a fantastic and memorable design and acts as a foil to Aladdin, being as they're both ambitious (In different ways) who want to be higher than their current lot in life and both utilise cunning and guile in their tactics rather than bruteforce. I'd also argue that, out of all the disney villains, Jafar's the smartest, only being defeated by being outwitted, caught up in a moment of hubris or characters oing something he doesn't expect because he's such a bastard he wouldn't think about someone risking their life. He's also the disney villain who develops a personal grudge against the hero and most often matches wits against them, which when you really think about it sn't actually that common.

Jafar's appearance in the Hercules TV show was the one I immediately thought of when I started watching this video. My biggest problem with it though, in part because I was older at the time was the merging of time frames. Aladin takes place some time after the institution of Islam as a religion while Hercules takes place in ancient Greece. But I still loved it!!!

If Disney was my company and I was making remakes of the classics I'd take all of THIS into account. Making a cameo of the evil sibling in the original movie just to establish beforehand that they exist, showing Jafar to worship Hades, Jaffar eventually becoming good and saving an elderly Aladin etcetera. Because I love lore and including all this existing lore only makes more possibilities for me to expand the lore. Jafar's sister has to have existed somewhere before her original first appearance so that's a location Aladin or maybe Hercules could go to. Actually Hercules and Little Mermaid are shown to be in the same universe so how about the grown up version of Ariel's daughter finds the kingdom of Jafar's sister and in so doing ends up with a genie of her own.

Return of Jafar is indeed a fun movie. Thank you for giving it a much better review than some other people. The other stories all sound quite interesting. I also enjoyed his appearances on House of Mouse, I thought that they used him really well especially in the Halloween film. I liked that story a lot in middle school. If I remember correctly there’s also a Jafar cameo in one episode of the Aladdin series where his face appears in a magic crystal ball in his old evil lair that Iago drags Abu into. It also includes him doing his evil laugh again which was nice, short cameo though. This series was truly amazing back in the day. Too bad it was never properly released but it’s nice that we can still watch the sequels again when we want to. That Hercules and Aladdin teamup was also really cool. My favorite part is the scene where they switch clothes and rides just to confuse the bad guys!

I played Nasira's Revenge as a kid. Can't speak for PS version, because I played PC port only. This was my first game - and introduction to Disney - in my life, and even before that - my mom used to play it like crazy even before I was born. So you can tell I am HUGELY nostalgic for this one. And I love it to no measure. While it's flawful and sometimes can be boring it you are an adult, I would recommend this one for not really experienced players or kids even. The soundtrack slaps, the aesthetics are great and there are some neat new in-universe locations to be seen. My personal fav is the Ancient City probably located somewhere in Nepal, where you fight the living dead and alive Kali statues. Or Nasira's lair is just well HELL but with TONS OF SNAKES AND COBRAS and SEMI-ANTHROPOMORPHIC COBRAS and you get to fight THE ANUBIS so yeah, will recommend

How can he even become Jafar's master, anyhow? Genies can't be the masters of other genies, can they? 4) I've heard that one of the last episodes of the "Hercules" show had Hades, Pain, and Panic (and maybe Hercules, not sure) doused with some sort of water that made them forget the events of the series. I haven't seen that episode for myself, so I dunno if there's any truth to that.

Regarding the Hercules series, the amnesiac nature of the River Styx was a plot point in a few episodes. There was one where Hercules and Meg meet as teens and then get splashed with the water and forget what happened. I don't remember the water being used on Hades as an explanation on why he's unaware the Hercules is alive, but it's as good an explanation as any.

0:45 Oh that BtS tidbit is cool! Almost like the original fairy tale where there are two genies, one in a lamp but another in a ring. The ring genie is way less powerful than the lamp genie, but also in that story, both seem to can grant unlimited wishes as long as you own the ring/lamp and are able to rub it. In fact, when Aladdin and his mom asked the lamp genie for a feast, the lamp genie told him, “Your wish is my command, master, but just so you know, the other genie in the ring could have granted that wish too.” So if you only want to wish for good food and “creature comforts” and money, you don’t even need a lamp genie. And I’ll bet that having a ring on your finger would be way less conspicuous than carrying a lamp, even in a middle eastern setting.

Edit: To be fair, regarding how the Hercules series contradicts the plot point about Hades not being aware that Hercules was still alive, that plot point never made that much sense to begin with. After all, you'd think the God of the DEAD would be the first to know that Pain and Panic succeeded in killing baby Hercules. Or, you know, that his brother Zeus would tell him about what happened to Hercules or something? It's a bit of a contrivance, so having him just know about Hercules and continuously trying to stop him works better here... in my opinion.

yeaaaaahhhh.... return of Jafar's animation sucks. it's in DESPERATE need of an upgrade. if disney won't do it, we might have to do a "reanimated collab" with youtube animators to get the job done instead. I'd gladly put up some for a crowdfunding to get it done if it was being organized!

If jaffar is contemporary with Pre-Roman Greece, I think its possible that Aladdin may take place after Alexander the Great, meaning Arabia and Persia would have some amount of hellenic influence.

Watching The return of Jafar knowing that two different studios animated one half of the movie each is distracting, seeing how stiff the characters get all of sudden. People says that it was going to be a pilot to the TV-series in multiple parts, just like most other Disney TV shows, and it shows how some parts of the movie was supposed to be different episodes, also how almost every other show have different animation styles for different episodes.

I'd so have liked to see Nasira get burned in the lake of lava, Jafar's staff get smashed, Sinbad get eaten by a frog, the Genie of the Ring get trapped in the lamp, the Vizier choose the wrong lamp and fall off the cliff, and Sa Luk turn into gold.

11:51 That’s a bit unfair, as the proper plot of The Return Of Jafar has everyone be surprised that Jafar had dug his way out of the Cave Of Wonders to begin with. It’s probably just what-if AU fanfiction.

There was this fanfic I read a long ass time ago where Hades had gathered villains together, Jafar, Yzma, Gaston, Shan Yu, Frolo, Captain Hook, Ursula, the Wicked Queen and Maleficent. He wanted them to team up to try and take out the heroes AND get revenge. Jafar was plotting to take him out while Frolo was was going all crazy religious racist to the point that when Maleficent the Queen and he try to leave he kills the Queen and while Maleficent tangles with Cerberus he bolts ending up somehow in New Orleans. Then the killing starts, gaston goes with Shan Yu but the Hun is killed by the hunter. Hook teams up with Ursula and the Captain apparently aimed his cannons at the water so that when King Triton came to help his daughter he just kept firing till he got the trident himself and he turned Ursula into a hook. He then went to Neverland and did something to make Peter and the Lost Boys keep floating higher and higher till they presumably died in space. Meanwhile Maleficent is rescued by friggin Xanatos and teams up with Dr Facilier and Mozenrath. The fic was never finished

I do have a hypothesis as to why the "Surprise villains" are so popular. Take a look at how the "Obviously Evil" people like Jafar look. Look at Maleficent and how she makes it obvious as day "I'm evil" before she even says "Me, the mistress of all evil". Or even the "Normal people" villains (ie, not magicians, faeries, or creatures) like McLeach, Madame Medusa, Cruella Deville, Prince John, Captain Hook, and Sykes. And how they are always portrayed as having some kind of hideousness to them. Wrinkles, scowls, uncanny valley makeup.... and in many ways, they give off the impression that they're "evil" right off the bat. Ie they're always scowling, talking down to people, only smiling when inflicting emotional pain or gloating... Even the normal ones like Cruella Deville and Tremaine have something to try and give a feeling of intimidation towards the viewer. Ie Cruella appearing in a storm (and you see her shadow) or Tremaine being shadowed and her eyes appear to glow. Hell, Gaston makes it obvious that he's evil the way he acts like he's entitled to Belle because "I'm Gaston, no one incels like Gaston!" you can even see this in some of their live-action movies - where the villain (if there IS one - plenty of Disney live-action movies don't have so much a "Villain" as they are an "Antagonist".) either spells out "Muahahaha I'm evil" or there are all sorts of "Don't trust this perosn, they're evil" clues outright spoonfed to you within their early scenes. Then take a look at the "Surprise" villains. When you see them right off the bat they... look, sound, and even act like "normal" characters. Ie, hero coded characters. While it makes them look like a sociopath (in Hans's case especially - he's clearly masking) it also makes one wonder if the writers, Gen X and Millennials, made them off of the types of villains THEY meet in real life. ...People who don't wear that they're "Evil" on their sleeves, people who don't ACT evil, but people who look "normal" and act nice and polite to characters. They often hide behind a veneer of cuteness or "innocence" then decide to just stab you in the back because you're no longer useful to them and if anything are now a pest that they should just get rid of. Seriously, just think for a moment - you can probably name one or two people who acted just like that. They didn't look evil. They surprised you at how much of a sociopath they were. Maybe some of them WERE a sociopath - like for example, Hans. (He's clearly masking.) Hell, you can think of Tangled and how Gothel is... an expert at gaslighting Rapunzel and tries to charm others to do her work for her. You just know Gothel is the type of person who manages to get out of trouble by fluttering their eyes and uses "Charisma", or even tries to say "I didn't do it. THEY did!" or "I only retaliated". The writers of Tangled, as well as Donna Murphy, did such a good job with Gothel some people genuinely debated whether or not Gothel DID eventually start loving Rapunzel at the end, or if she was just a very good actress with all sorts of banter like "I love you most" or making Rapunzel's favourite soup. so maybe the writer(s) are trying to warn younger millennials, Gen Z, and Gen alpha "Don't do what we did - real life villains aren't obviously evil" and "Sometimesp retty and charismatic people are just as bad". And maybe, when the guard changes, we'll end up with the "Redemption Arc" being turned around - because the Redemption Arc ignores one other danger of real life villains: Not everyone wants to or even has the capability to change. Some people will have made your life hell but grow to resent it, but others will have just laughed as they made your lives hell.
